Thinking of applying with Nuance - rendav
Posted: Jan 30, 2015
I am considering applying for a job with Nuance. I have 15+ years experience. I am very hesistant based on comments in this forum. Any advice?

Our pay is constantly decreased and barely make minimum wage with Nuance. Good luck to you but several of us are quitting.
Thinking of applying to Nuance - Think again!

I applied at Nuance and decided not to take the position because of the bad things I have read on this board and told the recruiter that as well, which obviously went ignored. Nuance and M*Modal are the two worst companies you can work for and believe what you read and as stated in the other post, no money. You would be wise to look elsewhere for another company or another line of work!
The only advice really I have is .. sm - anon

really think about this and make sure this is the THE BEST decision you could make. Other places are as low paying as Nuance with the same platform(s), but they don't have the ridiculous smoke and mirrors, pie charts and graphs to explain their pay or to explain why when you type 600 lines, before they pay you they cut those lines in half and then pay you for half the lines, all the while reassuring you that you are getting paid for all the lines, which I still question.
Bottom line to me is, if a company has to have a 30 minute seminar to explain how pay is calculated, something is wrong. It should be you are getting X cpl for typing and X cpl editing a draft. How hard is that??
I know there are people that are happy with the new pay, so if you truly think this is the best company and the best pay you can get, then you should apply, otherwise, you can make the same money or better elsewhere without all the subterfuge and headaches.
Just my opinion though.
My Opinion - Meh

Personally, I'm not any umore dissatisfied with the new pay rule game (I call it a game because MTs can make more or less depending on their performance on meeting 3 criteria). I wasn't making 4 cents/line for editing like some of you at Nuance were but only 3.75/line for editing. Hence, now I have an opportunity to make a bitty more at 8 and 4 instead of 7.5 and 3.75. The first wee, however, my pay did drop to 7 and 3.5, but this week I had 8 and 4. But yes, the rate is still too low. And yes, they proably made up this new pay rule so overall, they don't have to pay so much. In regards to whether or not to work specifically at Nuance, I never understand why the targeted criticisms towards Nuance especially. I mean, don't all MT companies thse days pay a pittance? The pay is so low no matter where you work as an MT, I think. Maybe the blame is mainly on Nuance because they started the problem in the first place by all their outsourcing, and so now all companies pay the same dirt-low rates. But my opinion is if one is going to reenter the MT field anyway, go ahead with Nuance and expect to make anywhere as full-time from $1,100 to $1,5000/month direct deposit in bank. But I think it's the same with all companies that hire MTs. I personally think the pay is a joke too, but like I said, I think it's probably the same low rate everywhere, and with Nuance, I like the platform EditScript and it's easy to jump from one place in the document to another and edit quickly using the shortcut keys.

The pay is not the issue for me as 7 cpl for straight type and 3.5 for editing is the minimum on their pay scale and appears to be about the going rate nowadays. You do have the potential to make more if you can meet other criteria. The issue for me is the inconsistency of the management and the work flow. Too many out of work situations, with no response from managers. Assigned work constantly changing. Managers themselves constantly changing and conflicting with each other, i.e. TAT 4 hours, 6 hours, 8 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours, going back and forth. How do you meet TAT if it is constantly changing. QA/QC is also very inconsistent. Being an MT should be a low stress job and Nuance does not make it that way. Think they need to take some management courses.
Have to agree with above post...INCONSISTENT AND CONFUSING - QA/QC, management, TAT, pay
[ In Reply To ..]
Just when I begin to think, "this might be okay." Bam...confusing and inconsistent feedback. First my Fiesa score was inconsistent, nitpicking for minor and style issues. Imagine style issues cutting your pay drastically. Then it settled down to 100%..YES. Now my feedback in the platform, whereas it had ALWAYS been 100%, now I am getting marked down for them filling in blanks and nitpicking style issues. like QA in platform is trying to impress or please someone higher up (probably to keep THEIR job). Pay is good right NOW but could change drastically with ONE bad Fiesa audit. TAT is all over the place. And imagine holding your breath to check work e-mails or Fiesa audit scores. Constant classes and hoops to jump through and they want you to do it while on time clock. Yah. On and on. Am stuffing money into savings as fast as I can because you just never know what tomorrow might bring!

