do you get vacation time as an IC? - or sm

how do they handle you being sick, etc, when you are an IC? Do you get PTO? It has been so long since I was an IC I do not remember. I'm thinking you get nothing and are able to take off whenever you need to.

I didn't think Nuance hired ICs. I used to work as an IC for a different company and it was like you said, you don't get paid. I was able to take a couple of weeks off a year with no problem. I suppose it depends on the company and if they have coverage for you. I work for Nuance now part time and only get about 5 days a year of PTO. I will never be able to save enough for a whole week off!

I am employed directly by the physicians so so MTSO in the middle. At one office I have other people who I can rely on to pick up the slack for illness (I don't think I've ever been sick in 9 years) or if we take a vacation. We all work together in that way. At my other 2 offices I am the only transcriptionist so I get NO time off with them. :( Even when I travel I have to get their work done.

Been an IC for two years. I find if I am truly sick or need time off, I let them know as soon as I can. As long as you do a good job, if you want a vacation, etc., let them know ahead of time and they have no problems with this. The thing is, "communicate" with them.

no problem with getting off. I let my job know well in advance of days I want off. The time of off without pay, of course. Healthy so very little time missed because of sickness. We only are required to let them know as soon as we can if illness should develop.

How do you handle this??? I have a few clients that don't tell me when they will not be in the office and then right before they go away everything becomes a STAT. I've been in this business for 30 years, but am under employed at the moment and am starting to get bored to tears with having so little work to do. But, it seems that all of the ads that I see are looking for full time transcriptionists. It has been inconvenient, and maybe a bit confusing at times, to check my time card hours for my shift as, because of my time zone, part of my hours show up on the next day because I work 2nd shift. I wonder if I will get overtime for yesterday, even though I did not work overtime. Ever since they have changed Schedule Source and now it has a display called today's activity with "actuals" hours, this has not matched the hours shown with the time clock punches and is less than the hours according to the clock punch.
