career change to massage therapist suggestion - mtisdead

Posted: Mar 06, 2014

My son is attending massage therapy training and will be done the end of June. He will be making more money than I will be once working. It only took a year. He is going for another year to earn an AA, but will start working and go to school at night. It's kind of expensive, but I think it would be a rewarding career. There is an extensive anatomy course that we MTs would breeze through, so I thought I would pass this suggestion on. I realize some of you are in remote areas and this is not available to you. It's a profession where some of our knowledge can be put to use and it can't be off-shored. It can be done from our homes, and we would be our own bosses and make our own schedules. I am considering going myself. I would love to get out of MT forever. What a sinkhole it's become. Aside from the physical demands, how stressful could this be compared to MT? And you can do it forever. No time limits or forced retirement. You are your own boss.

I took the course and passed the licensing many years ago. Unfortunately, when people get short on money, massage is not something you spend it on. Also, unless you get a job in a medical-type facility, i.e., chiropractor or physical therapy location, you have to build up a clientele before you make any money, so you spend a lot of time waiting around a salon, etc., waiting for clients. I didn't make enough money to make it worth while, and I was set up in a salon. Went back to MT. Just a word of caution.

I say go for it. - sm

I think you have to be somewhat of a self starter to build a client base, but it sounds like you're motivated enough to do it. Great idea!

If you are taking clients into your home, you'd have to ensure you have the proper business papers, liability insurance, etc.

If you live relatively near a high-end rent district, they may have a spa where you can be employed. People who are rich share no expense and have no problems being pampered. You could also work at a gym.

You could wait and see how your son makes out, then decide from there what the best course of action would be.

I knew an in-house MT... - who was a masseuse on the side.

She said it was really hard on your arms and hands, and she was in her 20s! She was really skinny though and lived on Skittles...

It's not real clear if your son will be making more money than you are. Perhaps the hourly rate will be high, but it's not to say he'll be working a lot of hours.

I had thought about doing this, but I don't think my body could handle that sort of stress.

Long-time massage client here with several therapists over the years - In-House Lead

I've had ongoing treatment from five different therapists over the years, and they all say the same thing:

Yes, your hourly rate is high but you may only have three clients a day. With the exception of one, who works at a chiropractor's office, everybody just works part-time and also does something else. It's not enough to live off of.

The one "full-time" guy really only works 28 hours/does 28 massages a week -- that's considered full-time in that world. He told me he only knows of one other woman who massages "full-time."

It could be some nice side income to supplement your other income streams.

Wait until you see how your son does wth it. The income is unlikely to be as high as he thinks,i.e., as high as the school convinced him it would be. A major factor in that is the presence of a school in your area; it will flood the market, limiting oportunities and what you can charge.

It is very difficult, stressful work, with a high incidence of arm, hand, and back injuries. The average time to burnout is about 6 years.

The anatomy is much more detailed than MTs know, and requires a working knowledge of origins, insertions, actions, and the ability to identify them by feel. It is more than just anatomy, too.

My state requires licensure for therapists and establishments, as well as expensive liability insurance. You can be sued for malpractice. CEUs for relicensure are very expensive. It is illegal here and in many states to work in your home, nor do you want to. The liability is too high, and the risk to yourself is too great. Doing massage in the client's home is even more dangerous. If you work in a doctor's office, be prepared to never get paid. They do the billing and won't pay you until they get paid, and a lot of insurers won't pay for massage, so you do a lot of work for free. I know a lot of MTs who all worked for the same doctors, one after the other, with each one working on the promise of being paid later. The doctors basically get massage therapist services for free. Be prepared to work on them for free, too, and expect them to hire sweet young things of whichever gender they prefer.

LOL- I've been doing transcription too long and no longer have strength in my hands or forearms (beginnings of carpal tunnel) to do massage therapy....

Those were my thoughts, too - Not OP

[ In Reply To ..]
Yep, can't be said enough. I had mentioned liability in a post above and I had also mentioned to wait and see how her son makes out before assuming anything. A high hourly rate, doesn't necessarily mean every hour of every working day.

I would also maybe try to network out to some massage therapists in her area to see what the market is like. However, they may tell her the market is bad---you know, so they don't feel threatened by her taking work away from them.

I would be more inclined to try and work at a spa or something where the employer holds the liability. People are sue-happy sometimes, and you just don't need that responsibilty.

