Does Rasmussen College have a good reputation in the medical transcription job world??? - katiekamrad

Hi everyone,

I just graduated from Rasmussen online college with a 2 year degree in medical transcription back in September. I was able to land a brief 2 month job in November but the lady that hired me wasn't a patient trainer and let me go because I wasn't perfect right away and she was very busy as well, backed up in fact.

My question is, does Rasmussen College have a good reputation in the medical transcription world?

before reading your previous comments, I had never heard of Rasmussen College in any context in the 10 years or so that I have been participating in MT boards.

Others may have heard of it and would therefore be able to provide an informed assessment.

From my personal experience, I found job placement through them 14 months after graduation and that was by luck. They stumbled into a company looking to hire several people experienced or not and it was enough to get my foot in the door and a year of experience before moving up and into a better position. In fact, the campus that I graduated from stopped offering the medical transcription program because of inability to place students in jobs. Of the individuals who graduated from the program with me from what I have heard, I am the only one left actively working as a medical transcriptionist. I learned way more on the job than I ever did from the program. I found out after I signed up and spent the money that the teachers were RNs with master degrees and had zero experience in medical transcription. This is just my experience with them. It has been several years since I graduated and a lot of things could have changed since then. I wish you the best.

ANY course that does not use the SUM program will not prepare you adequately.

It is the transcription practice that you receive at your school. My school you complete a minimum of 2425 (810 reports) minutes of dictation and have the option of another 1000 (300+ reports) minutes of dictation with the SUM program.

I miss the lively atmosphere of a transcription room filled with other transcriptionists, with doctors strolling in and out, joking, grabbing from the tray of homemade goodies someone had brought in to share. So I was at a local clinic today that had switched over to a dropdown menu system and templates for their doctors a couple years ago and had laid off their transcriptionists and the doctor was just typing away in his template and of course I had to mention how as a medical transcriptionist this really bothered me. He told me that many of the doctors there were unhappy with the new system and had gone back to dictating and that they were more than likely going to be hiring transcriptionists ...

I have an opportunity to do so but there aren't any scribes currently in my area and I don't know anyone who has worked as a scribe before. I recently got a new computer & have had quite a time getting all my transcription software transferred over; the only thing I am unable to transfer is my medical spellcheck. I have used Stedmann's for sometime now but went on their site and it is $100 to purchase it.
