Have I been capitalizing things wrong all these years? - dinged dingy

Posted: Oct 17, 2013

I've always capitalized emergency room or clinic when it came after the proper noun, such as St. Mary's Emergency Room or St. Mary's Hospital, etc, since it is a specific name of a specific place.  I have just been dinged by an MME that it should be St. Mary's emergency room and St. Mary's hospital.  Have I been doing it wrong all these years?  According to some grammar sites, I'm correct, but have they changed things?

You are the one who is correct. The QA who did that has rocks in their head or is from India. - nm

one is wrong, one is correct - Sm

It would be St. Mary's Hospital if that was the name of the facility, but it would be St. Mary's emergency room because that is a generalization. If it's an "official" name, then it's capitalized, such as Department of Emergency Services, St. Mary's Hospital, as opposed to emergency room or emergency department.

No - that

[ In Reply To ..]
is wrong. It is St. Mary's Emergency Room and it is not a generalization.

BOS2 P44 - SM - ME

Don't know about BOS3 but BOS2 says this:
1. Capitalize all elements of a building address, including the room name.
Sister Mary Helene
St. Agnes Hospital Emergency Room
Ourtown, USA
2. Do not capitalize common nouns designating rooms; these are generic terms
applied to all similar rooms.

This is correct - Romper Room Lady

This is correct from BOS3.

You would capitalize St Agnes Hospital and St Mary's Emergency Department; however, you don't capital things such as....recovery, post partum, intensive care unit, radiology, cath lab etc.

While this is something that is - normal for most writing...

I think with ASR a lot of "correct" just goes out the window. For example, my ASR capitalizes every specialty such as "the patient was seen by Cardiology." When I see this done over and over again, eventually I just start leaving it, because I figure someone has "trained" it to do this, so why bother changing it.
that was correct also - TP was seen by Cardiology.
[ In Reply To ..]
If you can replace the "cardiology" with a proper name, its capitalized. TP was seen by Joe.

If the sentence was TP went to the cardiology floor, it wouldn't be capped because if you replaced it with a proper name, it wouldn't make sense (TP went to the Joe floor).

Hope my backwards explanation helped instead of confused you.

I am an MME you are correct - hammaga

[ In Reply To ..]
As long as "emergency room" or "department" or "clinic" are part of an entity you do captitalize them.

You're right - AlsoMME

[ In Reply To ..]
You are absolutely right! The patient came to the emergency room. BUT, The patient came to St. Joseph's Emergency Room. Contact your quality coach with Job number and info. We make mistakes too!

I agree with the above. But I am never sure when there is a "the" - in front of the phrase (See msg.)

[ In Reply To ..]
Clearly, without a shadow of a doubt "The patient came to St. Joseph's Emergency Room." is correct.

But, what about the below? Which is correct?

The patient came to the St. Joseph's Emergency Room.

OR

The patient came to the St. Joseph's emergency room.

Capitalizing First Letter Of Sentences
Jul 21, 2011

I was just wondering if anybody out there knows how to switch back and forth between capitalizing the first letter of sentences and not capitalizing.  This is a problem when I go to type H. pylori or C. difficile, because it keeps capitalizing the "Pylori" and "Difficile".  Of course, I asked Support, but they said there was no way to change it.  I just wondered how you guys handle this.  Appreciate any help!! ...

ISR Not Capitalizing First Word In Sentence.
Sep 25, 2014

Anyone else having this a lot lately? It just seems that this should be something very easy for the ISR and yet it is continually NOT capitalizing the first word in a sentence - makes editing slow and tedious because of this glitch at times, because you can never trust it. You would think that would be one of the easier things for the ISR to do, so why is this continuing to be a problem I wonder? Just when I think the ISR is starting to get better with certain dictators and almost back to wher ...

Anyone Else Noticing That VR Is Suddenly Capitalizing
Jun 15, 2015

wasn't capping before?  WTH?  Is this just another sneaky way to catch us on medication errors, which happen to be nice 3-points-off errors that I am sure they love?  I suggest everyone double check all meds now, even though it takes extra time.  I myself do know which are or are not capped for a lot of meds, but not all of them, and it is very easy to let one slip....I think I let one slip on my last report!  Waiting for the email telling me I failed and then the h ...

After Years And Years Of Being IC, Obtained Employee Status At A Co. Sm
Nov 26, 2012

Thought that after not having enough work for a couple years now and always chasing work, I'd now have a "real job" as an employee and wouldn't have to worry about a steady paycheck and paying the bills anymore. The reason I thought this was because at the interview and in their professional company emails, they use all the "real job" words:  Shift, scheduled hours, overtime, PTO, benefits, etc.  I felt relieved to finally have a "job." What a big bunch of BS! I was "hired" ...

