Lots of questions please TIA (sm) - tia

Posted: Oct 09, 2010

OK - I'm a straight typing transcriptionist who wants to explore VR - seems most people hate it - I'd like to try it and see.  My company doesn't offer it.

Are there any companies what have editing on Bayscribe currently?

What is the best VR platform to work on and which is the worst?  (Don't know the difference in any of them)

Have heard of Speechmagic for Bayscribe (but who has it?)

eScription and Exeditor at Transtech (? where else) and how's that?

and heard of M-Modal (what's that and who has that?)

Which is better/worse and why?

Is one word expander better than another when working in VR?  I've always used the one built into Bayscribe so I'm afraid I'd have to rebuild my expander but if I have to which one would be the best?

Editing on any platform is just that - editing - mt

It doesn't really matter which platform - I have worked on several and currently work on 2 different ones.

You need to train your eye to edit something that you did not type. If you can do that, you can do VR. I actually prefer it to transcribing and make more money at it because I am very fast at editing.

Thanks for is autocorrect sufficient as an expander? Don't want to spend $$ - tia - NM

Heck no. You need an expander that can do things like - s/m

delete one or more words forward/backward, change punctuation and capitalization like a comma to a period and cap the next word, block and delete text, block and move text, and any other repetitive editing tasks you routinely do. AutoCorrect can only expand text. You may think an expander is too expensive, but you earn that $$ back in no time at all and make more $$ in the future. I would not do this without my Instant Text.
Second S/M for sure. It's also critically important that - Skilled Editor

the dictionaries of expansions you develop BELONG TO YOU and are PORTABLE AND COMPATIBLE with other programs so you can take them with you wherever you work. If you use them as extensively as you should and cannot take them, changing jobs could be ruinously expensive, effectively trapping you in one position and a true disaster if let go. I would NEVER accept a position with a company that did not agree the dictionaries I built belonged to me and made them portable.

It is okay to use a company's built-in expander IF you can copy/e-mail your dictionaries to your own computer AND IF your dictionaries are compatible with other very common expander programs.

Regarding what program, get either Shorthand or InstantText. They're both highly sophisticated programs written for our work, very compatible with most systems out there (companies plan their systems to work with them), accept dictionaries from many other expanders, are really not that expensive and can be purchased over time, are tried and true, and have a lot of users who are happy to pass on very valuable tips and lists to download. There's just no reason at present not to go with a leader, and this is the very last place anyone should want to save $50 or so.

BTW, TIA, have you actually determined that you cannot import your BayScribe (or whatever the program is) dictionaries to another expander program? If they're portable, compatibility might well determine what expander to buy.
Thank you! (sm) - tia

Thanks for the information on expanders. It has been so long since I've used any other program besides Bayscribe. I wish I could go back in time and have used one expander this whole time and really utilized it and transported it with me believe me. I am so far behind the game technologically it isn't even funny (especially when it comes to VR). My thing is, my current job has me so broke I cannot afford to invest in anything right now to get started with another job (and as an aside, do not see how companies can call themselves employers and then not provide what you need to do the job)! I prefer to use my own equipment for this new job but of course my Windows version is not compatible. I just bought a new computer and loaded Windows 7 64-bit & it is not compatible so now would need to swap to 32-bit. Then I would have to buy Word and now an expander OR rent the company computer which hardly seems right or worth it. I just have a lot to figure out. I might have to use the autocorrect feature until I make some money and then invest in an expander and convert those over. Thanks for reminding me to check about transporting Bayscribe's expander abbrev. and if they are able to be transported which expander would be the best to invest in. So important. It looks like Shorthand is the cheapest at 100 so I'm leaning in that direction. Don't see where you can buy any over time (basically pay monthly to use them like renting I suppose? and I'm not going to do that). I realize MT is an investment on our end and it is necessary to do it for ourselves to increase our own productivity, etc., I just wish companies would provide some of this stuff and realize our productivity is their gain too :) Thanks!
Thanks, I have a question (sm) - tia

I've never used an expander to do anything but expand so you can imagine that I'm thrilled with the idea of utilizing it in a different way for editing - seriously, it makes sense - but since I've never done it, I'm confused as to how for example you would make a shortcut to do something like change a period to a comma or vice versa. Can you give me an idea? I realize it has to do with recording a combination of keystrokes and command keys probably - wow this is all so over my head but I know I can learn it and am determined to do this! Thanks
Yes, you record the keyboard shortcuts that work in your platform or - s/m

current application and use a short form to expand all those keystrokes at once. It's kind of like writing real macros to do a lot of steps all at once but without having to know macro language. If you can create a keyboard shortcut, it can be turned into an expander entry and run with just a couple of letters that make sense to you.

from you about the type of computer you have, etc. I used to work for a company that used Bayscribe. My company was sold to a large MTSO. During the transition, we were told the expander in Bayscribe could be imported into Shorthand with their platform (type of M-Modal) and the techs helped us do that. Before the actual transition, my computer died (I had XP) and I bought another computer (Windows 7, 64 bit). At first, I was told that this could not be done with a 64 bit computer, but that was not correct. Shorthand 10 for windows works very well with Windows 7 64 bit. The tech told me that I could download SH 10 for a free trial (which I did) for one month, and then SH10 had various options for purchasing it. I went with a 6-month deal for a very reasonable price, and after that did a deal for 1 year (again, very reasonable price). This info is on the SH10 website. Just my experience.

BTW, I was completely where you are now as far as not knowing anything at all about any of this stuff. I was sheltered with Bayscribe for years, had no idea about expander programs, VR, etc. With help from others, especially other co-workers, I slowly learned. I am now trying to learn about these wonderful SH combinations to build my speed with VR, having read many posts by Skilled Editor and someone else, I think VR Editor? Hope this helps.

Thank you all for replying! (nm) - tia

Accentus US Doing Lots Of Hiring?

Lots Of Time Spent On ADT
Apr 29, 2014

I spend enormous amounts of time doing clervical work for free at the beginning of a report..looking up doctor names that are not on the lists we have been given, figuring out which is the date of admit, consult, etc.  If everything was programmed in and we just had to download a report and transcribe, we would be making a lot more and if the speech recognition would stop putting words down that the doctors are not saying so that we do not have to clean it all up we would have more time to ...

I am glad to see that some kind of movement is finally happing regarding a decent minimum wage. Then the article went on to say that she and her husband Mark just bought an apartment in New York City around Gramercy Park for 10.5 MILLION DOLLARS. Nice to not have to be able to care about money. This job is not worth the trouble.  It certainly does nothing for me when I open the "paycheck" every 2 weeks and see that despite my 40 "power hours" every week, I made less than last time.  No matter what, I cannot manage to make a decent living here any more.  I am over it.  Sad to admit, and yes, the shame is on me, but I do wish for NJA or even better, to be FIRED from this place.  Just had to get this off my chest before I burst into flames of fury at the horrid qu ...
