Two completely different type of job offers..HELP! - jj

Posted: Jun 07, 2011

I have had two job offers this morning and they are two completely different scenarios.  1st offer...80% VR 20% ESL 8 cpl typing 5 cpl VR, new program to learn.  2nd offer...100% straight typing 25% ESL 8.5 cpl typing, program already experienced on. Between VR editing and straight typing options, which is going to give me more money.   I know this board is going to be full of both opinions, but will read them all.    I'm not revealing the companies because I don't want this to be a bash fest.  Thanks.

Do both jobs pay for spaces?
Depending on the VR platform and once you learn the account, it is possible to do very well with VR, and less strain on the hands. There are many factors, of course, to consider, include the clarity of those dictating and if "ESL" percentage includes just plain bad dictators. Some companies group the bad dictators with the ESL when estimated ESL percentage. At some companies "ESL" just means ESL.

I love the EditScript platform for VR.

for me it would be a no-brainer - sm

I detest VR so I would go with the straight typing. No program retraining, so you hit the ground running.

When I've worked VR, I found it to be much harder on my creeping carpal tunnel problems. But worse, it drove me bonkers correcting stupid errors for a nonthinking machine. I'd go to great lengths to help edit a new MT, but not a machine. I could also go much faster straight typing than all the editing garbage and cumbersome highlighting and codes involved. If and when I cannot find straight transcription work, I'll give up the ghost, so to speak.

I recently took a straight typing job - anon

...and I'm glad I did. Even with learning new software, new specs, and new dictators, I'm making 25% more than I did on VR on a platform I'd used for several years - this after only 1 full pay period.

I know some people do really well with VR, but for me I found that I had a harder time concentrating on VR than I do when I have to type every word. Deeper concentration, less distraction, translates to more production and more $ for me.

But, that's just 1 person's experience.

I would go with door #2. (sm) - MT Wordz

(unless it's Medquist. If it is, I would read the Medquist board thoroughly, from top to bottom, and then make an informed decision).

Straight Typing - Type While You Can.

one more question...thanks for the responses so far - jj

the one company doing straight transcription is requiring 7500 lines per pay period 1st-15th, etc. I only work 5 days per week at 4 hours per night. I figured it up at 170-185 lines per hour. Do you guys normally average that? I have been an MT a long time, but I don't guess I've really ever sat down and figured it out. I've never had a goal to have to meet, just typed and at the end of the pay period usually had what I needed. Is this do-able or am I going to have to up my working hours from 4 each night to 5 or 6? Sorry to sound so newbie, because I'm not, just having worked for the local hospital for so long didn't have to know how many lines I typed each night.

I used to average about 200 lph straight typing. - Now on the fabulous

Speech Wreck, I get about 150 (maybe).

Take the straight typing -- absolutely - No question about it

Job Offers
Apr 19, 2012

I would be wary of job offers that expect you to test with multiple files.  I would be suspicious that this is simply how they get a lot of work done when they are short handed.  It's ridiculous to have to take such rigorous testing, especially when they are so picky about the length of time employed as an MT.  If the company is only considering those who have been MTs for 9 years or more, why such rigorous testing??  Sounds fishy to me. ...

2 Job Offers
Nov 06, 2013

Just received 2 job offers and am going back and forth on which one to accept. One is from SoftScript and the other is from Saince, both PT, both offer benefits once I go FT with them...same hours for both. Anyone have input on either company, positive or negative?....hopefully mostly positive? I have 2 days to figure this out. I know it's my decision, but I thought maybe reading some opinions might help me lean one way or the other. TIA ...

Plenty Of Job Offers
Dec 01, 2010

So here is a blindly obvious question. With all of the job ads on this site, who is getting hired? Are they actually real jobs that are being posted by "real" people who actually need MT work done? Are any of you applying and getting these jobs. I have found that there is NEVER a shortage of MT jobs to apply for. There are ALWAYS ads on several sites soliciting the help of both experienced and newer MT's. As many MT's that are on this site I think I would here a few more success s ...

More Jobs & Offers? (sm)
Apr 03, 2014

It seems there have been more jobs posted this week.  After only hearing from one company in the two months I've been searching for work I got two more offers to test and one possible offer on a job in the last two days.  I'd like to know i others have noticed this increase in work or if it's just coincidence.  It seems many lost work after the beginning of the year, so wondering if the providers had a rude awakening with unedited reports? ...

Two Offers On My Table
Jun 05, 2014

About 3 years ago I was offered a position outside of home in a new medical practice, new doc in town.  They made me so many promises and offered so much, but long story short, I took the job, left my home MT job of 12 years with "big M co".  It was NOT a good move.  Mean doc who left all office decisions to his manager, who was fresh out of high school and a personal friend of his family...  There was constant firing and hiring going on. Last month, it was my turn.  ...

Job Offers: 0.04 / 0.05 Cents Per Line
Jul 30, 2010

Hello all.. this will be my first real job.. I've applied at several places, taken the tests, sent in resumes... and now I'm getting calls with job offers. These people are company owners who sound very nice and legitimate, but what I'm being offered sounds pretty low.  The first company says: 0.04 cents per line, and the second one says they pay 0.05 cents.  The second company says they pay by the "byte" rather than by the line.  You take the total number of bytes ...

I Heard That MQ Offers A CMT Differential? Are You Kidding Me?
Jul 25, 2011

Why do I find it hard to believe that they would actually give a shift diff for ANYTHING.  They are in the business of reducing/cutting/taking AWAY not giving, especially if they really don't need to.  Does anyone here actually get a CMT differential or know that there is one?  Do you think it is actually worth it?  I hate ADHI but I do like to EAT and with these pay cuts, that is getting harder to do! Completely Fed Up!
Jun 28, 2012

I am so sick of these dictations that are less than 60 seconds long, pay from .08 to .24 cents each that require 3 minutes of unpaid work to set up. This means I am only paid for one third of my time working, and that is if all their resource-hog software just happens to be working right without locking up or generation another error mesasage requiring another 5 minutes unpaid time to go through the "start ANOTHER IT ticket" process. I think out only hope is to keep filling letting their da ...

Completely Demoralized
Nov 30, 2012

I am on a team that does editing only on one specific platform (although there are many versions of it).  We recently had schedule changes.  Prior to the schedule changes, I had work.  Now...not so much.  They DOUBLED the amount of editors on accounts that were already overstaffed.  I am completely and utterly disheartened by this.  I was, until this point, ready to stay with this company for as long as it took for them to work things out.  What a demoralizing ...

Completely Confused About
May 16, 2014

Can you qualify for that weekly based on, I guess the previous week? Or something? I got a very unusual surprise - MORE pay than I expected, rather than less (which is the usual), and realized somehow I had qualified for production even though I thought I was out, thinking that was a 3 month thing too, so wasn't even trying, just trying to get more lines since I had lost out, I thought, on all bonuses. So can someone confirm production bonus is based on last week's QA post audit - or ...

Work Is Almost Completely Gone
