Why I Hate Predatory MT Blogging and Web Promotions - Sending A Message

Posted: Jul 17, 2012

I'm really angry about something today.

Blogging is just a way to suck people in and sell them something under the guise of us all being buddies and friends. I'm bringing this conversation up from below because I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who hates blogs, MT and otherwise.

Visiting different blogs about MT and other topics sounded like a fun way to network until it just turned out to be just one more way for people to persuade, nag, and otherwise pressure me to buy something. I am tired of signing on to different groups for discussions and having it turned into a sales meeting.

Facebook is getting to be almost as bad. Someone is always trying to cram something down the throats of the readers. That wasn't why I signed up for Facebook. That isn't why I visit blogs, or used to visit them. I'm through with them.

Just one too many sales promotion.

Kind of like cable TV-- - no advertisement.

[ In Reply To ..]
Same ploy. They suck you in. Remember why cable TV became so popular way back when. Gasp--pay for television! And then it seemed to be a great idea thinking that paying for TV would keep you from suffering through commercial advertisements and look where we are now with cable/satellite TV programming. Everything is a racket these day.

I still refuse to pay for television! - Antenna TV 4 Me!

Just my opinion and I mean - no offense.

I used to read some blogs, and in fact, one BFF had one herself. I could totally see "her" in what she was writing; however, it had nothing to do w/ work. I love FB because I've found a lot of dear friends from old times and we still can just talk openly. If you are getting that stuff on your FB, either block it or don't "like" it. That should stop that problem. As for the blogs, it's your choice as to what you are reading and what you ignore.

Have to agree. There are lots of great people out in - blogland. Your choice who you read or do not. NM

Blogs - On Site MT

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't read the MT blogs and I don't have a Facebook account. I have read other blogs that people have started, though, and none of them have been predatory and no one was selling anything. Keep looking, you're bound to find something that you enjoy. If you don't like Facebook, close your account and stop using it.

I used to like Blogs but they take valuable time away from my family - My opinion

[ In Reply To ..]
I was thinking about this conversation last night and realized just how much time I have wasted this last year or two on reading blogs that are pretty much useless. There are days when I spent half an hour to even up to an hour. Multiply that out and that's a lot of wasted time.

Then I went through and made a list of things that I could have done with actual face contact with real people.

Right now I'm limiting myself to a certain amount of time here, and blogs are out of my life, I hope for good. They are a time addiction my family can't afford.

Rule #1 First Time A Blog Promotes Something That Costs $ - Delete it and Keep Away

[ In Reply To ..]
We have enough of that these days. We are pummeled daily with "Buy this!" "This will change your life!" "You won't be okay until you use this product or service"

I have a new rule about blogs, because I'm also getting tired of being pressured every time I turn around.

The first time a blogger tries to sell me something, they have lost me as a reader. The first time they try to promote an event, a product, or even another blog, I'm out of there.

Making $ is the Purpose of 99% of all Blogs - Get Real!

[ In Reply To ..]
Go to Amazon and look at all the books on blogging. There is one purpose. Make Money! Did you not know that? Did you really think they do it for the good of mankind?

One thing all blogs have in common. They collect groups of people, then they sell things to them. Some of them sell ideas. Some of them sell products or services. Most sell a combination. You can make more money if you throw a few ideas in there so it doesn't look like you're always promoting something that costs your readers money.

Nonsense. A small percentage become successful enough that - advertisers will pay them for space, but

[ In Reply To ..]
even then the vast majority of that percentage don't actually solicit sales, they just display ads along the side. Most blogs, by far, are also not public. My blog on Wordpress is not.

I rest my case. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
You have collected a group of people who follow your blog and you make money displaying ads to them, even if you are kind enough not to try to promote events or products.

Don't try to make it sound as if you are doing this for any other purpose than to make money. That is what blogging is all about. Plain and simple.
SM, since you despise blogs so much, you might want to - create a blog-hater's blog to
[ In Reply To ..]
discuss all the blogs you hate, why you hate blogs and bloggers, etc.