Possible Career Change
Jun 25, 2011

I am considering taking classes for MT as I am ready for a change in my life. As I am looking into MT I have come across several questions that I want to ask to save myself the stress, etc. of preparing to start something that may not be what I am looking for. I see the different schools listed that others have recommended and yet I also see where my local community college offers course in MT. In your opinion would the courses there be suffice to work as a MT? For those working as MT, what do ...

Looking Into Career Change From MT
Jul 10, 2012

I've been doing medical transcription for 17 years now.  It used to be a good field to get into and good pay, but as the medical transcription field seems to be slowly phasing out and it's getting harder to make a decent living as we are getting lower wages and less work, I've been thinking about going back to school and getting a bachelor's in health informatation managment or administration.  I already have an assosciate's degree, but I would like to know wha ...

Looking For Career Change
Dec 16, 2012

I have been doing transcription for 30 years. I am fed up with it. I started working in a hospital and was making $17 an hr when they decided to lay us off. Then we went contract with the company the hospital was using at .10 cpl. Then, in October, we found out that Nuance had taken over. Now I am making .8 cpl. I want to make a career change. I have been sending out applications since August, probably close to 30 or more, with no interviews at all, no calls, nothing. I think all they see is all ...

Considering A Career Change...any Advice?
Dec 15, 2009

I've finally made myself accept the fact that medical transcription is never going to return to its former state and have been wondering in what other field I have an interest and could once again earn a decent living. Does anyone on the forum have any paralegal or legal secretary experience?  I've been researching this field online and have found a few on-line courses but, as with MT, I know I have to be really careful which course I choose and from whom.  If anyone h ...

MT As Career Change Choice
Sep 06, 2010

Hi,  I hope you don't mind a visitor from the outside I'm here because I need to change careers. I'm 59 , female, single, and have done one career all my life which has been clinical social work/mental health counseling.  I'm burned out with this career and alot has indicated that medical transcription might suit me.  Where do I begin? What training do I need? Do I need training at all? (this may sound dumb) What schools are the best? Online versus ...

Advice On Career Change
Aug 24, 2011

I've been a medical transcriptionst for 25 years (most of that time working at home)...I can't believe how much money I am losing....I used to think that I would never go back into an office/hospital to work because I wouldn't be making enough money.  Now, I am at my wits end.  My pay has literally been cut in half, no thanks to EMR/VR.  I am at a loss as to what to do...should I change careers (at age 49) or keep doing what I'm doing, while getting further and ...

Career Change Back To MT?
Sep 24, 2011

I was a medical transcriptionist for 9 years, working from home.  Two years ago, I left the field and took an opportunity elsewhere.  At the time, it was a better opportunity financially.  It turns out that this position is not what I thought it was going to be.  The money is nice, but the stress and the job itself are making me miserable!  When I quit transcribing 2 years ago, I was making about 0.9 cents/line and only working part-time.  My current position pays a ...

New MT Thinking Of Career Change...
Jan 29, 2012

I have been working at an OBGYN office for 10 months now and for reasons I'd rather not get into, I am having issues with my MT supervisor. I love MT work. I do feel it is the right niche for me. However, my LPH is under 100 and I do not feel that I am getting enough work to improve my speed. I am still new and still learning. I'm starting to wonder if I might be better off setting up a home office and trying to get on with a company like Medquist or something. I am getting paid on ...

Career Change Advice
Jun 06, 2012

Hello!  I just found this board and am hoping for some advice.  I will give you some background information first.  I am a LPN, but have been a SAHM only for nearly 4 years.  I actually left the profession because of burn-out, and my husbands job allowed be to stay home.  I love being home, but I'm feeling a bit restless.  I'd like to start contributing a bit financially, without huge committments.  (I am VP of my kids' PTA and I keep plenty busy in many aspects). 2 Jobs That Will Never Be Offshored...if You Want A Career Change
Jan 29, 2010

Makes sense to me; I'd opt to be an electrician (if I can't get on disability). Automotive technicians and mechanics repair and maintain automobiles and light trucks. Motorists need these services near their homes and businesses, meaning this hands-on work would be pretty hard for someone in another country to do. So rest easy. This job is staying close to home.  Training is a 6-month or 1-year automotive repair certificate program or a 2-year associate degree program.& ...

