peri or para - asdamom

I apologize if this seems like a rather simple question for a lot of you, but I get all confused on this... Is it a PERIumbilical hernia or a PARAumbilical hernia??

i usually type it as dictated. para means "next to" and peri means "near", so who am i to determine if the hernia was "next to" or "near" the umbilicus? and they're basically synonymous anyway.

Exactly! The synonymous nature of the terms is what confused me and sometimes I can differentiate from the doc; others no way (my ESL doc).

Patient has had panniculectomy in the past and has a well-healed scar except for some shininess to it and a tendency for one small area to have superficial dehiscence with bleeding if pressure placed. The doc clearly says, "...recommended having the patient put s/l *peri-dressing* over his..." and later "...have obtained several of these dressings for the patient." Can't find anything. Thanks in advance. :-) ...
