dictated "a few ccs" - rh

Posted: Feb 22, 2012

dictated:  " I aspirated and got out a few ccs of serosanguinous fluid"

the "few ccs" bothers me.  Am I correct in assuming there is no apostrophe?

i.e., it would not be "a few cc's"  ...  right?

I would spell out in this case. - few cubic centimeters

You only use the abbreviation if there is a value.

a few ccs - rh

[ In Reply To ..]
thank you!

dangerous abbreviation - mtms

[ In Reply To ..]
cc is one of the dangerous abbreviations. My autocorrect changes it to the correct mL that is supposed to be used, unless your account specifics says to use it. I would probably either spell it out cubic centimeters or type "a few mL".
In this case spell out mL - Old Anon
[ In Reply To ..]
It would be "a few milliliters".
that depends on client preference, and - the abbreviation is dangerous,
[ In Reply To ..]
the word cubic centimeters is not dangerous, it is the abbreviation cc that is.

not on JCAHO's list of dangerous abbreviations - again

[ In Reply To ..]
It is on their list of abbreviations to be included on the dangerous abbreviation list. Interestingly, it was originally the national pharmacist board that pushed for cc to be eliminted and replaced with mL.

It is in BOS to be used as mL.

So using cc or using mL is left up to client/employer/personal preference.

that would be all find and dandy if there were a value - otherwise spell out and

[ In Reply To ..]
cubic centimeters spelled out is not dangerous, just the abbreviation.

Even if this client uses BOS, cubic centimeters spelled out is acceptable!

cc or mL spelled out - again

[ In Reply To ..]
My point was not that it should be abbreviated rather than spelled out. My point was that the choice to use cc or mL (whether abbreviated or spelled out) should be governed by the rules of the person paying your paycheck rather than flatly saying it is on the dangerous abbreviation list (when in fact, it is not).
So to answer the OP question, putting it bluntly - spell out cubic centimeters!
[ In Reply To ..]
ignore all the other nonsense.
My understanding is that mL is abbreviated if there is a value in front of it.. - jh
[ In Reply To ..]
I dont think few qualifies as a value in the true sense..Although I could be wrong cause God knows every single QA person does things differently..

whoa...appalled by much of this advice here - CMT/QA

[ In Reply To ..]
Depending on whether or not your facility allows the use of "cc," it would be either "a few cc's" or "a few mL's." I know it looks awkward, in the same way that "5's" does, but it is correct.

I am truly taken aback by all these people saying to spell out and otherwise put in things the dictator did not even say. Ack!

it is supposed to be spelled out - according to BOS

[ In Reply To ..]
If there is no value.

5 cc
a few cubic centimeters

and transcribed "a few ccs" - rh

[ In Reply To ..]
Thanks for all the replies.

I ended up transcribing as dictated, WITHOUT the apostrophe. That was my original question anyway - not whether to spell out the term or to use mL or cc.

If Doc had dictated "a few ounces of fluid" this would be a moot point. But he said "A few ccs of fluid." So that's what I went with, without the apostrophe.

Right or wrong, it's my client's preference to use cc, not mL. I was simply asking if it needed an apostrophe or not. lol :o)
