We could fix some of this mess if... - sick of it 2

Posted: Feb 18, 2011

the patient that signs all the privacy statements when entering the hospital only knew his medical information was going to "another country" what are the chances they are going to say, "Sure, go ahead and send it."  Hey, isn't that what "privacy is all about??  I don't think all the old steelworkers and other unionized people would go for that.  If only they knew!!  That is just not what someone sits around and thinks about...Hmmm, wonder where my med recs are today??  They need to know!!!

People know, they dont care. OS MT just get body of dictation - to do, they dont see pt info. nm

That depends on who you work for. Lots of OS MTs - DO see everything, SS# included. nm

[ In Reply To ..]

No, they stopped that years ago when OS was holding pt - info hostage. Now only suits see that. nm

SS# - Medtyper

Well I have an account where they use the SS# as the patient's account number, so I get numerous names and SS#'s every day.
This belongs on the OFFSHORE CONCERNS forum. - NM

So what have YOU done to prevent your med info going OS? - Has you forbidden dr to send SM

[ In Reply To ..]
your medical records OS? What about your financial info cause that goes OS,too.

just sayin.. - sick of it 2

If the general public knew what was going on, I don't think anyone would agree to it. I think they should be informed. Then much of this craziness would stop!

Dont you just love all the MTs who are so quick to - pooh-pooh any mention of fixing things? -sm

As a patient, I absolutely HATE the idea that my info. is likely floating around in India or China somewhere.

The poster above is wrong - most people have no idea their records are being transcribed out of the United States. Heck - most of the non-medical people I talk to don't even know they HAVE a medical record! One of them just thought the doctors had really good memories!

I asked my own PCP one time if she knew where her work was getting transcribed. "Here in the clinic," she said. She doesn't even know it's being outsourced (to the same company I work for), let alone OFFSHORED.

Ignorance is bliss, I guess.
No, I don't love them LOL sm - sick of it 2

It boggles my mind how anyone could just sit back and let this keep happening. Obviously, it is only getting worse. When I talked to the Fed Labor and Wage, they said this is the first time they have heard of this problem--the low pay, no pay, no work situation.
Fed Labor and Wage - wow

You said: "When I talked to the Fed Labor and Wage, they said this is the first time they have heard of this problem--the low pay, no pay, no work situation."

And I'm sure there's only one person working there who answers phones. How lucky are you to have gotten that person who knows everything that's said at the Fed Labor and Wage? Wow.
Well, the CEO of the - sick of it 2

place that outsourced my job told a patient that her reports would not be sent to India if she didn't want them to be. She voiced her concerns. In my opinion those reports are ours to decide if they go or if they stay. I will not have mine sent. Hey, by the way, thanks for the support :-)

I've told plenty of people - Most do not care - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
On forums and with people I know in real life, I've made it a point to mention that medical information is offshored and that there are privacy issues with that. No one seems to really care.

Besides, in this town, most offices don't transcribe anything. My ob/gyn and eye doctor both use old Xeroxed forms that they just scribble on. The dentist has nothing more than a few coded notes in their computer for each patient. My GP USED to transcribe, but the local hospital bought expensive networked software a few years ago and forced the issue until they got every single local doctor to subscribe to it, too. Just to offset the cost, of course. The software makes doctors and nurses type in the info, and they suck at it. I'm constantly having to make corrections to my own medical records.

So no one offshores their work around here, but no one uses MTs, either.

Whenever I have a doctor's appointment, the first thing - I do is specifically ask that she make a note - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
at the beginning of her dictation on my office visit that she requests that report to be transcribed in house, instead of send to the outside transcription service.

It's a small thing, but imagine if every patient nationwide asked their doctors to do that, and every doctor complied with those wishes.

One drop of water doesn't amount to much, but you get enough drops of water together, and you can wash away an entire landscape.

What if they do not have an inside MT--my doctor office - does not. NM

Then the doctors should ask Med. Records to use - only non-offshoring MTSOs.
[ In Reply To ..]
.

A good portion of our local docs are just going - to strait EMR where they

[ In Reply To ..]
put in the info themselves. So, no worries, no offshoring or need for MTs at all.

If the MTSO they use outsources, changes are pretty good that it is still going to go offshore and maybe have an American check it even if you asked for it not to.

I have told people - they do not care

[ In Reply To ..]
They trust their physician is making sound choices on their behalf. I also think it's MORE dangerous to have the SS# given to a US MT than an Indian one, so if that arguement is going to hold water, then not one single solitary US home-based MT should handle a record.

I have told people - earlymusicus

I tell everyone I know about this offshoring of their medical records. They don't know that that is going on and when they find out, they are appalled, not to mention angry! Many of them say they are going to talk to their doctor about it.

Don Quixote striking at the off-shoring MTSOs and AHDI windmills! LOL

Have told lots of ppl & they dont care. When I say $ info goes OS - they dont care about that either. nm

any of health information really doesn't concern me, but the thoughts of how many American's have access to my financial info is scary. Luckily, my company doesn't use any SS#.

have you written to? Have you even watched the news in this year? Yes, a handful of unhappy MTs is big news. Well they are to the handful of unhappy MTs.

How does all your ranting stand up to the fact that there are tens of thousands of HAPPY MTs? When you get the press attention you think you want, what do you say when they interview the happy MTs? Ooops, we didn't know about them? Ooops, it's just us unhappy MTs that are stomping our feet?

If you take a position for less money than you can live off of, it's your issue isnt it?
Gawd - how can anyone in MT have this complacent, - defeatist attitude? No wonder MT sux. nm

but rather enlightening the public about what is happening with their medical records. If enough people wrote to Ed Schultz (who BTW is all over the offshoring problem this country has)possibly he would do a segment on it,the public might learn something, and possibly it could become an important issue. Who knows? I know there are MTs on here who are very well spoken on this issue and I also know that I have been directed to internet sites that discuss this issue. I so wish some of those well informed MTs would respond to this and if they did not want to write, we could at least use their posts as a guide for what to say.
I agree (sm) - sick of it 2

The only reason I posted this in the first place is that it is happening to numerous people i know personally. I think your opinion might differ from mine if you have been with a company foe a long time. Trust me, the just being hired and running out of work issues are defy happening or I would not care.. I have worked in a hospital for the past 15 or so years and have had no reason to even use this website. However, now I am thrust into the "MT Service" world, and it is what I expected and worse. I agree that the solution is giving this information to the patients and this madness will stop..not overnight..but at least it is worth a try.

most do not apply to low paying MTSOs, or turn it down once offered - try the new MT board - make a difference

Here I sit twiddling my thumbs because I can't work my regular schedule. When I signed on today, the audio was so low I could barely hear it. Muddled through the first report, straining. Second report comes up...same thing. Tried everything I could think of to no avail, unplugging speakers, turning off and on, etc, rebooting. Called Tech. They identified no problem. I have never wanted to be fired so badly in my life.  I have worked in some real feces factories in my day, but this one beats them all.  How on earth do they expect any MLS to care about any of these reports if they aren't going to pay us a decent wage?  I hope the stock crashes.  If the rest of the company is managed as poorly as the transcription division, it's only a matter of time until it does.  ...
