Which messages are right? The positive or the negative? - Just Thinking

Posted: May 11, 2010

Let's say you have worked for a company and you're happy. You're probably going to post positive things.

Let's say your co-worker got negative feedback from QA or even got fired. The messages that co-worker writes are going to be completely different from yours.

Which messages are right?

or maybe you are from a competitor - MT on break

[ In Reply To ..]
Another reason would be if you work for a competitor and you want to make that company look bad, just because you don't like your competitor.

Neither/both. It's all a matter of opinion and personal - experience. Opinions are neither right nor wrong.

So who are we to believe? - Wondering

[ In Reply To ..]
This is a sincere question. Who are we to believe? Do we believe the person who uses 4-letter words to describe them or the person who says they are having a positive experience with them? I mean, would you apply with a company after seeing them trashed on a message forum? Would you 'consider the source' and give it a try to find out for yourself? Do you think all positive messages are 'plants' and go with the negatives? Would you consider all messages unreliable?

Take into consideration several things ... - sm

This is how I process posts here:

Remember that anyone can post. Anyone can post with multiple personalities or points of view. Posters may not even be MTs. Posters may have nothing to do with this work. Posters may have a personal vendetta.

What is being said? Does the post contain detailed or more specific complaints or praises? Or are they generalities? General statements are completely ignored by me. More detailed complaints or praises I read.

Think about what is being said - does it seem logical? If it is a complaint, is it something that could logically be just an error or a pattern? For example, if a poster says that their pay check was late 4 times last year, that's credible and shows a pattern. If they say their check is late "all the time" - generality - I don't care to read more. But remember that with pay errors they happen everywhere. Maybe the poster didn't report their time or lines appropriately. Maybe there was a problem with the pay cycle. Errors DO happen. You cannot avoid them. But if companies do not pay on time (stating they will pay as soon as possible) that is something to consider.

Is the complaint about a company process or about how a manager treats them? Remember there are also personal perspectives there, too. Maybe this personality doesn't match well with the manager's personality or vice versa. Maybe a poster doesn't understand how the process is supposed to work so they don't get a good result.

In the long run, you have to just take this all lightly and find out for yourself. But make sure you don't take it all too seriously. Anyone can say anything about anyone.

I do not that all positive posts represent company plants, etc. I myself have had positive experiences at companies others say are horrible. It's just that overall this is a negative board and birds of a feather flock together. It's much easier to draw negative attention than positive attention. Also, not every MT in the world knows about this place. There maybe only 10 posters but 150 posts by those same 10 posing as different posters.

In my career and reading this board, I have never ever made a decision based on what I read here. I don't go looking for opinions on chat boards about potential jobs/employers. I research with the Better Business Bureau, etc. I ask questions I want to get answers on in the interview.

I appreciate your message. It makes sense.

plants either neg or pos - mt

I approach this situation as I do with any other online "reviews" just like I would if I was looking for a review of a travel destination or resort property. I look at the overwhelming majority of responses from a few different sites concerning the same property. If most are positive or negative, I take that into consideration. Think of it as looking for the "average" overall experience to make an informed decision, then hope for the best.

Unfortunately the same people go from place to place - See message

You can tell by their wording that it's the same people going from forum to forum. So while it looks like lots of people, which would condemn that company as bad, it's really just one really angry person who is mad because QA said her work isn't improving or her boss told her she either shapes up or loses her job or she didn't get the account she wanted to work on. It could be someone who got fired or reprimanded or it actually could be someone with a legitimate complaint. When they make it in a tacky manner though, they don't sound credible. When they post in anger, they also don't sound credible.

There was a man sitting in front of a store in his town. A man walked up to him and said, "We are thinking of moving here. What kind of people live in this town?" The first man replied, "What kind of people live in the town you came from?" "Well" said the visitor, "the people there were very nice and freindly. We really loved the town." The wise old man replied, "Those are the same kind of people that live in this town too. You will really like it here.

The next day another man came up to the gentleman and asked the same question. His reply was the same, "What kind of pople live in the town you came from?" "Well," said the second visitor, "the people there were mean and unfreindly, that is why we are moving." "Well," said the wise old man, "those are the same kind of people who live in this town. You would probably hate it here too."

The moral is, MOST of the companies are what you make of them. If you are an unhappy person you will hate it no matter where you go. I know this is an oversimplification, but it has some merit.

Here's the thing.... - MT2020

I have lots of friends in this field, and pretty much I'm the only one who even bothers to come onto this site. They all think it is just too negative up here. And I see why.

I would think that if you need a job, and someone finally calls you, that you won't turn down an opportunity to get a job, and you will try it out for yourself, and not depend on what you see here. You can never go by anyone else's experiences.

This is merely a sounding board, and looking at the posts above, you never know why a person posts. Sad to think someone not even in this field could come here and just post whatever they want. I never even thought of that!

I'm trying to think why I even come here, and honestly its to see whats for sale in the classifieds, to see the latest of what going on at my MTSO, to get "opinions" on those things, and thats pretty much it. Oh, and of course to always look on the job board to see what's new. Always looking for something to better myself. And to vent of course LOL. You guys are the only ones who know what the heck I'm talking about. You're like a support group to me.

Basically, you have to try it yourself. I would never let someone tell me a company is no good. I would have to try it myself, just like with anything else.

Like anything else, I would say form your own opinion if you are in the position to do so, otherwise take them face value.

About people's different opionions... - jm0405

I take into consideration that someone might like a job with a company and another hates it - they might have different bosses, different accounts, different platforms. So...one might be hating life stuck on a program that doesn't pay well with 85% ESL and a 24/7 PMS-suffering boss. The other might be on an all-American family practice deal, great platform, outstanding supervisor. Two people can have very different experiences within the same company. Same goes for QA - some QA people are outstanding/others are awful. Everyone is different.

What I look for in order to draw conclusions about a company are the following:
1. Do you get paid on time?
2. Do your checks bounce?
3. Are your paychecks accurate?
4. Any benefits?
5. Work flow is good, bad?
6. How often do you run out of work?
7. Line rates.
8. Get paid for spaces or not?
9. Line rate counter is accurate?

As you see, I don't judge a company according to the people in it as much as the nitty gritty that boils down to one concept - CAN I MAKE A DECENT LIVING THERE? Anybody can work with a company. Not enough teamwork? Create it - come up with ideas and suggestions to make it happen. Want more communication? Make suggestions. Any of us can create change and make any company a positive experience if we choose to. People can be dealt with and people can change. Paydays, theivery, decent wages, sweat shop fees....Sigh...those don't change much if people remain quiet.

In reading opinions, take the quality stuff to heart and leave the rest of the baggage at the door.

Pretty good message. - Thanks for posting

I have only one exception I would take to your excellent message. I know an MT who posted everywhere she could that her employer was despicable, she didn't get paid, etc. It turned out that she had been paid. She was let go for an attitude problem, was bent out of shake and trying to get even.

So yes to everything you wrote. There are state laws to take care of payroll issues and I wouldn't hesitate to make sure those are enforced for companies that do those sorts of things. If only one person reports on a message board (or on many message boards) about not getting paid, the jury would still be out for me just in case it's someone with a vendetta. :)

Excellent message. I'm glad you posted. Those are great comments.
