getting a 2nd MT job - thoughts? - anon

I graduated from school last year and have worked as an IC with a company for 3 months. I was told I'd be the sole MT on one small Ortho account, but now I know I was lied to. Other MTs grab everything out of the queue and I'm lucky if I make $23/day, many days I get 0 jobs. The office manager is so clueless that she is entirely unhelpful, and after several attempts I've given up trying to get the work I was promised when hired.

I need the money so I can't quit, but I can't live on just $23/day either. So I'd like to get a 2nd job, but I don't know how to go about it. Do I tell who I'm applying to that I already have one job? Can I tell them to not contact my current employer? I'm a newbie MT so any experience is better than none, so I want to tell prospective employers, but I can also see this clueless office manager having a technicolor fit if she finds out I'm working a 2nd job.

Any thoughts? Don't tell me to go into another field; I was previously a broker, but my health is too poor for me to work in a decent-paying field anymore. MT was what I went into out of desperation. In retrospect, it was a stupid choice, but now I'm stuck so advice would be helpful. Thanks.

i got a 2nd job. most companies want you to work a SHIFT now or be available a certain time. I do a 9 to 5 and then a 6 pm to 2 am and all is well.

Yes, I'm expected to be at this job 10 AM to 6 PM even if I have nothing to do. That's another problem, I'm sitting here 8 hours with only 2 hours' of work.

I was thinking I could work another job at the same time. Wonder if my computer could handle it?

If you are sitting there with no work on your ortho account, you have plenty of opportunity to find and learn another account with a diffrent company. Many of us work for 2 companies.. your computer can handle it too! I have had 3 platforms running on mine over the years.

Thanks for that about running multiple platforms on 1 computer, I was honestly concerned about that.

I've been sending out email inquiries but I haven't gotten an answer. I don't know if telling them I'm already employed is a good idea or not.

I'd put them on your resume though, but ask they not be contacted. If the prospective job ask why are you looking for another job tell them you don't get enough work, honest and very believeable. I have the opposite problem too much work, too much stress. But making some adjustments now to my load so I won't have so much which is gonna hurt as I really need the money but it is killing me working from 8am to 11pm every day, granted that is not solid work time, I put in about 12 hours a day though. So from now on I should be able to do it in about 8 hours and maybe just maybe be able to live a more normal life. I will know in the next few weeks or so. ---But I have always worked two jobs sometimes 3 though. I am thinking of looking elsewhere now but that is as far as I have gotten, just burnt out a bit and stressed, doubt I will actually leave as I really like where I work and they are truly IC which I love, not too many of them around anymore. If I do it will just be something small PT, 30 mins a day. Did on-call work for this one company a while back that paid well....maybe I will give them a call one of these days. --But you should bring up the fact they promised you this account, etc. If they cannot deliver on it, is there a comprable account they could give you so you can actually make at least $100 a day?--- you won't know until you try. I asked for another account weeks ago and was told no at first. I asked again and this time was given a 2nd account, but I am forbidden to work on it without specific permission on a day to day basis, which of course never happens.

You really just need to have the survival instinct and take care of number one--put your feelers out, list your experience, your specialty, and give it a shot. You owe your current employer nothing but your effort when there is work. Something good will come of this. I have been working 2 jobs for a long time (3 for a bit) and it's doable. We become quite industrious when we realize that the employer is out for themselves and the bottom line and we are not a part of that equation. Keep trying until you find the right fit. It's out there.

I think that when we edit an ASR document, we should be compensated at our transcription rate for every keystroke we do to make the report ready for the client. Since Medquist is so accurately able to calculate our keystrokes, mouse clicks and so on, it should be easy for them to determine how many extra keystrokes were required to prepare the final report. ...

Do you guys think the minimum line count will be going up soon? Some states have raised their minimum wage. Trying to figure out how some of us would be able to hold on if it were to go up any higher than 150/hr. Barely able to meet that as it is. of fixing report after report. VR was sold with fradulant representation. The way this has continued is the MT is to "fix" these reports to the facilities specs and regardless of what comes over, the end report is to be correct. Why don't they just pay the MTs a decent wage instead of paying all the extra QA people for all the extra audits? This is a convoluted mess - transparent to who? Einstein? I was wondering why in the new 6.1 version, it takes more words to get an automatic S marker inserter (highlighting words then using the delete button). I used to have to count the words and if 5 or more, used to place the S marker. I wonder why now the difference. Just the ramblings and observations of me.. The national I worked for the longest was MDI-MD and it truly was the best compared to everything else I had experienced as far as national companies. New 99% accuracy requirement: This is the pay cut everyone was fearing, just with a different name. More accuracy means more time spent going over reports for "errors" hence less pay.
