Am I understanding correctly from a previous post that if we have insurance with Nuance we are inelligible to go on the exchange site to get private health care? This policy with no co-pays makes it impossible to afford to go to a doctor's office. I feel I'm paying for a policy I really can't use.

Each situation is different - everyone here keeps trying to compare apples and oranges and you cannot. You have to do the research - go to the federal website for obamacare or your state exchange site and find out what it will cost you. You cannot go by other people's experiences because the only thing that may match is that you both work for Nuance - otherwise, each situation is different.

When I went to the federal website, one of the first questions was whether we had employer-provided health insurance (I do through my husband), so I was basically done on the website. I did go back in later to figure out what it would cost us if we were to retire today using our projected retirement income and found that it would be excruciatingly expensive for a bare bones plan - but that's just my experience. Your's would be different.

My cost of insurance through the exchange would have been $260/month (married, age 55) for the "silver" plan. My husband (age 54) is self-employed. His coverage would be $480/month but qualifies for a subsidy of $220 because he is self employed and his would also be $260/month. Still too much.

Thank you everyone for your comments on this. I heard of someone getting a plan with Humana for $181 monthly with copays. Not having copays is killing me! Don't think I'll try the exchanges since it sounds it could be a lot worse!

You can see if your state is one that expanded medicaid coverage to include your income.

Also, found this in regard to qualifying :
In general, employees who are offered insurance through work are not eligible for subsidized exchange coverage, so long as their insurance meets specified requirements. You would only be eligible for subsidized exchange coverage if your income is between 1 and 4 times the federal poverty level and you would have to pay more than 9.5% of your household income for your own coverage through the insurance offered by your employer.

cost sharing or tax credits as the other comment indicated unless your premium is more than 9.5% of your income, etc. It might be worth it to check it out just so you know. Different states have different plans; also it is affected significantly by your age. Ex - my daughter can get a good plan for around 250 a month; my husband's would be I think 750 for the same plan.

I took the high deductible Nuance plan after I compared the total out of pocket cost for us with the two plans. Gambling we don't need it, and getting more in my paycheck. I figured if I had to pay $5000.00 (2500 ea spouse and I) deductible on the PPO, it was not much more for us to pay $2500 for the 7500 deductible on the high deductible, with the premium savings per month going in my pocket equaling more than that. Don't know if that makes any sense, but basically we are paying to get the contracted rates anyway. :(

With this new healthcare reform, does this mean that outsourcing companies are going to have to provide health insurance to MTs? This is my first VR job. I cannot make enough lines to qualify for health insurance on it. This is the first time I have ever had this problem. I just recently got MQ health insurance. I was wondering how it works since it is just a HSA and not a PPO or HMO. Please correct me if I am wrong, but from what I have heard this insurance plan (BC/BS?) does not cover primary care office visits until you reach a 2500 dollar deductible, no copay anymore, paying for the whole visit??
