First of all, you will not - be able to

"make your own hours," certainly not when you first start out and possibly never.

There is not a growing demand for MTs. The demand is shrinking with much of the work going to EHR systems that use voice recognition, templates, point-and-click formats, and the like, and the shrinking number of straight-typing jobs are going to lower-wage countries like India, Pakistan, the Philippines, even Jamaica.

The experienced MTs who had the jobs that are going away are competing for the shrinking number of jobs still available. That will be your competition. No MTSO has the time or is willing to invest the resources in the training and handholding required to get newbies up to speed, so if you do get a job, you'll be on your own. If you can't keep up or meet requirements, you will be terminated. MTSOs are not benevolent organizations willing to give people several chances since there are plenty of experienced MTs looking for work.

You're going to have to decide whether you're going to believe what a school that wants your money is telling you or the people working in the field.

This is not the sort of job you seem to think it is where you can "make your own hours" and work part-time and rake in a big paycheck. Work is drying up, pay is low, and the conditions are like a sweat shop.

Of course, the school is going to paint a completely different picture. It's up to you to decide what you want to do.
