Does anyone think the Nuance line count is fishy? - sm

Posted: May 24, 2012

I think the lines are padded.  After typing all day at break neck speed, I am shocked at the end of the day how low my line count is.  I work for another company doing the same thing, just as fast, and I get double the lines.  Well, we will never know because at Nuance we can't copy the report and paste it into Word to get a line count because it is blocked, I think they do that on purpose and that way we can't check our lines to see if it is accurate, which I know it isn't.  So, we have no way of knowing how accurate Escriptoin line counts are, do we?  Really, can't Nuance even be honest about that considering how little they pay as it is!

Absolutely not! Mine is always accurate.

Because my line count correlates with what I get paid.
Huh? OP, hire a kid from the computer store to fix - your copy problem. My son is
[ In Reply To ..]
my "kid." I haven't seen a problem yet on my accounts. At another large company a number of us came to realize the line counts had to be "massaged" down, so it does happen. Some kept careful counts and KNEW long before I did. I was sloppy in my hours worked and didn't count LPH, so it took months of declining possible earnings, no matter what I did and without an official cause to explain it, to wake me up.

In any case, fix your monitoring problem and start keeping your own counts.
Duh-I am sure it correlates, I am saying the line count is right in the first place. - nm

If you think you did 15,000 lines - that's what you are going to get paid for !! - nuancemt

What the poster is saying is HOW DO WE KNOW what the exact line count is???? Just because you do ALT-X and SEE a line count does NOT mean it is accurate. duh.
Let me clear up what I am talking about.... - see message

On escription, you can see how many lines you have done in a session. I am saying that I think those lines aren't correct. But, you can't check it because you can't copy the report into Word to count the lines from Word to compare. I know that you get paid for whatever lines Escription says you did, and, thus, that would correlate with your pay, but I don't think those lines in Escription are correct. Since we can't copy out of Escription, we can't check to see if the lines Escription says we did are actually counted correctly. So, if Escription says we did 1500 lines for a day, we have to take their word for it cause there is no way to know otherwise. Does that make more sense?
You hit it on the nose!! - nuancemt

Exactly right. We can only go by what we are told. I work Escription. No way for me to copy into Word to check my line count. I'll bet you there is a lot of trimming going on here. I've been a MT for 30 years. My arms get to aching after a full day. I know how many lines I did before this job and comparing to Nunace, I'm getting screwed in line counts.
My point exactly! Like I said, I type for another company and do twice that, same speed, same every - doubtful

You CAN copy -- - AFTER (sm)
[ In Reply To ..]
... you're done and uploaded, just pull that job back up, block and copy and then check it. Plus remember, accounts are different. The way the lines are counted on each hospital may be set to a different calculation, so if it's not calculating the way you think, it's probably right, just not as lucrative for you as the other. I know some of us type on some that are still very well in our favor and some not so much. You just have to ask how it should be being calculated, then double check it yourself. If it's incorrect, then say something. Hope that helps
SM-Thank you! This totally answers my question, but I still think we are getting cheated! - doubtful

Class Action Lawsuits - signalfire
[ In Reply To ..]
For the newbies out there, there have been class action lawsuits, executives have gone to jail over this issue. A penny less a page times a couple 100 or 1000 MTs times several years is a LOT of money. The old Medquist (whatever the bloody 'ell they were called back then) was sued over line count differentials and after all was said and done, the lawyers made a ton of money, the initial complainants probably did pretty well, but all I got was a 'certificate' for CMEs. Lol and Grrrrr.

The internet is your friend, ladies. It's like an electronic form of telepathy and allows a very powerful form of communication between otherwise alone and powerless employees. Maybe a virtual strike needs to be arranged amongst the people who are being taken advantage of so that the mucky-mucks can get 500K paydays. They need YOU a lot more than you need them.

Nuance about our line counts, but there is no way to check them cause we can't copy and paste into another program like Word to count lines, so we have to take their (Nuance and Escription) word for it. SO, if we can't prove it, we can't challenge it. Does anyone have any suggestion about this?
There is a long hard way - SM - nuancehaha

So there is a way, but you have to make a determination if it is worth your time and a little extra effort. What you can do is actually type the report into Word manually (old fashioned I know) the next time you get a non speec-rec job. Then when it is done copy/paste the job into Escription (you can paste INTO escription just not copy from it). Then you can compare the two jobs side by side.

Also to one of the posters who said it varies from hospital to hospital... the way they BILL the hospital varies from hospital to hospital, but the way they PAY us is by a 65 character line including all characters. They are not legally allowed to deviate from this (without notification and consent) as it is in our offer letters and contracts that we signed to be hired. As an aside, it is common for them to pay on a 65 char line and bill on a 55 char or 58 char line, or even better for the MTSO "gross line" (which is how many lines of text are visible on the page).

Just wanted to give you a "so ya know" from Alaska.
Well, thanks to Nuancehaha, I was right- we are getting cheated on lines. - doubtful

I typed a report in Word and then copy and pasted it into Escription. Word counted 35 lines for report (yes, I used characters with spaces divided by 65), and Escription gave me 24 lines, hence, a 12 line difference on a 2 minute report. That adds up to a lot over 8 hours, just as I thought. Time to get a new job or go FT with the other typing job where I am making a real paycheck. Such crooks these people are and we are only trying to make a living-I hate them!

P.S. Yes, I will be writing a letter upon resignation to HR about this too!
Hold on a second - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I just did the same thing you did and used characters with spaces/65 and I came out 1 line over on EditScript (I am on the EditScript platform) than it counted in Word. Perhaps the difference is with Escription, although I am not entirely sure what that platform is...

Good luck.
EditScript is the part of eScription we work on. - Thanks. The facts and nothing but the facts. :)

Document it on several reports, then talk to the lawyers! If you have documented proof, on a good sampling of reports over several days, that should stand up in court.

Figure out what to do, get it right, contact the lawyers, get it fixed before the rest of us have to go on Escription and get screwed over too!

Fishy (not About Nuance)
Apr 16, 2013

This isn't about Nuance, but as this seems to be the most frequented forum, I thought I would post here. This morning I applied for a transcription position with a cover letter and resume.  The recruiter wrote me back about an hour later explaining the line rate and providing the link to take their test.  I wasn't too thrilled about the pay but went ahead and took the test.  It was the easiest test I've ever taken, comprised mostly of spelling and grammar with a fe ...

What Happens At Nuance If You Are Part-time And Cannot Always Make Line Count?

I can do it most of the time, but every now and then I miss it, sometimes by as much as 20 lines per hour. I have had 1 email asking that I use my time more productively and make the line count. I actually do use my time as productively as I can. I admit, although I have done this for years, I am not great with VR editing. Also, with the high standards and deductions in FIESA, I really listen and listen again to much of my transcription so I don't fall below wanted numbers there. I am doing ...

VR Line Count - What Kind Of Line Production Should I Shoot For
Mar 24, 2011

I was just hired on with a company to do strictly VR. I am only going to be working part time so about 4 hours a day. I have read that most who are working full time or 8 hours a day are doing more than 1,000, even 2,000 a day. The company I will be working for wants a minimum of 10,000 lines in a payperiod which the lady said even with part time ...

Character Count/line Count
