punctuation help brain dead today - cheyenne

Punctuation help please... brain dead today.  Is this punctuated correctly? "He is exercising in spite of this and, with this and diet, he has been able to bring his weight down steadily in recent months as I directed him to."

No..try this: - HelpMT

He is exercising in spite of this, and with this and diet he has been able to bring his weight down steadily in recent months as I directed him to." The comma goes before the conjunction "and." Treat "with this and diet he has been able...." as a sentence that can stand on its own.

I would do it.... - GT

just the way you have it. I am old school and we were always taught that "and" takes the place of a comma. If you put a comma before the word "and" your sentence would be something to this effect...He is exercising in spite of this and and with this and diet. You enclose the words that could be left out of the sentence and it would still make sense. With this and diet should be enclosed with commas. Just my take.

You need a comma before AND - Cheesey

Correct English. You have 2 complete sentences. As a rule, you need the comma before "and" to show that.

I would do this.

"He is exercising in spite of this, and with this and diet, he has been able to bring his weight down steadily in recent months as I directed him to."

I respectfully disagree...sm - GT

Regardless of the fact there may be 2 complete sentences, commas are used to enclose any part of a sentence that could be left out without using a period and the sentence would still make sense. If done the way you suggest, the sentence would have to be changed with added periods (taking into account the added info--with this and diet): He is exercising in spite of this. He has been able to bring his weight down steadily in recent months as I directed him to.

Since there is an "and"...He is exercising in spite of this AND (with this and diet) he has been able to bring his weight down...

"With this and diet" is simply more info but the sentence wouldn't make sense if you left out the first "and" so therfore should not be included within the commas.

Because the sentence, "He is exercising in spite of this..." would make no sense on it's own and that is the reason for the extra sentence with the added "and" "he has been able to..."

MTing NOT DEAD
Nov 22, 2011

MT'ers transcription may not be dead after all.  I had an interview with a local hospital that has many clinics and outside services.  They have had all of their transcription outsourced aside from various departments in the actual hospital.  However, they have discovered a better quality of work if they keep their work onsite.  They are pulling ALL of their services back to using on-site transcriptionists.  Some at home work after training, but there will be no MTS ...

Go Live A Dead Issue?
May 25, 2010

It seems the schedule reservation "go live" in my area has now been cancelled until further notice.  I'm in the north region and wonder if any other areas have been using it successfully.  With all these so called improvements coming our way, I'm having a hard time remember what's what.  Does this mean the swapboard isn't going to work anymore or just the schedule/DQS factor with the work allowance of 15 minutes prior/after scheduled shift?  I'm ...

Half-dead Doctors

Why is it that MTs (especially the ones who are starting out) have the opportunity to transcribe dictated reports from doctors that sound half dead, like they are using their last breath to dictate a report?
