Leap of Faith - After years of worrying and struggling - nm
Posted: Nov 23, 2010
After years of worrying and struggling to make ends meet working here and part time at a 24 hour store, I've decided to take my daughter's advice and move. I applied for jobs in San Antonio and found an actual transcription job IN A HOSPITAL! I'll be making a better than decent salary and will be getting actual benefits!
I'll be moving in with my daughter and her BF for a while, but we'll be house hunting soon as my place is sold. I will also have the time now to learn how to do something new, because this industry isn't all that secure. Maybe teaching??? Maybe business? Who knows! Right now I'm glad to be saying that next year is already looking better!
I feel so renewed! No more Q for me. Happy Holidays to you all and thank you all for all the help, for listening to me rant, for supporting me through my hard times. I will check in now and again to say hello.
Farewell for now!

Would you e-mail me with the hospital name? Or at least say which side (north, south, etc) of San Antonio it is on?

in places I hated, but having a good job, now I live in a place I simply ADORE, but there's no work around here, and I'm stuck working at home for a low-paying national. I'm starting to look at the third option, which is the long, long COMMUTE.

Losing Faith In Humanity Mar 12, 2014I have seen so much written about MModal over the few years I have been a member of this board. About how it has "burnt transcription to the ground", how little they pay, how you never have work, your accounts are always empty, you are treated with disrespect. Then they throw you a bread crumb, and you trample each other to get it. It would seem like to me that now would be the time to say "NO, you will tell us the pay before we test. You will tell us the terms of the pos ...
Worrying Imbalance Dec 04, 2009Can anyone help? This school is going to be the death of me. Transcribing Neurological H&P. Under Assessment/Plan, "This is a patient with worrying imbalance. She did have a normal imaging before, but I did not get an MRI." I can't find "worrying imbalance" anywhere! This report speaks of a 54 year-old-woman who "complains of swaying when she is standing or even sitting for long periods." It had sounded to me as if the Dr. had said whirling imba ...
Do You Spend 80% Of Your Life Worrying About Your Bad Job Jun 13, 2015It just seems to me that many MTs spend the majority of their lives worrying about the next bad thing that their employer is going to do to them.
No solution. It just occurred to me that a lot of lives are gettng wasted hour by hour because of employer abuse or perceived employer abuse. Your choice. ...
Should I Be Worrying So Much Or Do I Need To Work Harder? Re: Practicum Aug 11, 2012I am so glad I found a place to ask this question and hopefully get some feedback from experienced MTs. Any input or advice is welcome and appreciated.
I finally commenced my practicum on Wednesday and I have completed 5 transcriptions so far (I work p/t so have been fitting them in around those hours). The average score I have been getting back has been in the low 90's percentage-wise. Is this something to be concerned about? I know the industry standard is 98% and I do tend to ...
I Am A LONG Time Medquist'er About To Take A Leap Dec 05, 2011I've been with Medquist forEVER but I've been consistently losing income for the past 3 years. Last month, I was forced to go on governmental assistance just to keep a roof over my and my son's heads because of my lack of income with Medquist. This year I may just barely make $10,000. I have been with this company through thick and thin. I have seen thousands of changes, and been through several dozen supervisors. I am a WAY dedicated employee, p ...
Why Bad EMRs Are Forced On Physicians By Edwin Leap, MD Aug 11, 2014from KevinMD website
"I recently did a tally. Since starting my locums adventure last year, and going to full-time locums in January, I’ve worked in a grand total of 11 emergency departments. Let me qualify that for the occasional visitor to my blog. I decided to do this for purposes of flexibility, finances and a much needed change of scenery. Not because I’m a problem physician, or unable to do the work in a “real” job. I say that to ...
After Years And Years Of Being IC, Obtained Employee Status At A Co. Sm Nov 26, 2012Thought that after not having enough work for a couple years now and always chasing work, I'd now have a "real job" as an employee and wouldn't have to worry about a steady paycheck and paying the bills anymore.
The reason I thought this was because at the interview and in their professional company emails, they use all the "real job" words: Shift, scheduled hours, overtime, PTO, benefits, etc. I felt relieved to finally have a "job."
What a big bunch of BS! I was "hired" ...
3 Years. Question: How Many More Years Do You Plan To Be An MT/editor? Dec 20, 2013There is much speculation about the field of transcription - how many of us actually plan to be here 5 years, 10 years, 20 years from now. I realize that the field is going to change, which will contribute to your answer. Will there be enough transcriptionists/editors to fill the need in 5 years and in 10 years? Will the industry be forced out of offshoring because of taxes? Will there be a need even for editors if VR gets better? These are all unanswered questions, but my question is, what ...