3 Years. Question: How Many More Years Do You Plan To Be An MT/editor?
Dec 20, 2013

There is much speculation about the field of transcription - how many of us actually plan to be here 5 years, 10 years, 20 years from now. I realize that the field is going to change, which will contribute to your answer. Will there be enough transcriptionists/editors to fill the need in 5 years and in 10 years? Will the industry be forced out of offshoring because of taxes? Will there be a need even for editors if VR gets better? These are all unanswered questions, but my question is, what ...

Yet, I hate my job!  I have a job with a bigger MTSO, but I am getting less and less in my pay b/c my main account runs out of work often and I get the secondary which is not easy on demographics, and has bad dictators.  This is a job which is an employee job and it looks like my pay is decreasing weekly a ...

I Was So Wrong
Aug 12, 2011

Months ago when I first started researching this line of work I found myself on this forum, and a few others, and I was somewhat put off by the widely negative view of the profession. There was so much complaining about how difficult it was, how meager the compensation is, etc. I thought so many of you were just being pessimistic- to put it politely. I thought to myself, "It's just sitting here typing all day. I do that already! How cool would it be to get payed for it!" And today? Today I ...

This Is Just Wrong
Dec 13, 2011

So, I lost my job. First, they went AWOL for 4 work days. I sat at my computer for 8 hours every one of those days, no work, nobody answering me. Finally, they called and said they were terminating employment due to "low line counts".   I found that funny since my line counts improved since the first month of employment, and at my lowest line count during that time, they gave me a raise and said how great I was doing. It was only after I told them to pay me minimum wage that they suddenly ...

I Am NOT WRONG

First of all, at least 95% of the management that runs KS is ALL family. For being there 9 years, you better check more of your facts, as I know for a fact that there are cousins, nieces, sister-in-law, sisters, brother-in-law, just off the top of my head. If you knew what you were looking for, you CAN find out how much they make. Maybe you should try polishing up your research skills. You can say what you want, but I know better. People can choose to believe me or not believe me; that ...

What Am I Doing Wrong?
Dec 28, 2013

Hello, Let me start by telling my fellow MTs what I am doing. Please point me in right direction, because I can't figure out where I have gone wrong. My job is ending as the small company I work for doesn't have enough work.  I don't have unemployment as a backup since I have been subcontracting clinic work for the past 4 years. This has been my only MT job. I am limited on what I have applied for because I have no acute care experience, only clinic transcription.  I ...

How Can MM ASR Be So Wrong?!!?
May 30, 2014

Dictated: Positive diarrhea. Ouptut: No constipation. Huh???? It already can't get preoperative ands postoperative diagnosis correct, and number recognition is worse than ever. What the heck?? Of course, add to that the added text that was never dictated, the omission of clearly spoken text and making headings randomly. And supposedly the software will learn "if we all get on the same page" (to quote a certain QAM). A mantra that wants to make me scream as the proof tha ...

What Is Wrong With These People?
Jun 11, 2010

A 7-year-old boy was murdered by the Taliban in an apparent act of retribution this week. Afghan officials said that the child was accused of spying for U.S. and NATO forces and hanged from a tree in southern Afghanistan. Daoud Ahmadi, the spokesman for the provincial governor of Helmand, said that the killing happened days after the boy's grandfather, Abdul Woodod Alokozai, spoke out against militants in their home village. Ahmadi said: "His grandfather is a tribal elder in the village a ...

Found Out What's Is Wrong With (at Least Some) Of Us.
Aug 01, 2010

In my quest to improve SOMETHING, I stumbled across "job burnout."  I think it is my problem and wanted to share. "A strong signal that the burnout victim is sliding into an existential crisis of meaninglessness is evident when the person's statements about work are cloaked with a "so what?" or "why bother?" attitude. This is particularly striking among burnout victims who were once very enthusiastic and dedicated." There is some very good information and might be helpful.  At ...

What's Wrong With This Picture?
Jun 30, 2011

I just can't understand it.  For the past 2 weeks my line counts have been slowly dropping below the 1200 daily quota.  Feeling the need to make up some lines, I crammed the work yesterday, going as fast as I can, still maintaining quality, proof reading each document, etc.  I was excited to see how much I did.  A measly 1400 lines.  What the?  It was about 1/3 straight typing, 2/3 ASR.  Even when on 100% straight typing I used to do 200+ lines p ...

Is It Wrong To Ask The Pay Rate?
Sep 06, 2011

I've recently been contacted to test with a company and was told what they pay during their training period but not once you are released to send work directly to the client.  Upon asking (for a low/high range) I was told I have to test first.  I've been this route before only to have wasted my time being offered something like 6 or 7 cpl for an IC position.  Am I really out of line wanting to know what I might be getting into before taking the time to test? ...
