DQS-7 system requirements state 4 GB RAM for - yikes

Posted: Jul 30, 2012

Windows 7-64 bit.  My Windows 7-64 bit computer only has 2 GB of RAM.  Is anybody else using a Windows 7-64 bit computer with less than 4 GB of RAM?

2 GB of RAM - MT

2 GB of RAM is really cheap and easy to install yourself. My laptop has 2 GB and I wanted to upgrade to 4 GB. I just took off the back panel and looked at it, found the empty slot where it would go. Went online, found the make and model # of my computer and found the type of RAM. It is about 12 bucks on Amazon and instructions on how to install it. Turn off the computer, slide it in the slot, all done.

I think you could run DQS7 with 2 GB but it would be too slow, take too long to download each job, cost you money in the long run. You could even buy the RAM and take it to a shop and have a techie guy install it, would be cheaper that way too.

Thank you so much, MT. I had no idea it was that - yikes

easy. I will check Amazon.

Yep, very easy to put in RAM - Make sure you get the right kind though

I'm not sure what kind of computer you have, but make sure that the RAM you get is compatible with your motherboard and that you have enough slots. It may be easiest to take out the RAM that's already in there and get the same brand and same numbers (eg DDR333 and PC2700). Some brands don't cooperate well with other brands. On a desktop PC, you will have to push down the clamps on each side of the RAM stick to release it, and it should come out easily. Likewise, when installing push down evenly until you hear the clamps click into place (make sure the RAM is in the right direction; there is a notch in the chip that will line up).

Hopefully your RAM won't need you to set the timings in the BIOS as that may get complicated, but you'll probably be okay; this is usually only the case when you get RAM kit of 2 or more.
Good idea. I didn't think to take out the RAM that - yikes

is already in there and get the numbers off it. I was searching by the computer name and numbers on the outside of the computer. I will work on getting the RAM out tomorrow and check the numbers on it and search. I hope my RAM doesn't need any timings set in the BIOS either. Thank you for the additional info too.
Oh yeah, be sure to ground yourself - to be on the safe side

Sometimes a static electric charge can screw up a component. You can either have one hand (or bare arm) on the case while you're taking the stick out, or, what I do (which is poor practice), is just touch the case immediately before I take anything out.
I just touch the computer before I work on it? Does - yikes
[ In Reply To ..]
that zap the static charge from happening to the computer but what happens to my arm with the static? (LOL)
Here's an in-detail explanation - Geek and proud of it

Hopefully this will help. Don't let it scare you from tinkering with your PC. I build my own all the time and have no problems. Once I started building my own, that's when I realized the PCs that you get from Dell, Best Buy, HP, etc., are absolute junk.
That was a great article. I was amazed to learn - yikes

a rolling desk chair is one of the worst creators of static charge. They said to roll the chair away when working on the computer. I had no idea they made wrist bands for the static too. Since you build computers, maybe you wear one. I agree about Dell and HP being junk, especially Dell which seems to last about 3 years max.

Thank you for the article and help.

MTSOs And Residing In Certain State Requirements
Jul 18, 2012

I am curiious to know why some MTSOs who state they can only hire MTs who live in certain geographical areas of the country even though the work is received through a transcription-based platform that can transmit work over the Internet.  I can understand why an MTSO would want to hire someone who lives in the area to be able to come to the office and pick up tapes, etc. ...

I was wondering if anyone knows where I can find specific information on running DQS on my computer.  I can run it on my desktop but recently purchased a new laptop that has a 64 OS and DQS only works with 32.  Also, my old laptop won't run it for some reason even though it used to before DQS upgraded.  Anyway, I would like to find the specifications on running DQS if anyone can help.  thank you. ...

What are the system hours requirements for Medquist (or anyone else on here) and do any of you find it hard to acheive target?  I'm at the point where emails, conf calls, computer updates, etc are all on my own time separate from typing time, and even at that, seems hard to acheive.  My boss is expecting me to be on the system typing for 7 hours and 40 minutes a day. so no breaks, and if jobs are slow to load or silly me need to get a drink or use the facilities....Appreciate the ...

State Of The Malunion
Apr 15, 2010

I Googled "medical transcription quality India" and received 671,000 results to choose from.  Indian companies are courting hospitals, doctors, and law firms in America and several other countries in order to get their business. American MTSOs that don't outsource really need to publicize it and American based transcriptionists would do well to show their solidarity by working for such companies.  It is not just MQ.  The industry is apparently wounded in t ...

Sad, Sad State Of Affairs
Dec 02, 2011

All the threads about fighting to get paid minimum wage (you go, girls!) make me incredibly sad.  So I started reminiscing about my early days in the profession.... In the good ole days, we were paid a fair, decent rate. In the good ole days, we got to interact with the docs we transcribed for.  If you had a blank, he would tell you what it was! In the good ole days, we got an extra paycheck and a generous gift for Christmas.  (One year I got a small cooler filled with seafood ...

Registering As An IC With Your State

MTs In The State Of Tennessee
Sep 23, 2013

I was just laid off last Thursday.  For MTs that live in the State of Tennessee and have recently gotten laid off, how hard did you find it to filling out that log sheet to prove that you are looking for a job while drawing UE benefits.  I noted that one has to log in that log sheet  3  different companies that they are actually looking for work weekly.   There are only so many online MT jobs that one could contact.  I noted they mention job fairs, private employmen ...

MUP/state Min Wage Etc.
Feb 12, 2015

This may be a stupid question, but is the minimum for lines expected changed in a state where the minimum wage is higher? I was fired in June for not reaching the min daily line count and went below 99% on 2 of the 3 weeks I was on probation. Illinois has an $8.25 min wage. I was at 98.25% for 2 out of the 3 weeks. (I know that has nothing to do with my question...) I want to remind everybody AGAIN, if you are threatened in any way about losing your job, FIND A WAY TO COPY THE EMAILS! I ...

Question For Washington State ICs
Nov 18, 2009

I've heard that in Washington State you have to pay a tax called "business and occupation taxes".  Is this true?  If so what does it cost?   Looking at moving to Washington State and trying to figure out all the taxes beforehand (if there would be a benefit business wise to move out of Oregon).  Here in OR I pay a business tax of $50/year.  Just wondering what all the taxes in Washington would be. If anyone is not sure, can you direct me to where I might find this o ...

Does Your Company Withhold State Tax?
Feb 12, 2010

I have been in the interview process with a national and was informed state tax would not be withheld.  In that case, they would also not be paying into unemployment in my state.  I am trying to protect myself in the event I need unemployment for lack of work or lay offs in the future and this was a real let down to me regarding this company.  Is this how most nationals work? ...

No State Taxes Withheld
Aug 04, 2011

I have an interview with a hospital that will not take out state taxes, but does take out federal taxes.  The hospital is in a state where no state taxes are required, but I live in a state where I have to pay.  How does this process work and what would this entail for me if I get an offer on this job?  It provides health insurance, medical, dental, and vision, but no state taxes.  Will that affect social security?  Anyone know the process and percentage to withhold, how ...

Applying For Out Of State Jobs

I'm sure that this question has been asked and answered before, but wanted to bring it up again.  Have any of you ever applied for an MT position for a clinic or hospital that was out of state and asked if you could work from home for the clinic/hospital, and you were hired by the clinic/hospital?  I see so many ads for MTs, but none are in my state and more than most times, they don't list whether telecommuting is an option (perhaps it is assumed in that regard that the posi ...
