Company Happiness Anyone?? - MissingMT

Posted: Mar 17, 2012

Is there anyone out there right now who is happy with their MTSO? I am a former transcriptionist and finding that I really miss it and want to get back into it. I have a previous 9-year history as an MT, but was having low and inconsistent workflow when I decided to leave. Is there anyone out there who can give positive references to their employer and willing to share?

I would recommend that you stay with that. MT wages are at an all-time low, and I wouldn't recommend this field to anyone anymore. Unfortunately, this is all I have done for 30+ years and I am kind of "stuck." Good luck to you.

Thanks for the reply. I know the MT field has really taken a nose dive. I think it stinks! The knowledge we know and gain in this profession is amazing and yet MTs are so under paid. Currently working as an occupational therapy assistant but caseload is very low and has been for about 4 months now. Therefore, I am driving 1 hour to see 3 patients and then an hour home. This position also unfortunately is "production driven" and when there is no patients to see, they don't pay us to be there. With gas prices and my hourly wage, it's not paying for me to do this either. And of course, there are no jobs available within an hour of my home for this profession either. Seems to be a field where when someone gets into a position, they stay until they retire. This economy/job situation really stinks!! Thanks again!!

Pick up a part-time MT job, one you can do in evenings - when not seeing patients.

just a thought and of course there is always weekend work available. You gotta do what you gotta do to make ends meet.

have you thought about combining your skills... - tmt

Sell your MT experience AND your OT assistant experience to physicians/surgeons offices. Start by searching for medical office assistant positions. Some of your skills and the skills of a medical office assistant, I'm sure, are the same. It's worth a shot.

Also consider adult education organizations that teach life skills. You might be able to transition into another career that way.

Also consider prisons.

Also consider large manufacturing companies (as support for the staff RN when employees come back after an injury).

Also consider over-the-road (long haul) trucking companies.

Also consider hospitals.

You'll have to do some searching and write a fantastic (but short and to the point) cover letter, but it is possible.

It won't happen overnight, and if the job doesn't feel right (and you're not desperate for a job at that time), keep looking.

Good luck!

If you're an OTA, I'd keep looking for jobs in that field. My friend went back to school two years ago for OTA and she's making nearly $60k working in a nursing home. She works hard and has to rotate weekends but she loves it. Lucky for her, she lives about 5 blocks from where she works. Here on the east coast, there are tons of ads for OTA that pay really well.

Wow...if relocating were an option for me, I'd look at the east coast. I am currently working in a nursing home but don't make nearly that; although I am in the midwest and we are apparently saturated with OTAs at this point. There are a two technical colleges that offer the program, so I'm sure with all the new graduates there are more than enough OTAs to go around also. I have three children, one in junior high, otherwise I would look into relocating. Thanks for the info!

I'm sorry for being negative. I hope you find something. sm - Just my opinion

I work for OTI and am happy there, although the pay is less than whhat I would like, and I am sure there are a lot of MTSOs would want you for evenings or weekends, when you are not doing the OTA job. I have been an MT for 35+ yaers and had hoped to just keep on working as long as I can, maybe 20 more years, but I have serious doubts as to the future of MT, so things look a bit gloomy for me. I am glad you have other options. :-)

Good luck!
Wow ... I should have proofread ... sorry! nm - Just my opinion

Ditto. MT is an awful business to be in these days. No chance for a raise....ever. No respect from employers. I, too, am stuck. The ONLY advantage I see anymore is working at home.

Im happy, but I work for M*Modal. Most dont seem to - like them, but I have no problems.

[ In Reply To ..]
I have reasonable line rates, especially for VR. With my years of experience its nice to know that I'll be paid for it and not stuck with the usual 4cpl for editing.

But thats my experience. Also, I have plenty of work all the time, have yet to run out. And I am one of the fortunate ones who gets 95% of my work from my 3 primary acccounts. Only when they are low do I get work from the other accounts on my team.

I like it at M*Modal too and I am not a suit - MT2

[ In Reply To ..]
I like it because I have tried many smaller companies and M*Modal is so big and now are also working with the state unemployment job line to offer jobs, so it seems they are not as prone to personal bullying. They are very concerned at least in my experience to not go over the boundaries of personal bullying and stick to corporate rules. I am tier 3 and I do have the higher pay, however, I must work and not fool around doing anything else while clocked in. But then again, wouldn't that be with any "real" job in the outside world... that is what I believe. I stick with my nose to the grindstone, knowing that this job requires production and I get my lines and paid a decent wage. Not like in the 80s, but this business does not pay like that any more anyway. Suffice it to say, I feel protected from the cheating that went on and personal bullying by companies which I worked for in the past. Here, it isn't easy, but it is straightforward. I also work in a region where running out of work is not a problem.

I hear ya on the bullying - see msg

[ In Reply To ..]
when you say "I feel protected from the cheating that went on and personal bullying by companies" I 100% agree.

I tried a couple other companies before M*Modal, one a smaller company and the other another national and it did'nt work out. The management at the smaller company was very rude and sent nasty emails and I cannot work under that type of stress.

The other national, I did not like their practices and even though it was bigger, there was a lot of wrong doings going on and couldn't tolerate their working conditions either.

Many complain about M*Modal, but from what I can tell a lot of the others are no better. I worked at a hospital for almost 10 years and there was bullying going on there, everyone had to watch their backs and it was tons of nit-picking.

At M*Modal I am left alone to do my work and I have plenty. The only emails I get from my CCM are group ones showing job statistics or asking for overtime and every email says "Thanks for all you do".

QA coach only sends reminder emails. I love it. I punch on, do my job, and thats the end of it. No stressing out and looking over my shoulder wondering if whether I will have a job or not tomorrow.
I agree. I was tired of never knowing... - MT4

They might not be the best (M*Modal) at making us feel appreciated, but does any other smaller company out there, or Nuance... if they are all along the same lines, at least this giant even with its corporate line is not going to keep us wondering when the other shoe will drop. I worked at other companies where I never knew what my check was going to be (here, I can get my line count all the time, and know my hours from the time sheet I approve), I never knew who was going to be really nasty in the e mail stating "The next infraction you will be terminated." (M*Modal is corporate and has policies against bullying in any form), and when I log on my stomach isn't in my mouth from all the "what if's." I know what I am going to get paid, if I work more I'll get paid more, and the acct specs are always on F5 every report, so if they are different I know it's all there for me. I just don't see anywhere else that equals this type of safety. Off my soap box now.
"Next infraction you will be terminated". Boy am I - ever tired of seeing that in my email!
[ In Reply To ..]
I work at a medium sized company where the bullying never stops. It seems like it's impossible to ever do anything right, my job is always in jeopardy. It makes me a nervous wreck, and my performance starts to suffer, not to mention the rest of my life!

Looking For A Company With No ASR And All USA
Nov 18, 2009

I have over 30 years in this field and it seems that a lot of companies are either cutting the MT's pay to edit on ASR and/or are offshoring work out to India, Pakistan, Philippines, etc.  I don't believe in sending our jobs overseas, and I've also given ASR at whirl (a long whirl lol) and I still couldn't increase my lines per hour to compensate for the cut in pay that I had to take by doing ASR.  So what I'm looking for is a company that does not do ASR, do ...
