Coders - Wondering

How did the coding program work out for those of you "aces" that got in?  I would love to get into coding..I am really getting to where I hate transcription and seriously considering heading for the door..in fact I have applications and resumes circulating and am really hoping for a change.

They lost their lead instructor soon after starting, and there have been "program glitches", "technical difficulties", etc.

Now that bankruptcy is over, I wonder if it's permanently on-hold? - nm

We are still getting our CE time 20 hours a week so no it is not officially on hold. The biggest challenge was when ICD 10 was pushed back to 2015. That blindsided everyone and changed the entire program, unfortunately. Our instructor has to come up with entirely new material. We are studying coding clinics and other materials while we wait. The hired someone to help our instructor but are getting our new equipment out to us ASAP so we can start the CAP program very soon. If they were going to shut the program down they would have done it a long time ago. They want us to fill coding positions available within the company and are doing everything in their power to make that happen.

Why don't they just hire experienced coders or newbie coders through with school? - There are plenty begging for work. NM

reliable, competent staff. This is the reason the first 60 were chosen. They did hire 20 "outsiders" but they are still going through an apprentice program before they are allowed to work on MModal accounts. Again, I think you fail to understand the full scope of coding.

I have never seen a time when they didn't have an ad posted looking for experienced coders. I think we grasp the concept fairly well.

if MM coders like MM any more than MTs like MM. No one seems to comment on that. Supposedly MM has all these coders (not the trainees), and I don't see any of them on this board commenting on what it is like to work for them. I sure hope the trainees get what they hope for out of their program. They should have contacted current MM coders before jumping into it. Like that saying, from the frying pan into the fire.

Or, maybe they saw the education and experience benefits as outweighing everything else.

You should not read anything into the fact that MM coders don't come here. I can't imagine why they would.

Just why would MM coders NOT come here? Do they think MM will track them down as they do on the Mmodal board? I'm NOT TALKING about the trainees.

Someone above posted that Mmodal is ALWAYS HIRING coders. If you are ALWAYS HIRING MTs, that is NOT a good sign. It means you are losing them as fast as you get them.

If MM is ALWAYS HIRING coders, I would like to know why. I would like to know if MM coders are treated any better than MM MTs.

Neither coding nor MT is easy. Both require highly-specialized expertise, education, and a lot of work experience to succeed.

I am glad the coding program is not on hold. I know how hard you all have to work to learn a new career and work MT. Good luck to you all. I hope you all do well. difference? The new instructor has to "come up with new material" (have to admit that has me puzzled because there is plenty of ICD-9 study material/courses, etc.) You're studying while you "wait" and also need new equipment which you're hoping will arrive ASAP.

Is they need to grow their coding business. It is not as big as their transcription and software business. Therefore, they will be training at the rate they need coders. However, I saw in their most recent management shuffle that they have a vice president position for coding so obviously it is something they put importance in.

Just visiting your board to ask a question out of ignorance. I'm an MT working for a hospital, doing straight transcription. There's been a growing trend for the hospitalists to dictate absolutely HUGE, long H&Ps/discharges ... including every stinkin' lab test and diagnostic procedure the patient has had for the last decade, it seems. I'll start off with some office supply suggestions. Code books have really thin pages,  and really teeny writing, so you will want to highlight a FEW choice items.  This has to be done *modestly* without ruining them.   Regular highlighters will bleed through.   Too much highlighting and note-writing will ruin them. They are usually trained to do only one particular type of report, not everything, and so they are not really trained as MTs. Can coding for institutions be broken down like that?  I had a friend who worked as a coder at a local hospital.  All she was given to do was outpatient ERs, and the "real" coders did all the inpatient work. I was wondering about what on a background check would prohibit one from getting a job as a coder at a hospital.  I know the obvious, but what about a misdemeanor DUI from the late 1980s on an otherwise clean-as-a-whistle record with someone who has great credit to boot?  Would that be a deal breaker?  The applicant would have the preferred credentials in place and would otherwise be a good candidate.     ...
