Something I just thought about and am wondering - nn

Posted: Oct 05, 2013

I was just on my FB page and get a lot of "political type" posts.  I saw one regarding Catholic priests supposedly not being able to say Mass tomorrow at military installations because they are considered "government subcontractors" and could either be fined or jailed if they violate this order.  I am wondering about the MTs who are contracted for VA accounts, because to my way of thinking, the MTSO and possibly the MT, could face the same consequences.

As an aside, I also saw a post where "O" also shut down part of the ocean off of the Florida Keys, which is considered a national park, thereby preventing commercial fishermen from being able to fish in those waters.

Do you know - that

any of that is actually true? Or was it just rumors intended to further a particular agenda.

Exactly! It's an attempt to discredit via water carriers who repeat junk. - ReallySilly

VA healthcare has NOT been shut down. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
VA healthcare was already funded through fiscal year 2014. There has been no shutdown of healthcare services provided to our Veterans.

Please go to www.va.gov to see what VA services are and are not operational.

Just to note, even if transcription services were suspended, healthcare would not be affected because they have an excellent EHR which allows physicians to enter documentation a number of ways.

Also, if contracted services were suspended, contractors would have been notified. Access to the work would likely have been cut off, as well.

Have you ever researched this junk, or do you just repeat what you read - on FB

[ In Reply To ..]
That's what I get so fed up with -- people who parrot whatever they read or hear without so much as doing some honest research and who don't bother to really use a little logic and common sense. I get flooded with anti-this and anti-that junk from average citizens, which I can then Google, observe sources, and determine for myself what is valid and what is urban legend or just plain propaganda. Please people, think for yourselves and do a little true research!

By the tone of your post, you insinuate that I am stupid, which I am not by no means. I did follow up on both things that were mentioned in my original posts and they are NOT urban legends and have been reported on national news media outlets. This was the first time that I had heard of anything like this and just HAPPENED to see it on FB. Most of the time, I tend to ignore things like this or research them before I would post on such a "hallowed board" as this one.

Then please tell us where you read about the VA - Wondering

[ In Reply To ..]
Please tell us where you read about the VA medical being shut down. Somebody sure forgot to tell my medical center. It has been business as usual. We are happy to be there to serve those who served.

This is, unfortunately, how dangerous rumors get started. I would hate to think that one of our nation's heroes did not seek needed medical care because someone who saw and believed the OP's post discouraged them from doing so.

Your reading comprehension - OP
[ In Reply To ..]
Re-read my post. There was nowhere in my post that the VA or its facilities were mentioned. The only thing mentioned were priests saying mass on "military installations," a TOTALLY different entity from VA facilities. That's one thing that I can't stand is people not reading a post properly and then spouting off, because they didn't take the time to read it before spouting off!
addendum to post above - OP
[ In Reply To ..]
I found the part about the priests very interesting because they are considered "government subcontractors." The article went on to state that they could be fined or imprisoned if they were caught celebrating Mass. It made me think of the MTSOs and MTs whom are considered "subcontractors" and might be subject to the same type of penalties.
I think it is referring to this... - Seems to say VA to me

"I am wondering about the MTs who are contracted for VA accounts, because to my way of thinking, the MTSO and possibly the MT, could face the same consequences."

If that isn't you, then you are not the OP.
Your post - OP
[ In Reply To ..]
Again, if you would read and comprehend. What was meant by that statement is since the priests are considered "subcontractors," then to my way of thinking, this could also apply to MTs and MTSOs whom are also considered "subcontrractors," since you are not directly employed by the federal government and therefore, you or your MTSO would also be considered a subcontractor.
Not similar situations - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
The entire VA healthcare system remains open. It cannot shut down.

In the event that contracts were suspended, no further work would be supplied to the MTSO. If there is no work to do, how can anyone do it?

"I heard"...Instead of "wondering" - why-not

[ In Reply To ..]
do some research? Why waste your/our time making saliva bubbles posting here?

Your post makes absolutely no sense - OP

[ In Reply To ..]
I READ an an article on FB -- therefore, I SAW it and did not HEAR it. When was the last time "wondering" about something was related to one's hearing?

I heard, I saw...it's the same thing - no-facts

[ In Reply To ..]
...and then wonder about what it was you saw or heard? Big waste.

what is the big deal? - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
When someone asks and wonders about a FB post, article, rumor, etc, what is the problem some of you have? Jeez, this board is so full of the "post police" who jump at every chance to be snarky. If you don't see validity in a post, just skip it and move on. Who cares if someone doesn't research before posting?