For me, the pay is the only problem with Nuance. But like you said, the rate seems to be the going rate nowadays no matter where you work as MT. I personally, however, don't get OOW (out of work) very often at all, and my current TSM is very helpful and answers just about every one of my emails and fairly promptly. Also, it's seldom that I need to argue about the mistakes in FIESA. Plus, they don't mark down the score for leaving several blanks, especially if the dictator is impossible to decipher. I see in FIESA I've left blanks in several reports that were filled in by QA and I still get 100%, so I personally don't agree with all the QA gripes. But yes, the pay is really ridiculous. Do you have any change? Please, I'm hungry, I have a dog to feed.
Kind of supports what was posted - inconsistency - anon1

Which manager you work for should not make that much of a difference within a company when you are all doing essentially the same work.

There are thousands of MLSs at Nuance. What'd I'd suggest is to give it a try for yourself and not to rely on the comments here.

sm is right -- only a teeny/tiny fraction of Nuance MTs haunt this board. The new pay scale is great, at least for me -- making much more. You can always quit if you don't like it or don't do well

I actually applied without reading the comments... - Ex-Nuance newbie

....and I wish I'd read the comments first. I only wanted a bit of money, part time...but the communication was non-existent. Then they pulled a few fast ones on my pay (not paying my training pay when it was supposed to be, not keeping their end of the bargain when it came to the offer letter as far as pay). My TSM? Could never reach her. They lied about which software I needed and I had to buy software on the spot with the IT guy on the phone or "no job"....then it turned out what I had was fine. Basically, everything on here was absolutely true. I'm a transcriptionist with almost 15 years experience, and I've never seen anything like it.
I literally lasted 10 days.
I went back to my old part time job and couldn't be happier.
Good luck with what you choose though.