You could leave it a private diary for expressing your feelings without reservation or check a box to allow it to be public, if needed clean up the language a bit as required by your blog host, and let fly. If you tag it with search terms that people use to find the blogs you hate, they'll find yours too. Judging by reponses here, you'll likely even get some fellow blog-hater followers.

The two biggest blog sites are Blogger and Wordpress. Go join the dark side. It's free...
Well now, just because something is free doesn't mean it's worth anything - Not For Me but SM
[ In Reply To ..]
Thanks for the recommendation. If I were into blogs, that would probably be a great place to check out. I have to limit my play time. Blog lovers are probably much more organized than I am. Maybe that's one of the reasons why they are blog lovers and I'm not so much.

Well get this.. - about blogs

[ In Reply To ..]
I have a neighbor, bright woman, former RN who decided to train for MT. I encouraged her. She began to take a class and did well, but then she decided it was boring and she would rather start a BLOG!! She is hoping to make money at it when people buy things she promotes. Are you kidding me right now? She has nothing to say! She is expecting money to fall in her lap rather than work for it. Is that absurd or what??

It seems like a lazy way to make a living or maybe avoid work - Just my opinion

[ In Reply To ..]
Regarding blogs and the bloggers who blog them. It takes laziness to a whole new level. I always wonder if they may just be burned out with actual work and be looking for an EZ way to make a couple of bucks. Even as a hobby, I just don't get it.
There are a couple of good MT blogs though that do a pretty good job - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I've visited several MT blogs that are actually very thoughtful and intelligent, not lazy at all. Whether they do it as a serious endeavor or as a hobby, they do it well. I wish I had those kinds of writing skills and I might try it. I wouldn't do what someone did to me in a non-MT blog though. This was a well-known author who writes about the stock market and economy. In the back of his book, he promoted his newsletter. I signed up for it and it ended up being nothing but promoting still another newsletter that costs money. I opted out, but you can't get out. Once you're in, you can set a filter, but in a few weeks you get hit again sent a different way. You filter that one out and get hit again. I've written to be removed from their lists and they won't stop. Now that is bad blogging. The MT blogs that I know are nothing like that, not predatory at all. I don't think they are anything to fear. Corporate MT blogs are a different animal. Individual ones can be very informative.

What a stupid field I am in.   PS - If I wasn't too old, if the economy wasnt tanked, and if if if I would be out of this so-called profession. i would have left a ...

Why I Hate QA
Mar 29, 2010

I type a lot of crap, but just had the worst doc I think I ever had.  Had 11 QA markers so I sent it to QA thinking they might actually LIKE getting some work since they are about to be history.  Anyways, this bi*ch marked 2 CRITICAL ERRORS and did an audit on it (which was still 96.5% in spite of everything I am glad to say).  QA you wonder why we have such a bad attitude?  That was totally unnecessary.  ...

I spend a lot of time typing for a huge university hospital clinic with no ADT.  Have to type in all patient information.  Almost every report is a LETTER.  Referring physician has to be typed into the ADT.  Then the letter recipient information has to be typed in and lo and behold have to re-type it into the cc list for the doc to get a copy of the letter.  I wonder why I can't run a decent line count?  I spend 50% of my time typing in information that I am no ...

Don't you just hate it when you've got a dictation that is so fraught with static, and it sounds like the dictator is 100  miles away from the phone, but you actually can make out the words, just barely, and you'd love to leave all blanks because it's such a chore to hear any of it, but you can't, of course, because you can make it out?  Several of these in a row is enough to make me want to punch my computer!  (or eat lots of chocolate!) ...

Just Realized What I Really Hate About ASR.
Jul 14, 2010

I was just chatting with someone about transcription and ASR (it's been about 3 months since we switched) and it came to me what my biggest problem with it is.  We have no control over it.  With regular transcription, we are only limited by the quality of the dictation the sound.  The harder we work at perfecting our typing skills and our system of word expansions, etc., the faster we can work.  I spent 3 years getting to where there are very few words longer then 4 lett ...
