self-employed means no unemployment. Please help - buried

Posted: Jan 29, 2010

I have been a self employed transcriptionist for 10 years, with great accounts that I have been lucky to have.  Today I have been told that my job may be in jeopardy.

Now for months I Have sent off my resume to companies ... and NEVER hear back from them.

now i have applied for outside the industry jobs... and of course nothing, and because fo the economy they only want top candidates for anything.

The reality is this... If they say we aren't using you anymore, my income is gone in an instant, and i do not qualify for unemployment.  I am scared out of my mind... first of all I am a single female meaning i am the only income.

I am not the kind of person to just sit around and hope a job comes... i have been extremely proactive, and to my dismay, have not benefited at all.  The one job I spent 5 months getting (traveling 5 times, taking 3 tests, 3 interviews... the hirign process is now ON HOLD... that was devastating)... I am not here to gain pity from anyone, i am trying to help myself.  i dont even think id qualify for welfare and i would be ashamed for that anyway.

Anyways i have been coming here long enough to understand people dont give up their company secrets, but does anyone have any tips on getting a job?  anything that might possibly help me in this economic disaster?

Thanks

if you have to get unemployment/whatever... - cc

...so be it. It doesn't sound like you did anything wrong. That said, I know I can't think of anything too helpful to add except to keep looking. I'm told that most of the jobs out there aren't actually advertised at all; they're just mentioned within companies, so ask all your friends if they have friends who know ANYBODY who's hiring. Get somebody at the local employment commission to look at your resume and see if they could spruce it up a bit. If you need just a class or two to finish a degree, that investment might be worth it. Also, I found that for me, independent contractor doesn't work simply because I need health insurance. If you're sticking within the transcription biz, make sure you do your research about companies before you jump through hoops for 'em. Also you might want to think about temping but specifying up front that you are looking for temp TO HIRE. I did that once and got a really plum job (though idiot management decisions closed the place down later, but that's another story).

Those are just my first thoughts....Now I'll sit back and wait to get bashed by the professional snarkers. Best of luck to you and hang in there--they say things are slowly starting to pick up.

Independent contractor/health insurance? - MDI/MT

I always had to pay for my own health insurance as an independent contractor, because no one I know of pays health insurance for an IC. MDI didn't pay for any insurance and I was an IC for them.

Keep applying and keep patient - stillmting

With so many people applying for every position advertised, it's taking a lot longer to hear back from the companies, but keep trying. In the early 90s, I learned the "self employed don't qualify for unemployment" lesson (even though I was an employee of my own company and drawing a salary and paying into UE.)

These are scary times and it sounds like you're doing the best you can to cover yourself. Good luck.

Stay Employed At TTS
Jun 15, 2011

So, from what I understand, to stay employed at TTS, you basically have to just work and agree with mgmt at all times?  Never question them on anything?  Is that the only thing they are concerned about??!!  No one has ever mentioned how they feel about production met or not, etc.  Not that meeting production would be a problem for me, but if they don't care about that, it makes me wonder what kind of company they are running if all they care about is being right and not being questioned ...

Question For Employed Newbies
Jun 30, 2010

Hi everyone, I am just wondering about when you first started that first job. How long were you in 100% QA? How long does it take before they let you do what you do without watching every file you hand in? At what point do they trust a newbie to be on there own? I know that it is different for everyone, but I am just looking for a ballpark figure here. Thanks in advance. ...

Self-employed Health Insurance Deduction
Mar 02, 2014

My husband's employer offers health insurance benefits to spouses but doesn't pay any part of it.  I  was wondering if any of you ICs in the same situation still claim the self-employment health insurance deduction?  There doesn't seem to be a set definition of subsidized for this purpose.  Some claim that the spouse still gets a negotiated reduced rate to pay and the premiums are pre-tax, so it is subsidized.  Unfortunately, it would still cost over ...

HAPPILY EMPLOYED AT NUANCE FOR 5 YEARS
Jul 16, 2014

For the record, I have been happily employed by Nuance for 5 years and I still love it.  I do both editing and straight transcription and I average $16.00 to $18.00 an hour easily and I maintain better than 99% accuracy.  They do pay for spaces (some companies don't, and that makes a big difference in total line count) and they pay ON TIME, EVERY TIME.  Their line rate is comparable or better than where I've worked in the past.  I have worked for companies before an ...

Anyone Employed By Terra Nova Transcription Out Of Canada?
Mar 07, 2013

Is anybody else on MT Stars employed by Terra Nova transcription out of Canada?  I have worked for  them for a little over a year and am wondering what others are thinking about the drastic changes taking place.  Maybe it is just my account, I don;t know, but am interested in what others may be seeing and thinking.  It just comes out of the blue with no discussion or information at all. ...

If You Find Yourself Employed At Nuance Through No Fault Of Your Own, With No Other Choice
Mar 13, 2014

Claim bankruptcy right away because soon you won’t be able to afford debt, and then you won’t be able to afford to file bankruptcy either, and you could lose much more than your self-esteem. You will probably eventually lose that. Buy a cappuccino maker because you won’t be able to buy fancy coffee anymore. You will know exactly what is in it too.  Keep the basics stocked: rice, beans, taters, nuts, fruit, eggs, flour, sugar, etc, because your food budget will be ...

Does Anyone Know What This Means?

I saw this at the end of the ad on the job board for Escription, and don't understand it:   ** IF YOU’VE EVER BEEN RELEASED/LET GO FROM AN ESCRIPTION ACCOUNT FOR QUALITY ISSUES IN THE PAST, YOU WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE TO WORK ON THESE ACCOUNTS, AS I WILL BE UNABLE TO PROVIDE YOU WITH AN ESCRIPTION ID. ** Does it mean that if you get taken off an Escription account at another job, you get banned from the system for good?  What's up with that? ...

Jun 27, 2015

No doubt you’ve read marketing articles written by Nuance extolling the benefits its voice recognition software for medical professionals. That’s to be expected — they’re trying to sell a product. A very expensive, time-consuming, imperfect product that is not for everyone, no matter how hard they try to convince potential buyers otherwise.  But they are very good at making it seem like it’s the best thing since sliced bread.  Because the buyers believe th ...

More Insurance Coverage Means
Jul 23, 2010

Sorry if this topic has been covered before, but I haven't been able to find a thread about it. If the health care reform means more Americans will be insured, then more Americans will be using doctor and hospital services, and there will be that much more transcription to do. Do you think this is right? Shouldn't there be a much bigger volume of transcription to be done, starting in a few years? ...

So Reshuffling Of Accounts Means Nothing
Oct 19, 2012

Apparently I am still in the half of the North that has no work.  After seeing the list of accounts we supposedly have in our new BOB I had a glimmer of hope, until we got the update today that stated that most of these accounts offshore anyway.  So more accounts but not really any more work and more MTs fighting over a minimal amount of work.  Plus incentive this weekend so now it is a double whammy of no work.  Looks like I will be taking the day off ear ...

Nontoxic Means What In Physical Exam?

Min Wage Means More Minimum Lines Per Day
Jan 28, 2015

So, I probably missed this in another post but just got an e-mail from our admin ass't saying I didn't make the minimum lines for the past pay period so will be getting paid minimum wage.  Had not realized my state raised their minimum wage for 2015 (my fault for not reading that somewhere) but that just means I now have to up my minimum lines by 20.  Cripe, 2000 per day was bad enough.  There are only so many hours in the day people.  Plus, I got "scolded" for havi ...