The OP was just speculating. What's so difficult about politely stating facts to the contrary?

Reply to your post - OP

Thank you for at least seeing part of my point. I did not make the post with trying to stir up trouble. I found the news article on FB interesting and I did research it and it was a LEGIT news article. I felt that if this could possibly happen to Roman Catholic priests, whom I didn't realize were governement subcontractors that it could apply to anyone, including MTs, and MTSOs who are also subcontractors. I know many years ago, you could go onto the government jobs website and apply for a position as a medical transcriptionist; however, I believe this is no longer the case.

I have noticed lately with this post and other posts, how people tend to take things out of context so to speak. It's almost as if they take a keyword and that's all they see and pounce on it -- NOTHING in my original post said anything about VA facilities. The point that I was trying to make was that the priests were subcontractors. Certain MTs may have their own accounts with the VA and therefore the government as well as working for an MTSO who may sbe a subcontractor for the government.

To my way of thinking, since Roman Catholic priests were considered nonessential and subject to fines or worse, a medical transcriptionist would also be considered nonessential. You are not directly responsible for patient care, so therefore, you would be considered nonessential.

Again, some of you need to brush up on your reading and comprehension skills before so readily jumping to conclusions. Also, just because an article was on FB doesn't necessarily make it a hoax. I normally would not even come on this board and post something like that and especially from Facebook if I felt it may not have an impact on things. I also noticed a post similar to mine that another MT had posted on the Politics board, so it wasn't only me.

Some clarification - It is not your fault

[ In Reply To ..]
It isn't your fault that you were confused. I am sure you will appreciate the following clarification.

Priests would be either employees or contractors. It is unlikely that they were subcontractors unless there was a parent company of which they were employees. (Priests-R-Us?)

An MT who contracts directly with the VA would be a contractor. To my knowledge, there aren't any of them because they use nationwide contracts with large MTSOs. There are no MT subcontractors because VA contracts with MTSOs do not allow it. They have to be employees.

To your way of thinking, priests were nonessential, so therefore MTs, who were not responsible for patient care, were nonessential.

However, what you did not realize was that no VA medical centers shut down AT ALL. They did not furlough anyone. It had nothing to do with essential or nonessential on an individual basis. It was because the facilities were never a part of the shutdown. That is because their operations are so important, they are funded well in advance in order to avoid this very sort of thing.

I am happy to clarify one more thing. You thought that years ago you could go on a government website to apply for a job as an MT, but you thought it was no longer the case. This is untrue! You can still get MT jobs with the government! They are advertised all the time. Military, Indian Health Service, other federal agencies, and ... yes ... the VA. It is just a matter of finding them. They might call them something other than MT. There are also loads of jobs in medical centers that require little more than medical terminology, keyboarding, and good computer skills. There are a lot of transcription coordinator positions, too. All things that MTs could do!

Sep 02, 2010

I think this was a very large account and they could have divided the MTs who had this as their primary and put them on various other accounts.  Yes, this would have overstaffed those accounts and more MTs would be getting NJA as we all scrambled for what work there was.  Also, this way WMX would not be putting out unemployement for anyone and soon most of us would not have benefits because we couldn't keep our line counts up with NJA all the time.  All in all, looks like the ...

I just realized that no one cares about the quality of medical records anymore.  I have had to go to VR and I am now making anywhere between 4 and 12 dollars/hour.  I guess people care more about the quality of their hamburgers than they do peoples' healthcare. I have started to just send them through.  I don't even really listen to the work.  I look at it and change any major spelling errors, but other than that, what the VR says is what they get.  The fu ...

Could it be that the MModal and Nuance are buying all of these smaller, better MTSOs because they want to limit our employment options?  If MModal (the Q) and Nuance are the monopolizing companies, and an MT who works for them just had all she/he could take, where could she/he go?   Just a thought....   ...

What if we asked for stocks in the company as a benefit?  I know Wal-Mart does this for their employees, because my SIL, who has worked for Wal-Mart for a long time, drew from her stock and traveled a distance and paid for a  birthday party for her 3-year-old grandson and went shopping at our local mall and bought herself a wonderful new set of pots and pans (that new kind that is green and made out of ceramic) and just lived it up more than she could have done otherwise.  Si ...

Wondering About Pay
