This news would be most beneficial if it would make national news or headlines. I honestly believe the public does not realilze where some of their medical records are typed. They just assume the good ol' USA. While the public is privy to some jobs being offshored/outsourced, I do not think they know to what extent of how many industries this affects including the medical transcription industry. Patient's should have to sign an authorization at their doctor's office just like a HIPAA form stating they agree and/or acknowledge that their medical records may be typed in a foreign country by people who cannot speak ENGLISH.

California does not allow offshoring either - sm

Despite having ahh-nold for our gov, at least California bans the offshoring of medical records also. This was implemented in the aftermath of an offshore transcriptionist who contacted a client hospital (because she hadn't been paid by her contractor) and threatened to post all of the patient medical records on the internet if she wasn't paid.
So far, I think that California and Ohio are the only states that have banned offshoring. But hopefully more states will start doing this too. It's just not safe to have our private medical records going over into other countries.
I guess that's why there are few MTSOs based in - Cali. Still, I know for a fact that - sm

the clinic my PCP works for outsources most of their transcription, and the company they outsource to offshores. I'm sure The Pigs have found ways to get around that little detail, just like they do with everything else.
They may not be based here but - travelinMT

they have contracts with hospitals in Cali, and since they offshore there is no way to prove they are not sending it to India. I worked for a big Medical Care System in No. Cal and they booted all the transcriptionists out and they were offered jobs with the MTSO that took their jobs. That MTSO is one of the most loved (Not) MTSO's you read about on here that does offshore to India.
So they are getting around the supposed law somehow.

Offshore Transcription Stories Wanted- Medical Malpractice Cases Related To Offshore Transcription M Oct 15, 2009A legal contact was inquiring about the connection of medical mistakes related to off-shored transcription mistakes. I have told him to review these boards and hopefully he will benefit from the information here.
While he did not discuss the exact case, I think that he will be able to use the off-shore transcription issue to his client's benefit or at least highlight that the provider in question does not have as rigorous control on processing records as other pr ...

TCI Out Of Ohio Jan 01, 2013Interested to know if anyone currently works for TCI or has worked for them in the past. From what I gather, they have a lot of ESLs/fast talkers, give you three days to get off of QA, and if you need to send work to QA after that 3-day period, it should be an almost-never occurrence, as they do not seem to be very tolerable with sending work to QA. ...

Alpha Out Of Ohio Aug 30, 2013Looking at their ad on MT Daily. Any information would be helpful. Are there any benefits for FT or is it IC's only? The ad says IC. Just routine information would be helpful. ...

Outsourcing To India Jun 15, 2010On numerous occasions over the past year I was told by my CCM that the reason they are outsourcing to India is because there is a shortage of qualified MTs because the average age of an MT is 55 and they are starting to retired. Like the infamous ***** and is ridiculous claim about 650 lph on ASR, that MTs have an IQ of about 6.

NEW NBC SHOW ABOUT OUTSOURCING Aug 31, 2010 I JUST WANT TO VENT. Hospitals/outsourcing Oct 15, 2010Currently, I have a FT job w/a very large hospital, actually multiple hospitals combined. We all once worked in the office; however, they sent us all home to work. There have been so, so many changes - everything from new management, VR, pay for production.....Communication amongst co-workers has disappeared. Management doesn't respond. I'm really wond ...
Ever Wonder What Clients Would Think About Doing Their Own Outsourcing? Oct 26, 2010Just thinking out loud here. I know many practices probably do their own outsourcing to MTs at home. Why not more? It must be cheaper for them with higher quality work, personalized service, etc. Some hospitals even hire MTs to work from home rather than use an MTSO.
How can we, as the MT community, reach more clients/practices. Surely they have a liason in the office who handles the direction of their transcribed reports, in-house editing; someone who could do ...

Coding Outsourcing Sep 30, 2012MTs come here for opinions on whether coding will go the way of transcription. Many coders give their opinion. Many feel safe, some don’t know, and many see many opportunities within the field to move about and are not worried. There you have it. Why argue? The MTs argue that the coders are wrong and try to show that it will happen and is happening. We gave our opinion, we know how we feel, and we are IN the field. Are you trying to war ...
