I am going from years of straight transc to VR - any tips?

Posted: Jan 09, 2013

Do you listen to whole report, or spot check meds, numbers, etc with the audio? Any tips to improve accuracy and/or speed?  This old dog is going to have to learn some new tricks and I welcome any advice.  Thanks.

You do have to listen to the whole report, just like always - Des

Even if it looks right at first glance, VR makes tons of critical errors, especially on the med lists. Like Actonel vs Timolol, clonidine vs Klonopin, and it's not always that the dosages are given, as you know.

VR will put in dxs that weren't even dictated, or omit some that were clearly dictated, but things surely looked okay at first glance.

ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS LISTEN TO THE WHOLE REPORT. And yes, it will slow you down and you will lose money. Why do you think we've all been screaming about this?

VR my opinion... - radMT

Yup, all in all its a DECREASE in pay however you look at it. As with straight typing there are good and bad. And same with VR. There are perfect reports at times where you can speed up and make it through quick and others where you struggle with background noise creating extra words, added punctuation, missing text. etc.

VR pay cuts - Molly

The best advice I can give you is be prepared for a massive cut in pay. The work is boring and you will literally make a quarter to less than half of what you made transcribing.

After Years And Years Of Being IC, Obtained Employee Status At A Co. Sm
Nov 26, 2012

Thought that after not having enough work for a couple years now and always chasing work, I'd now have a "real job" as an employee and wouldn't have to worry about a steady paycheck and paying the bills anymore. The reason I thought this was because at the interview and in their professional company emails, they use all the "real job" words:  Shift, scheduled hours, overtime, PTO, benefits, etc.  I felt relieved to finally have a "job." What a big bunch of BS! I was "hired" ...

3 Years. Question: How Many More Years Do You Plan To Be An MT/editor?
Dec 20, 2013

There is much speculation about the field of transcription - how many of us actually plan to be here 5 years, 10 years, 20 years from now. I realize that the field is going to change, which will contribute to your answer. Will there be enough transcriptionists/editors to fill the need in 5 years and in 10 years? Will the industry be forced out of offshoring because of taxes? Will there be a need even for editors if VR gets better? These are all unanswered questions, but my question is, what ...

Heard Of "Med Transc From A To Z" ???
Apr 26, 2010

Hello there!I am new around here.I have been considering training as a MT for some time now. I was looking at colleges that offer this program such as Everett College in WA.I went to a seminar this weekend and met a lady named Deborah Burns who has written "Medical Transcription from A to Z" This is a do at home training course that some of the colleges use. It is significantly cheaper than the 9 month college certificate. AND she stated that if you do well enough on the assignments, you ...

I Worked For M*Modal A Couple Of Years Ago Or So And I Worked For Medquist Several Years Ago.
Aug 08, 2014

Lately, I've been getting legal notices mailed to my home from I believe the east coast somewhere informing me of a class action lawsuit against M*Modal and inviting me to joint if I have a claim.  I don't think I have a claim, but then again with all the shady practices in this business, I'm not so sure.  I'm just curious what the heck is going on. Anyone care to give me the lowdown? ...

Please, Let's Get This Straight.
Dec 07, 2014

Nuance is doing YOU, the MT, no favor when they say they willl pay the minimum wage.  They are REQUIRED by federal law to pay you the minimum wage based upon your state's minimum wage rate.  If you think that you will drop below minimum wage because of #s of reports sent to QA, errors, or whatever, understand by federal law, Nuance has no choice but to pay up, they cannot skirt it.  It is s a federal law!  There are a lot of erroneous posts on here.  Please do your ...

ASR Vs Straight Typing
Oct 15, 2010

Got new accounts for the last 2 weeks that are not ASR (yet) so have been doing about 90% straight typing.  I have been averaging about $20 more per day than when I do ASR.  They can sell whatever snake oil they want, I can type faster and make more money straight typing than I can with their much-touted fabulous ASR --- EVEN ON BRAND NEW UNFAMILIAR ACCOUNTS.  ...

Are Any Of You Transcribing Straight Into EMR?
Dec 29, 2010

I was wondering if any of you are transcribing straight into EMR and if you are, how does that work? How different is it to standard MT? Do you use it in conjunction with VR? Do you work for a large or small hospital, clinic, or physician's office? Specialty? Anything else I forgot to ask?  LOL ...

Ok....give It To Me STRAIGHT!
Dec 07, 2011

I have been considering going to Andrews to become an MT for and I have never done it because I get on these boards and get scared to death! I have worked in the Medical field for 13 years (as a clinical tech and surgery....included in that is some limited transcription and scribing). I now stay home with my kids. I have one in school and the other in pre-school. I would love to be an MT because I love the medical field and I would love something I can do from home. I do not expect to get rich. ...

TTD - Setting It Straight
Jun 10, 2012

I used to work there for approx. a year or so, before it really went down the toilet. I believe that sheer GREED set it and that's when it went downhill. Although I no longer work there, I have kept contact with some pretty reliable people. There are "100s" who are on the books to work; however, they work when they want, IF they want - there is absolutely no consistency to schedule or hours or days, nothing. Thus, the need to have that many people; the HOPE that someone will be working ...

Only Straight-up Opinions, Please...
Dec 10, 2013

Okay, I need some straight-up serious opinions, no bashing.  Does anyone like VR? Whille it may be wonderful for the MTSOs and the physicians, is it good for us? Does it really up productivity while reducing repetitive physical strain? Because I'm not feeling it. I don't like jazz music.  I don't enjoy the discordance. This is what VR feels like to me.  There is no flow, no rhythm, you start and stop, start and stop. The critical thinking aspect that is so vital to ...

I Am Now Getting My 9th CCM In 7.5 Years. I Have Had
Dec 04, 2009

horrible ESL accounts, horrible teaching facilities with residents who don't know how to dictate.  By the time you get used to them, they're gone.  I have been insulted by taking an enormous pay cut for the over rated, under performing ASR.  Through all of this, I have mostly been happy with my job.  Now, however, I will finally say that I hate MQ.  I hope they lose all their accounts to nice mom and pop people.  I hope they go bankrupt and have to move in ...
