Does every doctor office have coders? - anon

Posted: Aug 04, 2011

Just curious.  And if so, do coders work as the primary billilng person as well or do they having a billing person and a coder.  I don't see too many jobs advertised for coders so I was wondering... maybe not all have them.

No, not exactly - Coder

Where are you looking that you don't see too many jobs advertised for coders? The newspaper? That's not somewhere I would look.

I'm a coder and I see jobs all the time. They are always some on www.usajobs.com. You'll see them on the websites of professional organizations, hospitals and other healthcare organizations, and professional journals. A lot are handled by headhunters. I see a lot of those through emails from local AAPC and AHIMA chapters.

A small, non-specialty office might not need a full-time coder. It kind of depends on what they do in that office. The bigger they are and the more complex the services, the more likely they are to have a coder. Otherwise, they might just use a biller or some other kind of front-office person. Even then, they probably work with a consultant coder who sets them up with the codes they need, provides training and advice, and does periodic audits of coding/billing accuracy.

You may have the idea that coding is just typing numbers onto bills, but it's a lot more than that. I have never done anything even remotely like that and do not know any coders who have. If you are looking for a job typing numbers onto bills, that's a billing job or a "front office" job.

I am currently enrolled in a coding course. I am wanting to sit at a desk all day coding medical reports. That is my dream job. I do not want to be involved with the "billing" aspect of it all. I do not want to just punch in codes that are already handed to me either. I want to use my newly gained skills to their highest degree. I do see coding jobs when I look elsewhere besides the local newspaper. Its just that I have been on a few interviews for other positions and I mention that I am taking a medical coding course and they don't really comment. Then they show me around, introduce me to the people, including the billing person. I do not see an employee or a room where it looks like coding is being done. That is why I ask.

I love orthoedics and I would love to find an orthopedic practice in which I can primarily just code FT.

what you seek is unrealistic.

It doesn't mean that you are looking for and what you will find is not to your liking. What I am saying is that you may need to adjust your perspective. Unless you move into something more than coding, you may be disappointed.

If you want to sit at a desk coding all day (and is this what you truly desire?), you should perhaps consider inpatient coding. Many, many physician offices want people who multitask.

From the application perspective, I do not understand how you can not be involved in the "billig" aspect (your words). Coding IS billing.

Good for your for not wanting to just punch in billing that is handed to me. That is data entry, not coding.

If you are looking for a "room where it looks like coding is being done," well, good luck to you, as you will most likely never realize that potential. My experience is that even those who audit coding fail to realize this particular dream.

I am not discouraging you from coding. I am asking you to challenge your perception to conform to a realistic job environment so that you CAN attain your desire to "use newly gained skills to their highest level."

You may need to flex some to do that. Best of luck to you.

Many smaller doctors' offices just simply give the billers a list of codes to use, often they are out of date, they do not provide them with current reference material... it makes one wonder how they ever get paid? I learned this by interfacing with the physician offices when I was working as an inpatient coder, which really is a fun job!

? About Working For A Private Doctor's Office
Apr 15, 2012

I saw an opening for a medical transcriptionist for a private doctor's office in my town.  I wonder, if any of you work in a private office--won't all medical practices be going to some sort of EMR in the coming year?  This ad didn't say anything at all about EMR, but I'm kind of assuming that they'll be switching to it if they haven't already.   I've only done MT in an acute-care hospital setting, so I also wonder if a lot of smaller doctor ...

Should I Stay Or Should I Go? I Took A Job At A Local Doctor's Office As
Jun 16, 2012

a scheduler/receptionist.  I took the job because I wasn't making anything typing at home and I thought it would be nice to get out of the house and sharpen some different skills apart from just transcribing.  Plus the office is 5 minutes from my house, days with weekends off, and it's a steady paycheck that does not fluctuate because there's no jobs available or I'm having an off dat, but I hate the job!  On my third day, the lady who was training me had ...

