Shorthand Versus Speedtype - CAMT

I'm trying to decide on an expander and already eliminated IT as beyond my capabilities. I'm looking now at SH or ST.

Can anyone explain to me what differences there are between these 2 programs? I'm flipping back and forth between the 2 websites and am I missing something or are they essentially the exact same program but one is less expensive?

Also, can anyone tell me if either or both of these programs allow identical names for abbreviations or do they require distinct and separate names? I believe with IT I could use the same abbreviation and have several options pop up from which to choose but I can't tell if the same applies to SH or ST.

Instant Text can be used just the way you feel comfortable with, and if you need assistance we can help you set it up the way you want it.

Shorthand and Speedtype are the same programs. Speedtype is more expensive, but offers more personalized tech support.

In traditional expanders such as SH, Speedtype and others you cannot have the same short form for different expansions as you can have in Instant Text. You would need to make a different short form for each and every entry.

You can use 1 abbrev for multiple choices. - SH user

Hopefully I am understanding correctly. For example, my "inad" brings up 2 entries: "In no acute distress" and "in no apparent distress." Choose the correct one and enter. There is a learn curve to set up such entries, but once you do it a couple times, it is easy-peasy. Have not used Speedtype, so cannot help you with the comparison.

How did you get around the "this abbreviation already in use!" message that pops up? I'd love the be able to have several choices for the same abbreviation, such as your example with the "INAD." Can you elaborate on how to get around this? Thanks so much!

Might as well stick with "INAD." : )

To make a list, you need to add {@INPUT @SINGLE and a closing }

This is what my "Text to Type" box looks like this:

{@INPUT @SINGLE
in no acute distress
in no apparent distress
}

The list can be as long as you need. BTW, those are not parentheses, but the squigglier ones. Sorry, cannot recall what they are called. Let me know if I am not coming across very clearly--tend to have trouble explaining things.

I have used shorthand (various editions for years). I had problems with it on my new computer and switched over to Speedtype 10. I had trouble getting SP10 to accept the files I switched from Shorthand. Now, shorthand is acting like a child. I am working on EditScript 9.12 and SpeedType 10.01b on my PC with Windows XP Pro and Word 2007 with very few problems. I bought a new computer which uses Windows 7 and Word 2003 and cannot get SpeedType to work on the new machine. I just installed SpeedType & I am FRUSTRATED! Could someone pleeeeease give me the specific steps to copy a block of text that you have just typed into the SpeedType dictionary? Since the old Smartype does not support Windows 7 or 8, only XP, I bought the new (not Stedman's anymore) Smartype. It is not very good at all. I contacted Speedtype, which looked really great, similiar to the old Smartype (I can macro large blocks of text for OP reports) and spoke with the CEO!!! REALLY?? She was fabulous and told me there was a shortcut to get your old blocks of text into Speedtype without cutting and pasting. I have not tried the 15 day trial period yet ...

I am thinking about taking a position using an EMDAT platform. This is not a big company, just a nice woman who works from home and employs a number of transcriptionists. I have never worked in a platform, so really have no clue what this entails. My biggest concern is being able to use SpeedType, as I have thousands of entries and rely on it heavily to do my work. Someone recently had an issue with Shorthand and Autocorrect both operating at the same time, and they were apparently fighting with each other, because both of them had some of the same expansions/corrections, so the user was getting duplicate text. Ok, I downloaded Short Hand expander program but, for the life of me, it looks just like the standard auto expander/auto correct that comes with word. Since I'm unable to use MS auto correct with my current platform I explored Shorthand, a program I used years ago. They've gotten too smart for me. All I want to do is add words on the fly. Does it work interactively in MS Word? Can you easily transfer your entries from Autocorrect to Shorthand? I was checking out Instant Text but apparently now you have to download it, not avail on disk. I think this means if your computer crashes and/or you want it on a new computer you have to RE-BUY it (at almost $200)...yeah I don't think so! ...

I'm getting a company computer and will be working on that one and mine. They don't allow Shorthand (or any other program) to be put on their computer, so need to convert my Shorthand to Word autocorrect entries for the work computer. Don't know why this is not working . . . I need to get the "Suggestion Window Font" to a bigger size. I have changed the font to say Times New Roman 14 and it shows that it changed it in the "Suggestion Window Font" but when I go into my report and run a shorthand word it stays small, never changed.