Everyone has a different perspective and/or different experience. I have a great primary account and a pretty good secondary account. I love my hours, and so far the pay scale has been a bit unnerving but has worked in my favor. You never know until you try.
Content? - that is weak tea
[ In Reply To ..]
I kind of agree with you, in that I also am content, but sometimes I think this board would make more sense if all the other intangibles that make up our lifestyles were required to be divulged before anyone gives advice to anyone.
Let's face it, if you really need to make a good living there is no job in MT that will do that anymore, except maybe a managerial one. I actually made $60,000 just about 5-6 years ago, would have made more had I not paid $300/week for insurance (I could afford it then, now I don't even make that much sometimes). Not 20 years ago, 5-6 years ago.
The thing is, the MTSOs still charge the same to the hospitals, they just take all the money for themselves and pay us as little as possible now even though we do the work, with creative accounting in the form of such as this convoluted payment plan. I am one of the odd few people making more this week (next week I could drop $200-300 with one misplaced comma, how fair is that? I see "contentment" disappearing rapidly if you get zapped with that) and I say big deal.
I know from bitter experience their control over our paychecks is total and if they decide to dock you you are docked, no fairness, no recourse. They want you to think it is your fault, it is not, so don't guilt yourself out.
It would really be more honest of them just to pay everyone the lower pay, get rid of FIESA, and pay true bonuses if they want to, not make it a negative thing like they have. It's sick.
What gets me mad (not saying that you fall in this category, but I can't tell, you see) is people who say they are content and okay with the constant nickle and diming as long as they can hang on and do okay.
Again, I think you have to be aware when looking to these boards for advice that some people really don't even need an income, some people do NOT need benefits, they rely on DH's benefits. The health insurance coverage by Nuance is abysmal, just terrible, and it is only because the grandfather clause of the ACA allowed them to get away with offering the same junky policies as before. With our now horrible salaries, many of us can probably apply and get Obamacare but it seems to be a convoluted process to prove we make so little and that the insurance is not enough, probably only possible after you have a big health bill you can't pay. So there's the stress of that and there's the time no one has to figure it out if we are waiting in front of our keyboards 16 hours a day to make up for the work that was not there during our shifts.
If you just go by making the 7/3.5 cpl and ignore all the other garbage, if you can live on that the other parts of Nuance are actually good. Every platform is different, but on mine the demographics are in it, which is a huge timesaver, so you just type. My primary account is good and familiar.
The overstaffing at certain times is extremely frustrating. The fact that overtime is offered at the drop of a hat (usually at night, with nothing left if you are scheduled in the morning, so good news if you are a night person, I unfortunately am not one) because their version of "overtime" does not cost them much at all, some convoluted again equation whereby they pay you half of your hourly PTO rate (i.e. say $10 is your rate, they pay you an extra $5/hr based only on the time you put in for overtime plus the lph but NOT lph x1.5 at all, just regular lph, so no skin off their nose really).
I do go on, but let me tell you last year I only made $25,000. To me this is bad working a full time job.
Despite liking the work at Nuance, the way they treat MTs and the transparent way they go about cutting our pay and trying to make us feel it is our fault is really beyond compare. They are truly evil.
For sanity, I am now trying to go part time and get another job, in the hopes that the other job might be better and eventually I can get out of the Nuance pit. To me this helps me psychologically by not feeling I am at the mercy of Nuance, since they victimize MTs every chance they can get.
Pay attention to reviews - JavaMom
[ In Reply To ..]
I was hired recently, decided to leave after 3-1/2 wks. Workflow very inconsistent, only worked half my scheduled hours, convoluted pay structure, little to no communication from supervisor. After trying for 3 weeks, I started looking up reviews and found they were very accurate to my reality. After working very happily for 9 years previously for another company (which closed), I could see the writing on the wall that Nuance wouldn't work for me. Maybe the earning potential would have been there eventually, but I didn't have the luxury to wait and see. Overall, it was a very frustrating experience. The recruiters make it sound like it will be rainbows and lollipops and great pay - reality was much different, at least in my experience. Good luck with your decision!
Why I gave it a try - I regret it most of the time

I started working for a company that before I even interviewed, swore, without my asking them mind you, that they would never sell out to anyone.
Well, they were already in the process of being sold to MModal. One month after I started, got an email, AN EMAIL, that I now worked for MModal AS OF THE DAY BEFORE.
Well at least Nuance is up front about companies they'd taken over I figured. Yeah, that they are. However, the transparency ends about there.
I figured I'd rather work for them than get taken over again like that. Having worked for both, I think they are the better of the 2 but they are similar and working anywhere else you run the risk of being taken over by one or the other anyway.
Having said all that. I'm still ready to jump ship any time now just for a break if nothing else. I'm really wishing to somehow just get out of this whole stupid line of work. Can't even call it a career anymore.
Nuance - Disgusted

Don't apply. I just left there as I made very little money. They over hire thinking they are getting these big accounts, they are not set up so we sit and wait for work while they work out the kinks and after three months I was disgusted and left. I am glad to do so too. I am content where I am now and have no problem with getting work. I have several friends who have been at Nuance and are now gone. DO NOT MAKE THAT MISTAKE.
Hi,
I just found out that a hospital in our "family" of hospitals just let go 60 MTs over the weekend because it was "better for their patients" and see the writing on the wall for the hospital that I work for. A little while back, I received an email from Nuance inviting me to apply.

I would be working on the clinic side from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. EST Sun-Thurs and now I'm wondering if I'll be wasting my time since it seems like there won't be any work. Okay, this is somewhat of a strange situation. I have been looking for a job in the field that I was in prior to becoming an MT 11 years ago, which would be a full-time position with benefits. Currently I am IC. I had lost my previous job due to downsizing and the office/company that I worked for basically closed it's Wisconsin branch except for a handful of employees. I just found out that one of the employees at this small Wisconsin branch of the company that I use ...
