Plenty of job offers - Where are they going?

Posted: Dec 01, 2010

So here is a blindly obvious question. With all of the job ads on this site, who is getting hired? Are they actually real jobs that are being posted by "real" people who actually need MT work done? Are any of you applying and getting these jobs. I have found that there is NEVER a shortage of MT jobs to apply for. There are ALWAYS ads on several sites soliciting the help of both experienced and newer MT's. As many MT's that are on this site I think I would here a few more success stories from ads right here on this site, but I don't. Why?

Really - They are going to Perception?

Thanks for the thoughtful reply.

LOL! - Perception

It's just your perception. The jobs are being filled. I've spoken with people who've been hired.

So, it's your perception that there are jobs but seemingly not being filled. There's also a lot of job hopping going on with people applying and then realizing the fit just wasn't right once they got started.

Remember, MT stars is a teeny tiny piece of the MT world. And the people on there that chronically say they can't find work or can't get hired, one would have to surmise there's a really, REALLY good reason for that. Time to separate the posers from the real thing.
I guess that is true - One part
[ In Reply To ..]
By making the statement that I did, yes that is what my "perception" is. But that is what "I" am looking at so how could it not be. It was a question mainly based on this site so yes it was narrow in scope but still a valid question non the less. So to turn directly to you, or anyone in particular, for specifics: Are you a long time, same job person or are you one of the masses you speak of jumping back and forth testing the proverbial waters searching for the higher dollar, which in turn is causing the newer MT's to not even get their foot in the door only to quit for greener pastures a month later? If that is going on a lot, especially at this site, I would think that would shy some employers away to hiring people from this site, do you think? Remember, these are just questions, not personal attacks. I don't know you. Anyone can answer them.

I know one new grad who just got 3 job offers and another that just got 1 - So the jobs are there

[ In Reply To ..]
That's two success stories that I know of personally. From what I heard about those jobs, they sounded pretty good, although one of them was part-time work and another one had unusual hours.

I am a new grad...I've had 4 offers and - plenty of other nibbles as well...

I have had all of my offers from smaller companies I found online that don't necessarily advertise anywhere. Most of those were from places that let me test without experience on my resume. Once they could see that I was ready to work, the offers came.

Of course, I did go to one of the big three, so that didn't hurt me at all either. ;-)

Offers - Not a newbie

I've had offer from companies who advertise on this board but chose to take an on-site MT gig instead.

Ok, - Hopefully more will chime in.

Thanks for the responses. I just thought it would be interesting to hear some actual hires on this site, from ads on this site. I have applied to my share to no avail, for whatever reason. From what I gather the responses are, the pay wasn't enough for experienced MT's to settle for, or newbies tested but just didn't have what they were looking for. You would think there would be a middle ground in there somewhere with alot more people getting hired. Just my thought.

Most MTs don't visit at all, or at least don't hang around when they do. - Many just come to look for a job or

check a company out, then move on until the next time. But whether anyone is very hired, just note the number of hits each posting gets these days--! They all get hires.

I have it on very good authority... - Anonymoso

... with at least one frequently-advertising company, here's what happens.

People apply, and their experience level isn't what the company is looking for.

People apply, successfully test, get job offer, turn it down.

People apply, successfully test, get job offer, get hired, begin training, and wash out of training for any number of reasons. Position is re-advertised.

People apply, successfully test, get job offer, get hired, train successfully, and go on to succeed.

nice to see common sense again. NM - anonity

Job hopping explains some of it, at least for me - Happy MT Robin

[ In Reply To ..]
I went for a FT employee position with a company whose ad is at the top of this job board all the time back at the end of May. Had MANY, MANY signs from God that it was a bad idea that I ignored. I actually wanted to go with a company that had VR while I was still working PT as an IC so I could go through the learning curve and still have some income and this company has 2 of the better platforms. Ended up making minimum wage for June and July and came perilously close to a pre-foreclosure status and am still trying to catch everything up that needs to be caught up. Lesson learned. Moved on to another employer who didn't advertise on this board, but on another well known MT job board and have been very happy with them since the end of July. So, yeah, people do get hired from these ads. Also, interestingly enough, the employer I ended up with is rarely mentioned here. It's one of the reasons I thought they might be good - no news is good news - and happily, it turned out to be true.