Career Change - RHIT, Coding And LPN?
Aug 02, 2011

I've been an MT for 10 years but for the past year I have been in school working towards an AA degree in Health Information Management.  I would like to be an RHIT and do coding somewhere.  However, I like it but not enough to want to do this for the rest as my life as I am only 34.  I love the medical field and want to stay in it but am thinking of switching my major.  I think maybe switching to LPN and then eventually become an RN.  I think that I might enjoy working with people more ...

Current MT Needing Career Change
Aug 09, 2011

I've decided I am getting out of MTing.  The two options I am interested are completely different yet in the medical field which I love.  First is health information management, 2-year degree.  Would like to be a coder but worried it will end up like MT in 10 years.  Second is becoming an LPN and then down the road an RN.  I am in my early 30s and I've got a long work life ahead of me but want to be happy!  Which way to go? ...

Just A Suggestion
Nov 22, 2010

I want to make a suggestion to the MTs out there who are looking for work.  Rather than possibly posting on the Jobs Wanted board, post your resume on the Resume Bank.  I received a call a week ago Saturday from a company looking for MTs -- they have not posted openings here on MT Stars or on the other board, but they are looking.  I know this because I spoke today with the person that hired me.  He (as the company rep, mentioned that when he goes to the Resume Board), there ...

TransTech Suggestion
Jul 19, 2011

How about this? For holiday coverage, why not schedule 4-hour shifts instead of 8-hour shifts with hardly anything to do? For example, why not have some MTs commit to the following shifts: 7am-11am 11am-3pm 3pm-7pm 7pm-11pm 11pm-3am 3am-4am I think the MTs would like that idea. They could spend time with family/friends on the holidays without being on call and having to check their queue every 15 minutes or so for some work. They commit and work for 4 hours and are done. I've worked ...

Here's A Suggestion For Those Wanting To Know
Jan 08, 2013

Cheap, cheap, cheap. You should pay your peeps. You could tell the clients NTS cannot keep up with work because people are jumping ship like rats from a hot fire. Perhaps management (upper, way upper I mean) could explain instead of the TLs having to do it, that they needed so much money to take to the bank they had to cut the pay of all their employees, now they have green, not as speedy, uninitiated MTs doing the work. Most of the good ones have fled the scene. And here's another rant: ...

Recommendation/Suggestion
Apr 16, 2013

Everyone should make a habit of getting a letter of reference from CURRENT employers even before you are actually looking for another job.  All you have to say is that you are updating your resume and want to be sure you have current letters of reference attached as well.  It doesn't matter if you are working as an "employee", if they are happy with you and with your work, they should have no problem giving this to you.  If you are an "IC", it should be even easier since you ...

MT Pay Solution, Maybe..just A Suggestion
Jun 20, 2013

This is how we got paid at a major department store when I was a hairdresser: Guaranteed minimum wage for hours worked. If our production exceeded minimum wage we were paid a percentage of that production on top of the minimum wage, usually 40%. I would love to have MTs guaranteed at least a minimum wage for hours worked (or waiting to work) and anything we produce that exceeds that wage should be paid at the customary cpl.  This would encourage higher production, benefitting th ...

Just A Helpful Suggestion ...
Mar 11, 2014

Some of you don't need me to tell you this, but others might benefit from this advice.   Reading through the posts on this coding training, I am seeing some legitimate questions and concerns, but also some that are so off the wall that they are either the product of the world's worst paranoid or someone who is intentionally trying to discourage you. The content and tone is a lot like some of the negativity that gets posted on the coding board every time some one asks about coding ...

A Suggestion For Nuance
Dec 29, 2014

You know that's your aim anyway. That way you can save money on all the middlemen and enforcers, i.e. you can stop making good QA/QC people into inquisitors. If you want to offer a true bonus, just let everyone know they will make 7 c/l, THEN offer incentives, that way at least we know we can expect the base salary and the bonus will truly be a bonus, not a penalty. There are a lot of companies that only pay that 7 cents per line, who have QA staff who are there to actually guide the MT a ...

Autocorrect Suggestion Box?

Speech Wreck Suggestion

I have tried to explain to manager that the program is slow, and does not seem to ever correct a lot of "normal" dictation, so I have come here to ask a question of you.  I feel that we are not getting enough keystroke count for these jobs.  I have had lengthy jobs with small actual counts because of all the repairing (MEing), and pickiing up of nearby conversations, using markers judiciously as requested.  None of these markers are included in the count that I can see, but they a ...