Just For My Struggling MTs At The Q Mar 11, 2010I found this on the AOL home page this morning and after this weeks check, felt some of may find this handy.......
Cheapskate that I am, I shop one of two discount chains for staples every couple of weeks. On my latest trip, using off-label brands, I put together the following shopping list and menus. It's no-frills cuisine, and I use that term loosely, to be sure, but that's besides the point. It's a survival diet for someone on a constrained budget. So hold your nose, cruise the ...
Am I The Only One Struggling With My Job? Feb 23, 2012I started with a new company 2 months ago. I've never done speech editing until now. The headers are confusing but I make lots of notes, try every day to do this right. I'll think I've done a good job but the next day, there's my reports showing mistakes. I'll have multiple reports with A's but it only takes 1 or 2 C reports to bring down my average. I'm not new at this, 30 years experience but I'm having second thoughts about ...
New MT, Struggling Aug 06, 2013I'm a recently graduated MT. I started working almost as soon as I graduated. I decided to work from home for pretty much the same reasons as everyone else. But I also, unfortunately, have a problem when it comes to interacting with people, whether it be customers or coworkers. I have a tendency to say the wrong thing, even though I don't mean how it comes out. I'm very introverted and have a lot of social anxiety, so this exacerbates the problem. I thought all of this could be re ...

Still Struggling With Required LPH. Sm Dec 09, 2013Have been on E5 for a year and unable maintain 186 lph. This is the first time in my 20+ years as an MT that it has been so hard to reach the required lines. Today I forced myself to sit in the chair and moved only to go to the bathroom a couple times, and a 1-minute stretch every hour (timed). Still only managed about 170 lph. The audio is pretty bad on my accounts, but still never had a problem with lines with poor audio at prior jobs. I do tend to double-listen now when there is a hitch in th ...
Struggling Newbie Dec 26, 2013Hey all. I just started at Nuance on 11/18, straight outta school, although I'd done MT before getting formal instruction :( ANYWAY...I like working for this company, and I have 90 days to get my skill set up to snuff. I've made progress, %-wise, like 98.37% but am still making dumb errors and getting not-good reviews. Does anybody that's been doing MT for a while remember struggling in the beginning? I'd love to hear a story about triumph over ad ...
Why Does It Feel If You're Struggling With LPH Jun 27, 2014As posted in a previous thread, due to over hiring, the rules for QCs have been changed and we are being closely monitored to be sure we have our LPH at the right level. Why does it seem that, if you are struggling with that and doing all you can just to keep above the cutting point, that all of a sudden your email is FULL of Fiesa errors? I HATE Fiesa with a passion. I see those emails and just want to throw my hands up and quit. I am already on edge with worrying ...

MTSO's - Most Of You Are Struggling And You Don't Know Why. Dec 13, 2014There are three areas where many MTSO's run off the track:
1. Poor recruiting, hiring and training practices.
2. Poor supervision, from poor selection of supervisors to lack of training for new supervisors to failure to supervise your supervisors.
3. Inadequate compensation. Notice that I didn't say "not having the highest compensation". Between "inadequate" and "the highest" there's a ton of room for ALL of you to improve, but you must AT LEAST co ...

I Worked For M*Modal A Couple Of Years Ago Or So And I Worked For Medquist Several Years Ago. Aug 08, 2014Lately, I've been getting legal notices mailed to my home from I believe the east coast somewhere informing me of a class action lawsuit against M*Modal and inviting me to joint if I have a claim. I don't think I have a claim, but then again with all the shady practices in this business, I'm not so sure. I'm just curious what the heck is going on. Anyone care to give me the lowdown? ...
Struggling To Make Weekly Linecount W/new System Sep 27, 2013My place of business has switched from a very streamlined transcription system to one that is VERY subpar. Process to complete just 1 document is as follows:
1) When a new job comes up to be transcribed I have to first adjust settings and choose clinician, patient and corresponding DOS, type of document/letter, etc. Then I have to work simultaeously with MS Word open - go to my template in Word (cause I had to make ALL NEW templates when we went to this new compa ...
Hoping To Inspire Some Of You That Are Struggling (long Post, Sorry!) Mar 01, 2014Hello all my fellow transcriptionists!
I love this board. I have been coming here and reading most of the messages here for many years now, even though I haven't really been a 'medical' transcriptionist for about 4 or 5 years now. I love all your comments, feel for you when you share your frustrations, and gain insight into the changes that have continued to happen with medical transcription (in particular, with the MTSOs).
I am heartbroken for the many of you that are work ...
Struggling To Make Line Count Every Pay Period Apr 11, 2014I have been here for two years and it seems like I am just struggling to make line count every pay period. I feel like I am walking up a hill in a big wind storm, moving but not really getting anywhere. I work nights and I am getting too tired at night. I know most of this is my fault, but worked as an MT before and did great, no problems what so ever and great pay. Does anyone else feel like this? ...