Was with a company who advertises elsewhere now and again for a couple of years but decided the micromanaging was driving me nuts and put my resume out there. Accepted 2 positions (bird in the hand and all that). Quickly realized one was NOT a good idea. Really enjoyed the second one until they revealed I wasn't paid for spaces. Like you, ended up very close to homelessness, still working my way out, but was referred to another company by another MT, one I've seen advertise rarely. Love LOVE it. It's the perfect fit for me now.

IMO, networking is also a great way to get a job w/o having to go through so many "auditions."

Plenty Of Work?
Sep 30, 2012

I will be starting second shift, Sunday through Thursday, with Nuance.  I have not given notice yet to the company that I am currently working for because I'm thinking of hanging onto them in case there is a shortage of work with Nuance.  Anybody else work this shift?  How is the workflow?  I've read a lot about people not being able to meet the full-time requirements to receive benefits because there simply is no work.  Is this true?  I'm a single mo ...

Plenty Of Work
Jan 26, 2013

Today I have had plenty of work without having to jump around all over the place.  I enjoy working at MModal.  They have been good to me and I have been fortunate to have supervisors who will work with me and I can work with them.  I feel very fortunate to have a job right now when so many others are out of work and cannot find them.  In the last 6 months, I have only had 1 day when there were no jobs available.  Within a couple of hours, my supervisor called and asked me to work on an acc ...

If You Want Plenty Of Work Try Focus
Feb 10, 2010

They have taken on a couple dozen new accounts this year. They are a huge company and use Escription and Dictaphone Extext. They are owned by Dictaphone so rest assured they will have work when other companies are running out. The team leads are in America now, not in India. I would rather work for them and know I will get my lines and get paid than to make zero on another job because I'm pouting about working for a company that sends work to India. Just a FYI. ...

Silent Type MTs Plenty Of Work
Aug 21, 2012

I was hired and told there was plenty of work.  I could get all the pages I wanted.  I am seeing a patten of only 1-2 days a week where  I get work and the other days it just trinkles in.  Is the the normal pattern for the work flow??  If so, I may have to swim out of this stream real fast.  Any info you would be willing to share with me would be appreciated.  I left my last job because of low work volume but was getting more than this.  I came to Silent Type because I was promised pl ...

Job Offers
Apr 19, 2012

I would be wary of job offers that expect you to test with multiple files.  I would be suspicious that this is simply how they get a lot of work done when they are short handed.  It's ridiculous to have to take such rigorous testing, especially when they are so picky about the length of time employed as an MT.  If the company is only considering those who have been MTs for 9 years or more, why such rigorous testing??  Sounds fishy to me. ...

2 Job Offers
Nov 06, 2013

Just received 2 job offers and am going back and forth on which one to accept. One is from SoftScript and the other is from Saince, both PT, both offer benefits once I go FT with them...same hours for both. I know it's my decision, but I thought maybe reading some opinions might help me lean one way or the other. TIA ...

Thinking Of Applying At Synernet, Plenty Of Work??
Nov 12, 2013

I am so tired of trying to find that "perfect" fit for a company to work for.  Good companies are so few and far between and I just want to finally find a fair place.  It seems like the only companies left are MModal and Nuance and I wouldn't work for them for anything.  So, before I apply for Synernet, how are things there?    Thanks :) ...

More Jobs & Offers? (sm)

It seems there have been more jobs posted this week.  After only hearing from one company in the two months I've been searching for work I got two more offers to test and one possible offer on a job in the last two days.  I'd like to know i others have noticed this increase in work or if it's just coincidence.  It seems many lost work after the beginning of the year, so wondering if the providers had a rude awakening with unedited reports? ...

Two Offers On My Table
Jun 05, 2014

About 3 years ago I was offered a position outside of home in a new medical practice, new doc in town.  They made me so many promises and offered so much, but long story short, I took the job, left my home MT job of 12 years with "big M co".  It was NOT a good move.  Mean doc who left all office decisions to his manager, who was fresh out of high school and a personal friend of his family...  There was constant firing and hiring going on. Last month, it was my turn.  ...

Job Offers: 0.04 / 0.05 Cents Per Line
Jul 30, 2010

Hello all.. this will be my first real job.. I've applied at several places, taken the tests, sent in resumes... and now I'm getting calls with job offers. These people are company owners who sound very nice and legitimate, but what I'm being offered sounds pretty low.  The first company says: 0.04 cents per line, and the second one says they pay 0.05 cents.  The second company says they pay by the "byte" rather than by the line.  You take the total number of bytes ...
