How long after implementation of ICD-10 will ICD-9 not be used? - Newbie

Posted: Mar 24, 2014

I know as of October 1st, facilities will be using ICD-10, and I have also noticed schools are still training in ICD-9, so my question is will both still be used in coding?  And, if so, for how long?  Isn't it supposed to be strictly ICD-10 after October 1?  How much harder is ICD-10 than ICD-9?

Thank you for your time in responding.

You will need ICD-9 (oops!) to code anything that occurred prior to Oct 1, regardless of when you are coding it.

You might run into it in other circumstances, too. For instance, things coded 5 years or 5 months ago will stay the same -- they won't convert. After the switch, you will need ICD-9 to deal with that data.

ICD-10-CM isn't harder. It is very much the same. ICD-10-PCS is quite different, but I can't say it is "harder." More interesting, maybe.

That makes sense! Thank you, Coder! - Newbie

Thank you so much for your answer! I truly appreciate it. :-)

Coder is wrong - again

You will need ICD-9 to code anything that occurred before October 1st. I do not think you will have much trouble with PCS, learning it for the first time. I find it harder, but just because I am used to ICD-9 PCS. You will do fine; don't psych yourself out. :)
OK, calm down! Nothing to get excited about! - Coder

Thanks for pointing it out! I type ICD-9 and ICD-10 about 50 times a day and mix them up about half the time.

I make other mistakes, too. ;)

Using ICD-10 prior to Oct 1 - coder trainee

In the MModal coder training program, we will not be taught ICD-9. However, there is the possibility of completing the CAP in less than the 12 weeks allowed. If any of us manage to do that, we would be starting as "actual coders" prior to Oct 1. I wonder how that will work since we won't have ICD-9 training.

Something That I Have Been Wondering About - Especially With The Implementation Of VR
Jul 19, 2013

Something that I have been wondering about and thinking about others in this profession.  I was born wtih cerebral palsy.  While I am able to walk, although with a prounced limp, this conditiion affects the whole side of my body.  I have always been able to "type," however, with the implementation of VR, and companies such as Nuance, MModal and other companies wanting MTs to keep their hands on the keyboard and not use the mouse as much as possible, I am really running into "probl ...

EPIC Implementation And Voice Recognition
Dec 25, 2011

I desperately need info if anyone can please help. I am pretty sure I will be losing my job of 10 years in a couple of months. The hospitals I have been working for are going to what is called EPIC implementation. Also, the physicians will be transitioning to voice recognition software. I have been searching, and as far as I can understand, the EPIC is in regards to a paperless medical record. I am wondering if the voice recognition is part of that agenda. Does anyone have any further info on th ...

Should I Wait To Go To Coding School For Implementation Of ICD-10?
Dec 28, 2011

Am a current Mt looking to get into coding, specifically looking at Andrews.  I am not familiar with coding at all, so this may be a dumb question to those familiar with it - but here goes! Would it make more sense to wait until the implementation of ICD-10 to invest in the courses or is this a mute point pretty much?  In other words, would it be easier to "transition" from 9 to 10 or start fresh with 10?  Hope this makes sense and TIA for any input.   ...

Why Does It Take So Long?
Mar 08, 2011

Anyone out there notice this?  That it takes twice as long to do an op note anymore in ASR what with all the cutting, pasting, standards, going back to check whether or not to delete headings, blah, blah.  It used to be a cinch to simply bring in one of my standards and make the appropriate changes according to the audio, but now with ASR, it takes twice as long.  I feel like I'm running in place and going nowhere just to make ASR learn something.  It's such a waste ...

How Long Does It Take To Not Be Known As An MT
Jan 24, 2013

I have known where this 'profession' was headed for years; even in the late 1990s I knew. I earned the education that I need with both an associate degree and bachelor's degree (bachelor's degree from Big 10 university) and, still, many people view me as an MT, which we can all agree is not good. I have experience in my new line of work, and I have worked in that field in the past. How long is it really going to take before people do not view me with all the negative stereoty ...

Mar 23, 2015

I quit today. No 2 weeks notice. No anything. "You won't ever be able to work for Nuance again if you do this." How Long Does It Take You??....600 Lines...sm
Apr 12, 2010

How long does it take you to type 600 lines?  I am considering taking an at-home position in addition to my in-house transcription position.  The minimum line count for this company is 1800 lines a week and I'd like to not have to work more than three days a week for them, which would be 600 lines per day.  I believe I'd be typing straight into Word, so the only quick-text I'd be using is the Microscoft AutoCorrect.  I would be transcribing clinic notes wi ...
