"There are no erythema or satellite lesions" - medgeorgia

Posted: Jun 17, 2011

The person I work for told me I made an error in grammar and that it should read:

"There are no erythema or satellite lesions."  I do not see any way this could be correct.

I think it should probably say "There is no erythema, and there are no satellite lesions."  Any comments?

I would say there is no erythema or satellite lesions - no msg

There ARE no erythema just does not - sound right at all SM

I think the way you changed the sentence is much better. You could even say there are no satellite lesions or erythema.

How about "there is no erythema nor satellite lesions? n - oldtimer

.

"Is" is correct because of connector "or" and... - the singular noun being closest to verb.

In short, the doc is mistaken. The rule is that if the verb had been closer to "satellite lesions" (as someone above reworded it), then yes, it would be "are," but since the doc dictated the "erythema" closest to the verb, then "is" is correct.

There is no erythema or satellite lesions.

There are no satellite lesions or erythema.

If the sentence was something completely different, using "and" as a connector, then you DO use the plural verb, talking about all of them, but not with the connector "or". That depends on which is closest to the verb.

Hope that helps. ;-)

Correction--whoever you work for is mistaken-- - was thinking you said doctor corrected you. nm

If "There are no erythema or satellite lesions" is correct, then the following would also be correct: "There is no satellite lesions or erythema." Also: "Erythema are there."

"There is no erythema, nor satellite lesions" MIGHT be acceptable.

What might be "most" correct: "There is no erythema; there are no satellite lesions."

Because the person for whom you work is telling you what you typed is wrong, the onus is on that person to provide you with proof why you are wrong (e.g., a page number in the BOS 3 where you can review the proof).

You're the "accused"; you don't have to prove that you're right. The "accuser" is required to prove that you're wrong.
