I'm pretty sure that if everyone just works hard and keeps their powder dry, the working conditions will eventually get better. Someone, somewhere, in the upper ranks is probably working right now to improve the working conditions of the MT. I'm not holding my breath for that to happen though. I would love to be surprised for the sake of all my MT friends. If the conditions improved 100%, I wouldn't go back. I love medical coding more than I ever enjoyed MT, and I enjoyed it a lot at one time.

That's the kind of thinking and "pep talk" that - paved the way for the demise of MT.

We all know that there is nobody in the upper ranks looking out for MTs. That was not meant to be taken seriously.

I don't know what the 'average' MT makes. I do know what I make. On the other hand, the average CCS-credentialed coder makes $60,919 according to their professional organization. Not much typing, but some. Paid hourly, not by the line. Doing the math, if you spend a year getting really good training, get the CCS, and start at what I understand is somewhere around close to $20/hour, how long would it make to get a good return on investment. That is something to consider. That first year even looks good from here. Thinking about it another way, the status quo, one year doing just what we are doing, the next year looks pretty sad. The joke is really on us if we keep doing what we are doing and expecting a different result or someone to rescue us. I hope I don't make anyone angry. I'm just thinking out loud for my own benefit.

I have an odd question. If a US trained Medical Transcriptionist works from home (in the U.S.), but then decides to spend 1/2 the year (or more) in a foreign country, is it possible (ethical/legal) to continue working as an MT while in that country? I know I am not the only one working 2 jobs or more. Between them I am scheduled 68 hours per week.
