Accentus practicum - Shannon

Posted: Dec 16, 2014

I just got accepted to accentus for my practicum. I am hoping its not a nightmare like I have read on here.

What is that? I remember Accentus the company, but - SM

They were bought out by Nuance. Are you an MT student?

yea they are accentus by nuance - shannon

Hi, yea I am a student at Canscribe. I guess they were bought by nuance. Have you had experience with either?

No, never worked for Nuance - but..

[ In Reply To ..]
Accentus was once a good company before they became Nuance. Now there are a lot of changes and some very unhappy people. I have been an MT since 2001 and started in the hospital setting. Unfortunately, those jobs are scarce and whats left of them are being outsourced left and right. What made you decide to become an MT?
i have anxiety - shannon
[ In Reply To ..]
I have severe agoraphobia so I wanted something I could do from home. I have done other things like CSR work..im hoping this wasnt a waste of money
Well you might end up - working for..
[ In Reply To ..]
Nuance for a while because they do hire new grads, but they have made some unsavory changes recently and their MTs are pretty unhappy (read their board to the left). I suppose you gotta do what you gotta do to get experience so if you have to work for them to get that then so be it; however, the money wont come easy since you will have to learn before you're able to increase your production and these jobs don't pay hourly during the learning phase (Nuance might, not sure).

You could always start off part-time and look into another customer service job to help make ends meet while you build on your productivity.

I do understand your need to work from home. I don't necessarily have a medical need that requires me to work from home, but right now it happens to be where I'm at and at the moment its for the best.
Your money would have been better spent on therapy sm - acuteMLS

for the agoraphobia. I must be dense, why would you cater to a phobia by finding ways not to go out of the house? You will never get better this way.
Well... - see msg

It is imperative you get help from a good psychologist. (Not a psychiatrist--they are more about medication management). A psychologist can't prescribe meds, but he or she would likely be happy to speak to your PCP so they have a basic idea of what is needed in the way of a med.

Please don't get to the point where you can't even go out to get your mail. It can happen, if it hasn't already.

Anyway, to get to your MT situation, MT won't help your anxiety in any way, shape or form. Most MTSOs pay by the line, and it's really bad pay. They hound you to the point of pulling your hair out, in terms of production and quality.
Forgive me for saying this, but . . . - Mary

Your response to the OP was rather unkind.
It was blunt, but not - unkind...
[ In Reply To ..]
that was my first thought when I read this. Why would anyone try to structure their working life to avoid recovery from a potentially debilitating mental illness, especially MT, which at this point is probably not a good choice for anyone? Better to get professional help and pursue a decent job which will ultimately cause less anxiety.
I get it - shannon

I understand what you guys are saying. I have tried to work outside of the house for most of my adult life. I have managed to keep a job for a month or so before I get overwhelmed and crash. Nevertheless, this was not a post where I was looking for therapy or suggestions for how to treat anxiety. I was merely asking if anyone had experience with them.
Well - Good Luck
[ In Reply To ..]
Well, good luck. Anything MT is bad is all I can say, then.
then why are you doing it? - shannon
[ In Reply To ..]
If it is so horribly why are you here?
The reason I'm still here - is
[ In Reply To ..]
I have done this for 30 years and still can eke out a reasonable no frills living even with a pay scale that has been going in reverse for about the last 10 years. I am crossing my fingers that this job will even exist for another 4 years until I can collect full Social Security benefits and be done with it once and for all.
If the OP was looking for reasons why she - should avoid MT...SM
[ In Reply To ..]
she would just read the boards. She did not ask for advice regarding psychotherapy or reasons why she should have chose a different path. She asked if anyone here had experience with Nuance/Accentus.
thank you - shannon

Thank you for saying that. Anyways doesn't matter now because they withdrew me from practicum because I wanted to wait till after Christmas to start.
You will be overwhelmed and crashing every day working at Nuance sm - acuteMLS

Most of us left there are thick-skinned old birds who can take a punch or two, but at this point the company has beaten the hell out of us and we're all looking for other work.

Which is worse, getting therapy AND working outside the home, or working for Nuance at home with your TSM calling and emailing you about why you aren't typing fast enough, why the work isn't good enough quality, and where were you for 5 minutes during your shift.

My advice is to try to get your practicum sm - Ben Tover

somewhere else. While I liked the people at Accentus and the account I was on, I still feel rather misled that within literally a few weeks after hiring me they sold out to Nuance and not long after I was forced to become an employee. I have been doing this 20-plus years and I made more money straight out of school than I make now. I have watched the industry fade. If you can find something other than MT, that would be good too. I wouldn't say what you spent on the course was a complete waste of money. You can transcribe and there are other kinds of transcription. You also presumably know medical terminology. These are two very useful skills.

Good luck to you in finding what it is you need.

thank you so much - shannon

Thanks for replying. Yes I do think t will be beneficial either way. I learned a few knew skills and there are job openings in hospitals and clinics here where I can make more per hour than I have ever made in the past. Its just a matter of getting experience. But I might avoid accentus. I am sure there are other places I can do work from home.

Should I Be Worrying So Much Or Do I Need To Work Harder? Re: Practicum
Aug 11, 2012

I am so glad I found a place to ask this question and hopefully get some feedback from experienced MTs. Any input or advice is welcome and appreciated. I finally commenced my practicum on Wednesday and I have completed 5 transcriptions so far (I work p/t so have been fitting them in around those hours).  The average score I have been getting back has been in the low 90's percentage-wise. Is this something to be concerned about? I know the industry standard is 98% and I do tend to ...

LPH At Accentus
May 04, 2012

Hi.  I haven't been working for Accentus very long, but long enough that I should be meeting the 200 lph requirement for SR, but I'm still really struggling to do it.  I was wondering if anyone else had that experience or if maybe I am entering my time incorrectly or something.  I consistently average 165 lph for straight transcription so I feel like 200 is something I shouldn't be struggling so hard to meet, but I am.  I love Accentus so far so I don't wa ...

ACCENTUS/TRANSOLUTIONS
Mar 20, 2012

Medical Transcription just keeps going downhill.  They expect more and pay less.  I work for Accentus now and actually love my account and got my pay up to 5 cents for SR and 9 cents for transcription, but I have to work 10 hours a day just to make ends meet.  They pay based on how many lines you type per hour so it can change every pay period.  It's better than what I had at Transcend.  The only thing is that my supervisor is a narcissist, very mean, tears you down ...
