Also, the only unemployed that get counted in the state an national averages are those on UE. If you don't apply, then your plight "doesn't exist".

Your premise makes no sense. MM is not going to "feel" anything by you claiming UE. Also, we have no idea how many people were laid off, except to assume it's under 500 people, nationwide. That's not even enough to cause a blip on the national UE roles. No one is going to notice your plight.

Don't get me wrong -- file for UE, it's a right given to you.

It's just silly to expect UE to be some kind of rally cry against big business.

It's called tilting at windmills. I would rather shrug it off - get UE and TAA and get on with life.

Anger is natural but if you don't shake it off, it eats you alive and MM isn't the one who pays.

Take what you can get and get on with your life. Lots of people have to start over and they end up better and happier than they were before, if they decide to be.

Part of the taxes, both federal and state, that an employer pays goes into the unemployment fund and then the states distribute the monies.

If MM, or any company for that matter, would be harmed financially by laying off workers as opposed to keeping them on, they would not lay off the workers. It all comes down to the bottom line.

Filing for unemployment will not harm the company in any way, shape, or form. They've technically already paid for it.

Then why do they put us all thru in order to - get us to quit, rather than fire us?

As long as their bottom line is good, there is no need to get rid of you via layoff. What you have to understand with a company as large as MM, you are just a figure -- a plus or minus on a financial spreadsheet. As long as there's more pluses than minuses, there is no reason to lay people off. Once that balance tips, though, out the door you go!

Also, although I know it seems like they must lay awake at night formulating plans to worsen working conditions, they really don't. They don't make things awful because they're "out to make you quit." They do it because, in the great scheme of things, your working conditions don't matter. There will always be another person in line, either here or overseas, willing to take the crap job, so why bother changing anything?

the perspective of "encouraging" an employee that was acquired through a buyout to leave. Especially when it comes to how low the pay is. They know full well what it costs to live in the USA. And they know full well we can't do it. They also know speech wreck does NOT "improve MT production." And yet they insist to us that it DOES, and threaten to fire us if we can't do it. Well, I haven't met my company's minimum production requirement for over a year and a half, and ignore their emails and pleas for "all hands on deck" (unpaid, of course). When they write me up (which I've lost count of how many times that has happened), I ignore those, too, and have yet to sign one. I wish they would fire me. But they won't. They don't want to pay out that UE that they KNOW I would get.

The financial impact of any fines would be a drop in the bucket for a company like MM.

Plus, if you're on unemployment, that's all the company pays -- there's no extra SS or income taxes, or benefits, or anything. Costs go waaaay down.

Companies do pay a mandatory "premium" for UE which is based on their number of employees, at least American employees. For every so many UE claims filed and approved, that "premium" goes up. I know this because while I was an independent contractor I was thinking of becoming a company and having employees and after some extensive searching found out about all this. Unemployment is not completely funded by tax revenues from the employees. Then there are those fines mentioned for laying off/firing an employee without good cause. Don't forget, those who can prove they were terminated without cause can also filed a civil suit for I think its called unlawful termination or something like that. So, employers have to look at that possibility and the ensuing lawyer fees, court costs, settlement amounts, etc.

Also, the employers pay no part of your income taxes for fed, state and local; that's all fully paid by each employee. The only income tax employers help pay is SS and I think Medicare as well as any part of the health plan premiums promised for those who had the health plans.

Companies do fight UE claims and the reasons above are why. A big company like MM may not have to pay much but we have all seen how greedy big companies including them can be and are so it does hurt them sort of.

I don't see much talk about EMR taking over the MTs job. This has happened to me with my last three companies (small transcription companies) that I have worked for. With my last job we had an account with a large hospital that had a cardiology group we transcribed for. EMR came in and we were immediately out of a job. I need to listen to some jobs...I did Alt I from the Fluency Editor home screen to get to Manager. I looked up the jobs by searching under detail and the date. I found the job and clicked on the job #, which gave me options of audio file, editor account output, and count log file (payroll). I currently use GearPlayer, and with one of my clients this is required for downloading voice files and uploading completed documents, therefore cannot get rid of it. GearPlayer is fine for my other accounts as those voice files come via email and FTP and I save them to my system and they open and play on GP just fine. I can load it into the dock, but it says there are 0 minutes of dictation. If I play it on Windows Media, it says I need a codec. I don't know what that is.
