salary for coders - MTangel

Posted: Feb 02, 2010

What is the average hourly pay for coders?  How would you say the income compares with medical transcription.  I have been a medical transcriptionist for 14+ years, and looking into coding.  I actually used to do some light coding and billing years ago, but it was for a OB/GYN practice back in the day.

Depends on your geographic area, I believe - Biller/coder/MT

I live out in the West and it varies, depending upon years of experience, specialty practice etc. You will make more for working a specialist though. The average around here is $15-20 but the $20 an hour comes with a lot of experience.

thank you, another question (sm) - MTangel

Do you know about the average of what the remote companies pay? I get paid by the line for MT. How do they govern how much you do per hour remotely and how do they determine pay?

Thanks!

remote pay for MTs - MT/coder

The definition of a line can vary by company, but the standard is 65 characters equals a line. Some count spaces, some do not. Some count bolding (turning it off and on) as a character, some do not. The new method being promoted is to count only black characters to create 65 equals a line. Pay is determined by a lot of factors, but the range for at-home MT can be anywhere from 5 to 11 cents per line for straight transcription, and 2 to 6 CPL for voice recognition editing.
I think that you misunderstood me (sm) - MTangel

I have been a remote MT for 14+ years. I get paid by the line as an MT. I was asking how do they pay coders and how is it calculated, and if it is by the hour, how do they determine how many hours you are working or is there a set amount of work you are expected to do in a given period of time. :-)

I'm the original person who posted a reply. The other was from another coder. I'm sorry though that I cannot answer you on the remote coding. This is something new to me. I have always worked for physician offices and hospitals doing coding and have only done MT-ing at home. I have heard there are more becoming opportunities to do coding at home but I think it is pretty hard to get into, at least for the time being. I put an hourly pay because that is what you make when you go into the office to work say from 9-5. I have heard someone mention that they were paid by the chart/report that they coded out when they did it remotely. I'm just not sure how much that would be. I have done billing from home and I charged the doctors per HFCA-1500 that I billed out so remote coding is probably similar.
Thanks :-) nm - MTangel

One of our graduates got a remote coding job right after graduating. She had just passed the CCS exam and her employer did ask her to work on-site for a couple of months before going home to work. That's a great situation for both the employer and the coder, in my opinion, because the employer can use that office space for something that brings in money. It's great for the coder because coders can just sit down and start work, not having to worry about bad weather, flu exposure, gas prices, car maintenance, or even work clothes, as if anyone really dresses up for work these days anyway. There are more of those positions opening up, but certainly not as many as you find in medical transcription.

Informatics Salary Versus Coder Salary
Jan 15, 2013

Hello Everybody.  First, let me say I have gotten a lot of good advice from this board in the past few years.  I have been encouraged to go back to school, am currently enrolled in Andrews for coding, and am looking to the future to obtain a degree to further advance myself in the field. I am very strongly considering WGU's Informatics course. I think this will be a good fit for me, especially considering this program also includes many IT certifications and I have always been ...

Nuance CEO Salary

I found this very interesting in regard to a study done that shows the American worker has no idea the disparity between his salary and his CEO's salary.  This is from the The Boston Globe on 04/28/2014:What does it take to become the most overpaid executive in Massachusetts? Or, more to the point, how much does it take? The answer is a little bit north of $29 million. That’s how much the Burlington speech recognition company Nuance Communications Inc. paid its chief executive, Paul ...

Scribes - Starting Salary
Mar 30, 2010

I do medical transcription for a local specialty practice.  They are transitioning to EHR and gave notice to their MTs that they would be cutting back on their MT needs starting next week.  Today, the office mgr. called and asked if I would be interested in a Scribe position.  In short, I am.  The manager would like to learn my salary requirements.  I am thinking of asking to start at $10/hour.  Does that seem reasonable.  N.B. Salary At Early 1990s Level
Jul 18, 2010

I have been with my current company for a number of years, but due to a number of changes that have been instituted in just the last few years, I have realized about a 37% reduction in income, at the same time that I am considered "one of their best," and am back to my income level of the early 1990s.  I see foreclosure looming.  That VR/SR has become the majority of the work is the largest factor in this drop.  Are there MTs who are working for companies with little or no VR ...

Salary/wage Expectations - Your Thoughts
