No, you are misinformed. - Coder

Those people are NOT EMPLOYED AS SCRIBES. You are noticing them and assuming they are being used as paid scribes, but that is incorrect.

You are misunderstanding the difference between "scribe" as a paid job and the "documentation" that medical students and residents perform.

Medical students need to learn to document, and residents document their own patient care. This is nothing new. Paper records were full of it, and a lot of dictation consisted of it. Until recently, it was not obvious to MTs because it was in paper records or because they dictated under the attending's name.

Facilities cannot bill for any service provided by a medical student and most cannot bill for resident services, either. To bill, the service has to be documented by the attending. An exception has been made to allow someone to "scribe" for the attending. This is usuly indicated by a statement to the effect that they are scribing for the attending.

So, when you see or hear med students and residents documenting and dictating, they are just being med students and residents. THEY DID NOT GET HIRED AS A SCRIBE.

When you see med students and residents saying they are scribing for the attending, they are just documenting that in order to get the service paid. THEY DID NOT GET HIRED AS A SCRIBE.

This has absolutely nothing to do with this discussion, either. You are dragging in unrelated things and confusing the issue.

I am NOT mistaken about this. Coders are well aware of it. Many of us deal with it every day and supporting documentation is all over the internet.
