Obama Administration to Announce  $975 Million in Health Grants

Feb. 12 (Bloomberg) -- The Obama administration today will announce $975 million in government grants to expand the use of technology in the health-care industry and train medical professionals to use new systems.

The spending, part of the $862 billion economic stimulus legislation passed a year ago, will expand technology use at more than 100,000 hospitals, according to an administration official speaking on the condition of anonymity before the announcement.

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius will announce more than $750 million in awards to states and health-care providers to help them adopt new technology to share information, and Labor Secretary Hilda Solis will announce $225 million to train 15,000 for health-care careers.

Educating people how to use EMR is a WONDERFUL idea and should be done, hell, should have been done years ago.

It would also be good if people were trained on what EMR *IS* :)

I know what EMR is, and training DOCTORS on it will make MTs obsolete! - duh!

Not necessarily - EMR Here

[ In Reply To ..]
I work on an account that has used EMR for years and the docs still dictate a narrative. EMR is changing the industry, no doubt about it, but there will always be doctors and/or practices who recognize that it is more cost effective to have someone other than the doctor produce the medical record.

I also continue to believe that there will always be some physicians/hospitals/clinics out there that like their medical record to be free of spelling errors, abbreviations, etc., such as you get with the point and click EMR systems.
the need for MTs will be reduced significantly, 2 out of 10 - nmsg

True. The best MTs are going to take all the jobs - I see that happening already
[ In Reply To ..]
The best MTs, and not always the ones who have been doing it the wrong way the longest, are already getting the work and the others are being starved out. That's why it's so important to keep your skills updated. If you never had good skills, this is the time to learn them or find something else to do. I know dozens of MTs who either don't have the skills or just have lousy attitudes. They are definitely at risk for not being employable, but they probably won't do well in any other job either. I also know some MTs who are drowning in work right now when others are complaining that they have no work. My conclusion is that at least some of the time the problem is with the skills and disposition of the MT and some of the time it's with a lousy employer. The key for each of us is to know the difference. If you are getting plenty of work, there isn't a question, at least right now. If your work has dried up, you need to be honest with yourself. Is it happening to all MTs of your employer, or are they just culling out the ones with the least skills or the worst personalities. You know, the ones who say, "I've done it this way for years. It was good enough for my last employer so it's good enough for you" or "I'm too old to learn (whatever) so I'm not going to do it."
EXCELLENT! - MissyMT

This is so accurate. I read posts daily on here from a particular MT who does little more than whine and blame her company, when I know the company is actually quite busy. I work for 2 companies, one of which is here often as not having work, and I'm busy every single day.

It's the "half-assed" MT that helped dig the hole we're now in, and frankly, I'll be more than happy to say buh-bye to those with poor attitudes and ethics.
Not only that but (see message) - I know for a fact
[ In Reply To ..]
There are some reports that require long narratives, and it would take hours for the doctors to type them, even with errors. Think about neurology or neurosurgery reports. Those can be very long. The doctors are going to demand that all that information be documented and they are not going to do it themselves and tire out their hands, which they need for surgery.

The job description is going to change. MTs whose skills are not up to par will be forced to take really low wages or find themselves being let go. (I'm not saying this applies to you, just talking generally.)

There will be a true position of Medical Language SPECIALIST because that person will be able to do any kind of transcription and do it accurately, use any kind of program with little time needed for acclimation, and will be able to be an asset to those doctors using EMR.
Excellent Message! I have more to add to what you said - MLS

If you go to MT message boards, you always see one or two people going on about how awful things are and how everyone and everything is out to get them. Give me a break! You are in charge of your own skills. Either bother to get them, update them, or find something that does motivate you to be a skilled worker.

I'm thinking of a person on another message board. She carries on as if she must be obsessed about how she has been physically forced to become a medical transcriptionist. She takes no responsibility for herself, but she sure can whine, whine, whine. Obviously she gets something from sharing her misery.

That's getting old, folks. Nobody is forcing any of us into any kind of work. We make our choices according to what is best for our own situation. If it doesn't work at this particular time in our life, find something that does.

If you are going to stay in the MT industry, learn what you need to learn, develop a teachable attitude, and get in with it.

If you know medical transcription isn't the right career for you or if you aren't motivated to do it right, get on with it. Leave it for those who are getting what they want and need from doing this work.

Most of us know that this work is not perfect. No job is perfect. We do our best to make it work so we can pay our bills. Period.

I Was Just Over At Several Forums For Nurses And They Are Having Trouble Getting Jobs
Oct 30, 2011

One new nurse was told that her skills are stale and she needs to go through a "refresher" course, which costs $2,000 before she will be able to get a job. Another one has been looking for work for 6 months with no luck. I went over there to see if people in other kinds of work eat their young as MTs sometimes do. I thought maybe everyone else was happy and enjoying successful careers. Apparently not. These are tough times. I think sometimes we generalize so much that we depress each other. N ...

Why Do You Suppose Dictators Just Continuously Mumble?
Aug 24, 2013

One of the doctors on my VR account, just mumbles his ENTIRE report every single time.  I mean, why would he do this when he KNOWS someone is having to transcribe it?  Perhaps he doesn't understand the concept of VR and doesn't realize that I receive this report full of complete nonsense, but even if he didn't, if you are SPEAKING and KNOWING that you expect a report out of this, why would you mumble the entire report?  It feels to me like a lack of disrespect, but ...

No doubt you’ve read marketing articles written by Nuance extolling the benefits its voice recognition software for medical professionals. That’s to be expected — they’re trying to sell a product. A very expensive, time-consuming, imperfect product that is not for everyone, no matter how hard they try to convince potential buyers otherwise.  But they are very good at making it seem like it’s the best thing since sliced bread.  Because the buyers believe th ...

More Insurance Coverage Means