Anybody Handle Phones In A Doctor's Office?
Jul 29, 2012

So I just got a temp job in a fancy upscale surgical hospital. First in-house job in 8 years, and I really need to convert this job into a permanent deal, but my first attempts on the phone last week I sort of bombed. Is anybody able to offer some pointers on phone tact? I know I will make mistakes, it would be great if I could recover from them gracefully. >_<*  If someone was willing to mentor me and get me through this next week I would send you a box of cookies or brownies or wha ...

Transcription Software So That Doctor Can Dictate Into A Digital Recorder From His Office
Apr 20, 2010

Does anybody know of a good software program or system where the doctor can dictate into a digital recorder from his office, upload it to my computer and that I could transcribe using a footpedal (that I already have) and then upload it and send it back to the doctor?  The doctor would like to start using a digital system ASAP, so any information would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you! ...

Need To Convert From Office 2013 To Office 2010
Apr 26, 2014

I'm starting with a new company next week.  My Windows 7 PC has Office 2013 Professional.  The new company's platform is only compatible with 2010 or earlier.  I don't have the money to spend on 2010, so I'll either have to decline the offer or try to find a way to install 2010 cheaply.  I thought I might be able to download a version for free, since it's not the newest version, but it doesn't look like I can do that.  Any ideas? ...

Overheard A Doctor Telling Another Doctor...
Oct 15, 2010

20 years ago when the DRG's hit the hospitals, one  was complaing to the other... "they treat doctors like a bunch of old dogs now".  Well, that's how  MTs are being treated now.  Why on God's green earth do the MT services require all MT's to work at least one weekend day every week (Friday's and Monday's  don't count). Every ad I see on the Job Seeker board requires weekends.  Are they sadistic or something.  Why do we put u ...

The Best Coders
Jan 31, 2010

I would love to get the point of view of others on this topic. I've been watching coders for years, our graduates and others. I've found from my own experience that the best coders are people who enjoy more structure than one might find in medical transcription, for example. People who enjoy accounting, bankers, medical office managers, many nurses, and sometimes burned-out MTs. If you have 10 medical transcriptionists transcribe a report, you may have that many different versions, ea ...

What I Want To Know For All You New Coders,

Salary For Coders
Feb 02, 2010

Some Questions For Those Who Are Already Coders:
Aug 31, 2010

I spent the better part of today looking at jobs other than MT.  Although very few hospitals had openings for MTs (they probably don't even have an MT Dept. anymore), there were coder jobs at almost every facility.  None of the ads I looked at gave a wage.  What does an experienced (5+ years) coder usually make?  Are you paid on production, or by the hour?  Is coding done on a computer?  What sort of software is used, and in your own experience, is it better t ...

How Are Coders Paid?

Question For Coders ...
Dec 15, 2011

Just visiting your board to ask a question out of ignorance. I'm an MT working for a hospital, doing straight transcription. There's been a growing trend for the hospitalists to dictate absolutely HUGE, long H&Ps/discharges ... including every stinkin' lab test and diagnostic procedure the patient has had for the last decade, it seems. Most of the reports are walls o' text, as these docs go on and on and bleepin' ON for at least four to five pages of transcribed dic ...

Question For MTs-to-Coders
Jan 17, 2012

Hi all you MTs-to-Coders!  I am curious to know why you left MT for coding? Burnout? Better suited to your personality? Better pay? Also, in conjuction to that, what kind of MT eduction did you have? Learn on the job? School? I ask because I'm trying to decide whether to go into MT or coding--I'm leaning toward MT through Andrews right now (for numerous reasons), but am looking for a perspective from the other end of the tunnel, so to speak. Thanks! ...

Question For Coders...
May 20, 2013

I'm currently an MT for many years, in the process of enrolling to take a coding program at a community college (waitlisted at the moment).  I've done much research before making this decision, but have never spoken to someone who actually works in coding.  I have some general questions regarding what you think of the profession -- do you like your job? If so, what is it that you like? Do you find it at all monotonous or is there some variety in what you do? I wonder if it ma ...
