Today's medical transcription - Mgc

Posted: Oct 09, 2011

As an old school transcriptionist, it pains me more and more to turn in shoddy work in order to make production.  No longer can I take the time I need to turn in a document up to my standards and still be able to make the production demanded of me.  As soon as I can, I will quit and not look back.  I'm tired of working under a stopwatch for wages that are laughable.

I know how you feel - sm

I have been doing this kind of work since I got out of high school. I used to take so much pride in my work. Now, I get through it as fast as possible. I still try to proofread but I'm sure things are slipping past me. I just don't care anymore. It's really hard to be this way because I am a conscientious employee but I have had enough. I am also looking for another job and can't wait to go. Good luck to you.

Some fields, especially in good times, have more money - to spend on the niceties we love. Maybe

[ In Reply To ..]
look for one of those, like the entertainment industry, because medicine's always been a tighter one moneywise, and of course really, really bad now. Or if you want to stay in medicine, maybe look at very lucrative private medical practices for ones that insist on excellence in grammar and punctuation and are also actually willing to pay good people well. I'm afraid our falling tide is sinking most boats, tho. Good luck.

I'm looking for something outside of this field, but I wouldn't mind working in-house somewhere if the conditions were right. Trouble is that I love or used to love this work.

I'm 58, and my body will no longer let me sit and type literally under a stopwatch. It's demoralizing, and I'm about an inch away from letting management know exactly how I feel.

I'll make it somewhere else. Just wanted to vent. These conditions are intolerable, and I don't intend to stress over it one more damned minute!

Best of luck to all of you who feel the same!

I completely agree - LisaABR

I, too, am not putting in the time I used to for perfection and completely accuracy. I'm not being compensated enough anymore... truth hurts, too bad. Drop me from 11 cents per line to 7 and ultimately 6 soon, and sweethearts, you're going to get what you pay for. Bottom line.

This coming Saturday, Oct. 15, is the perfect - sm - Cranberry

[ In Reply To ..]
day to show our "wonderful" MTSO's how we feel about their greed, which comes at OUR expense. Sat. Oct. 15 is a GLOBAL "Occupy Together" action. People worldwide are going to join together to protest the way corporate greed has enslaved, and is now exterminating, and entire class of people, the Middle Class.

If you're scheduled to work on Sat., as I am, then what better day to simply refuse to turn on your PC and log in to your company's website? Instead, CALL IN SICK (or better, let them just wonder where you are), find your nearest protest, which on Sat. shouldn't be too hard, and give yourself a much-deserved day off, to show the corporte world we're mad as h***, and we're not going to take this anymore.

I'm as a progressive as the next gal, I really am, but I cannot help wondering how this affects PATIENT CARE?

I could not care less about the fate of the greedy MTSOs out there (MQ and Transcend, are you listening?) but I do care about patients. Since I am retired, it really does not affect me, and I am, for the record all FOR the Wall Street occupation, but why punish innocent patients?

I rather doubt it'll put a dent in patient care, which - is already lacking to begin with.

[ In Reply To ..]
And if you're retired, then count yourself among a lucky few in this economy, and especially in this profession. Most of us will never realize that dream, and will have to work until we die.

If a STAT report comes in on Saturday, it'll likely go to India. Which is one of the things OWS wants to happen - the end of offshoring good middle class jobs.

okay, you are mad - What are your suggestions for improvement

[ In Reply To ..]
Real, practical suggestions. Not just "we need to get rid of the MTSOs." That ship has sailed. What specific changes do you want?

I want a substantial financial penalty for - offshoring jobs and a SM

[ In Reply To ..]
substantial financial reward for keeping jobs here. Nothing else would get their attention. Greed has no morals and no loyalty.
Exactly what I think, too. All they understand is - money. The solution is simple: sm
[ In Reply To ..]
When it costs a company more to hire offshore workers, due to loss of their current perks and tax breaks for doing so, than it does to hire, insure, and pay fairly an American worker, the work will come back where it belongs.

They need to be taxed heavily for offshoring. After all, by doing so, they're taking money out of America's tax base twice: once by hiring workers who pay no State or Federal income taxes, and once again by getting substantial tax breaks for hiring offshore.

Every time they lay one of us off, or starve one of us out of MT, they turn around and hire 2 or 3 Indians. And they get a little perk for each "new job" they've created. The problem is, those "new jobs" they create are not in the USA.

Greedy corporate CEOs should seriously think about changing their game plan to something a little more fair and morally just, while the "99%" movement is still peaceful.
To All They Understand is Money - You are so right!!
[ In Reply To ..]
You are hitting the nail right on the head. The MT business is not the only profession guilty of this practice. There are so many off-shored jobs, taken from middle class Americans. There have been surveys regarding the number of jobs totally, but even the government can't figure out how many it really is because companies will not fess up to a real number. However, if they changed this practice, they would certainly notice the $$$$$ start rolling in.

The tax revenue that you mentioned should be calculated and addressed. Not only are We The People not receiving the state tax, the federal tax, Medicare tax, funding social security, we are also having to pay for many Americans' unemployment due to this very fact!! All of this would put a big dent toward economic recovery - which should be called job recovery or tax recovery. It hurts every American whether your job is directly affected by it or not.

This practice has robbed jobs from many of the middle class, now forcing them into the lower class category. All of the baby boomers are retiring. How can we afford their Medicare and Social Security, welfare programs, and unemployment. There are not enough young middle class people with jobs, paying taxes, to be able to afford this, taking care of the old and young alike. It simply will not work, and I believe we are coming to realize that and something has got to change. Putting an end to all the perks of off-shoring is certainly a good step in the right direction.
Not to mention what it has done to wages in the U.S. - See message
[ In Reply To ..]
I read in a government study somewhere, I think in 2007, that a survey was attempted to know the number of off-shored jobs. It was never definite, but they estimated it would equal the population in 3-4 small U.S. states.
Sad to think that in that respect, the US has already - "sold" a couple of its states to - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
other countries. And now we're poised to start selling off to China.

All of that is just ONE reason why, as a person who has never attended a protest, or even given a darn in the past about other rallies for change, I am finally getting up off my fat posterior and putting it in gear.

I plan to be at one of the big-city protests planned this weekend. Will I change the world? Not likely. But at the very least, I can use the exercise.

Medical Transcription At Home To Become A Medical Scribe?

Has anybody left medical transcription at home to become a medical scribe?  I have an opportunity to do so but there aren't any scribes currently in my area and I don't know anyone who has worked as a scribe before.  The scribe position starting pay is almost double what I make as an MT per hour so it is very tempting, I just don't know much about it. ...

I'm a 2011 MT grad who posted not long ago looking for advice.  While googling MT companies to apply to, I found some non-medical transcription services, namely one that transcribes dialogue from a video for production/entertainment companies.  This site had instructions and a download to take the test.  What the heck, I'm going to take it and see what happens.  Since MT is practically a dead-end career, I've been trying to come up with ther ways to utilize my ...

Thank You Medical Transcription
Aug 23, 2013

I quit a job a dozen years ago to jump into the "Work At Home" dream.  I had little money, was quite naive, worked from dark to dark with absolutely no help from the small MTSO, who later ripped me off $5,000.  BUT, I learned. After my first experience with "running out of work", I just found more work.  I got unusually lucky and found a job and was MTing again in a few days. That gig gave me nearly 10 years of working for another small MTSO.  I got busy and made tons of mon ...
