Going digital - transcriptionist for 17 years - TerriA

Posted: Dec 02, 2012

I have been a transcriptionist for 17 years.  I am currently working for a hospital FT and an orthopedic surgeon PT.  My private practice account is finally making the switch to going digital from microcassettes. I have been researching transcription/dictation options and quite frankly my head is spinning.  I am not certain what my/our best options are regarding foot pedal, voice recording with encryption capabilities and/or FSP site.  This particular physician has been resistant to change and their office staff is not computer saavy, so I'd like to suggest the least complicated method, as well as keep their costs down.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I really recommend spending a flat up-front fee for something over paying for something monthly, but I will share what I do.

For one client, they bought an Olympus recorder and transcription software. Total was about $1000. Once the doctor dictates, someone in the office downloads the voice files and it is sent to me encrypted. I return the MS-Word documents using MPTools6 via encrypted email. The current price for this product is about $65. The downside to using Olympus is that you need their foot pedal (although that is included in the software package). The reason it is a downside is that you still need another foot pedal for any other kind of work you do, but since I already had one, it was no big deal for me. BTW, I got a back up Olympus pedal off eBay for $19 shipped.

Another client did not want to invest in the software and the doctor's wife sends me the voice files through mydocsonline.com. I pay for that myself. It is $30 a month for up to 3 users. Again I return the documents using MPTools6.

If you look at the website for MPTools6, you will see other products that you could consider using.

Thank you for your response. I only have one account outside my FT hospital work, and I do not foresee taking on more work. I believe the ortho's office will likely not want to invest in software, so your second scenario is likely the route we will take, at least to start.

I have been on the docsonline and that seems simple enough. I also took a look at MPTools. Nice way to stay organized.

Thanks again.

Thanks for your time.

Old Fashioned Transcriptionist In A Digital Age.
Apr 06, 2011

Greetings to all. I would love some insight and advice from all you younger MTs who have been working online from home. A little history - I attended Medical Transcription school 32 years ago, before we even had computers. Worked off and on since then, my last job as an IC with a family practice clinic client consisting of four providers. They were my client for 12 years. I actually picked up and dropped off tapes and transcription every day. They have now switched to digital records using a tem ...

Been A Transcriptionist For Over 10 Years
Nov 13, 2013

I have been a transcriptionist for over 10 years and I recently started a job for a small transcription company that requires 100% accuracy for all reports.  I continually get flagged with emails saying, "Please find the punctuation mistake and apply back with why" These are most always just one or two comma mistakes in the whole report.  Do all of you turn in reports with absolutely no comma or semicolon mistakes at all or am I just an inadequate transcriptionist?  Frustrated. ...

25+ Years Medical Transcriptionist Considering
Apr 29, 2013

Hello:  I am 58 years old and have been doing medical transcription for 25+ years.  The group I transcribe for online is transitioning over to total EMR, thus will be leaving me without a job in the not too distant future.  I don't do Acute care, so there are next to no opportunities for other transcription jobs.  There are no jobs to be had in my very, very small town (including the 25-bed hospital) so I'm considering going with online classes for training and cert ...

Been Transcriptionist 20 Years But New At IC Work, Need Advice
Sep 03, 2014

Hello Everyone: I have been a Medical transcriptionist for approximately 20 years, but I am brand new at any contract work and need some sound advice. I have always worked for a doctor's office or hospital, so they have always supplied me with equipment, programs, etc. I have decided to go this route as I need a more flexible schedule, but I have never worked where I have been paid by the line, so pretty clueless about it, even in the sense of what is good pay.  I have appli ...

A Medical Transcriptionist Of 10 Years Lost Her Job Today
May 17, 2011

Dear Fellow Transcriptionists: I just want to vent and tell you what happened to me today.  I lost my job today because I got a 97.9 on my quality review, which was done on my work in about 3 years. I was working as an independent contractor and I was told that I was being terminated and when I asked if I could be put on another account, they said they were not hiring employees just independent contractors, no employees. I am so upset. I have been a transcriptionist for 10 years this ...

What Would Be A Reasonable Hourly Wage For A Medical Transcriptionist Of 12.5 Years?
Nov 30, 2012

Hi: I have worked for the same hospital for 12.5 years, so there is a lot of loyalty there. I live in a southern state in the USA. I get paid an hourly pay plus $0.47 incentive for anything over 90 minutes. My hourly pay to me is low, but not below $10.00 an hour. Is 20.00 per hour appropriate or am I wrong? Thanks in advance for the advice. PS: I am not here for a debate just want to know what is a good hourly pay for 12.5 years. Thanks, Mel ...

After Years And Years Of Being IC, Obtained Employee Status At A Co. Sm
Nov 26, 2012

Thought that after not having enough work for a couple years now and always chasing work, I'd now have a "real job" as an employee and wouldn't have to worry about a steady paycheck and paying the bills anymore. The reason I thought this was because at the interview and in their professional company emails, they use all the "real job" words:  Shift, scheduled hours, overtime, PTO, benefits, etc.  I felt relieved to finally have a "job." What a big bunch of BS! I was "hired" ...

3 Years. Question: How Many More Years Do You Plan To Be An MT/editor?
Dec 20, 2013

There is much speculation about the field of transcription - how many of us actually plan to be here 5 years, 10 years, 20 years from now. I realize that the field is going to change, which will contribute to your answer. Will there be enough transcriptionists/editors to fill the need in 5 years and in 10 years? Will the industry be forced out of offshoring because of taxes? Will there be a need even for editors if VR gets better? These are all unanswered questions, but my question is, what ...

Aug 08, 2014

Lately, I've been getting legal notices mailed to my home from I believe the east coast somewhere informing me of a class action lawsuit against M*Modal and inviting me to joint if I have a claim.  I don't think I have a claim, but then again with all the shady practices in this business, I'm not so sure.  I'm just curious what the heck is going on. Anyone care to give me the lowdown? ...

This company expects the impossible out of their workers while accepting horrible quality audio. ADVICE NEEDED RE: GOING DIGITAL
Jun 21, 2011

Not sure if I have the correct board, but I am looking for advice on how to get my doctors to go digital.  I currently transcribe for a small group of doctors who use tapes.  I am trying to figure out an inexpensive way to get them to go digital.  It has to be a relatively user friendly method since they are very busy and will not want to take the time to learn all kinds of new stuff.  They also will not want to spend a lot to convert to digital.  I currently have ExpressScribe, so I know t ...

Digital Dictation Questions
Mar 25, 2011

I work in a small cancer center with three dictating doctors.  We are still on microcassette tapes, believe it or not!  We just got a new doctor who really wants digital (I do, too).  He has suggested Olympus equipment.  I was thinking of proposing that we go completely with Olympus, dictation/transcription equipment and software.  However, I've researched a little bit about ExpressScribe, GearPlayer, and Phillips equipment.  My main goal is to get it ...

Converting Tape To Digital

Anyone know of a machine that will convert cassette dictation tapes to digital format?  I do work for a doc who uses tapes (he doesn't want to convert to digital).   It's a good job, but I'd much prefer to transcribe using Express Scribe instead of the cassette machine. I've seen some ads on the Internet, but would prefer to go to a reputable store. Thanks for any help!   ...
