With auto-correct, how to differentiate between well-healed and well healed? - Janet

Posted: Nov 24, 2009

I entered into Word Auto-Correct "wh" for well-healed, which is great until I need to type "well healed" without the hyphen. Ideas please: what do you use for short cuts for "well-healed" and for "well healed"?  Same for floor-of-mouth and floor of mouth. There must be some consistent way to do these hypen and no-hyphen phrases. TIA-

you could add an extra h to your wh denoting a hypen in the expansion. I do this when - SM

I have caps and no caps. I add a c (for cap) to the end of my abbreviation.

Good idea- both for hyphen and caps - thanks - Janet

Here is what I do: (sm) - Zircon

What I do is have 2 of them in autocorrect: wh1 for "well healed", and wh2 for "well-healed". I also have atc1 for "around the clock", and atc2 for "around-the-clock". I also use 1's and 2's for singulars and pleurals, when the pleurals are within a phrase, as it's too much of a pain to go back and add an "s" anywhere but the end of a sentence, such as "airway disease" vs "airways disease".

I try to stick to a similar formula for all my autocorrect macros, so that there's less to remember.

I also use the numbering system for times when one abbreviation has several words or phrases that could go with it. What I do there is put the "1" after the shortest phrase, and "2" and "3", etc. after longer ones.

Or, you can use numbers to differentiate between more-often-used words you type, and those you come upon only occasionally.

I hope my system is of help to you!
:)

thanks- I printed this out so I can read it carefully - Janet

and perhaps implement it. As you stated, I want to stick to a similar formula for my auto-correct shortcuts to take the guesswork out of it.

Thanks for your time. I always get helpful ideas when I ask questions on this board! Then I worry about why I did not think of them in the first place! But, I am glad we can swap ideas.

Youre welcome! Glad I could be of help - Feel free to ask anytime! - Zircon

You probably already know this, but just in case you don't:

I discovered not too long ago that you can make your autocorrect go further, since it's capacity isn't unlimited:

If you have a phrase in your autocorrect, such as "signs and symptoms", for example, let's say your shortcut is "sas" (in lowercase letters) in your autocorrect:

If you type "sas" in all lower case, you'll get the phrase in all lower case.

If you type "Sas", just capitalizing the first letter, you'll get "Signs and symptoms".

Finally, if you type "SAS" in all-caps, you'll get "SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS" in all-caps.

Three macros squeezed out of just one abbreviation!

Again, you problably already know that, but I only recently figured it out, so it's got me feeling like I've invented the wheel. ;)

put also in your autocorrect: replace: "pleural" with "plural"...nm - does

I never tire of hearing shortcut strategies.

I always benefit from these useful and effective ideas, and I love putting them to use and refining my methods!
Thanks. Heres something Im trying out in order - to try to stay focused. (sm)

I've never been diagnosed with ADD, but sometimes I swear I've got it. When I'm transcribing I have the attention span of a gnat. Not too long ago I bought an old mantle clock with a loud chime that sounds every hour and half-hour. I keep it in another room because it ticks too loudly to transcribe near it, but I can still hear it chime. Whenever it chimes, I'm trying to train my brain to stop wandering (or sleeping, or daydreaming, or surfing the web, or whatever else it's doing, rather than concentrating on work). So far it seems to be helping.
