Reflecting back on 5 years as MT - tin ear

Posted: Jun 28, 2012

What a ride this has been and not very good. It takes a long time to develop your ear (varies with everyone) and all the while all they do is reprimand you. I once was written up for putting 324 mg of aspirin in a report (like they shorted the patient 1 mg). I have had 5 different employers: bought out twice by the Q, fired once and now finally feeling comfortable, but making far, far less than I thought. Even though I love MT work, I would not enter this field if I knew what I know now. Could there ever be hope that with Obamacare being upheld, they're really going to VALUE us for the 17 million new patients coming in? Especially because medicine now is permeated with ESL and foreign patients (90% of my work) and we are the interface. Just dreaming!

Great post! I could have written it myself! - nm

Nothing is going to change for us until we demand it. We cannot count on anyone to save us. We can no longer dream, wait, wish, or hope for a knight in shining armor to rescue us. Considering the majority of MTs are women, they are counting on us to just continue making them money with our mouths shut. If we would get after these companies with the same vengeance that we would use if someone was taking advantage of our children there would be hell to pay, wouldn't there? So why are we not organized and united and ready to stand up for ourselves?

Because the majority of them like to complain but are too afraid to do anything. - mythoughts

When the majority refuse to work anymore, then these companies have no choice but to change things for the better. I wish every day they'd fire me. In the meantime, I am looking for a non-MT job. Hell, I'm almost willing to work at Wal-Mart. Anything is better than this. This job sucks the life out of me.

Go to your local hospital. Find out what they use for transcription. IF they use a national company or use VR with a big-company for editing, write your local paper. Tell them that the hospital is paying to outsource YOUR job out of the community. Complain bitterly... Network with LOCAL MTs, write letters, talk to the news, explain how this has robbed your community of resources (especially yours) and is simply unnecessary considering you are all willing to work and need to work to support your families and your communities... SHAME the local hospital into reconsidering their actions. Start a company, incorporate with your local transcriptionists, write a proposal to the local hospital. Be ready to go to work. If everyone did this in their communities, a grass roots movement could start. One person cannot do it all. But we all know how to write and are fully capable of writing a letter to the editor explaining our positions. Take it back, one hospital at a time.

Its such a complex issue.. Unionization was our only chance, but years back, though lots of us tried to rally up the MT force, not many bit... our industry has folded for us for myriad reasons, and way too complex and likely too late for us to fix. I know you mean well, but don't kid yourself that anybody really cares, from the local hospitals to even your community. People, as in patients, just do NOT get what we do, or how vital it is to keep our medical records in our country. And the biggest university health systems to the smallest local hospitals honestly do NOT care about quality. They just do not. All anyone cares about is money, bottom line. The quality of work healthcare systems are willing to accept is deplorable, but if they save 5 cents a month, its worth it to them. Its just the way it is, trust me. Disgusting, a shame, a sin, but this is what our industry has become. It could NOT sink to lower levels if it tried, and I have no doubt the bar will sink ever lower, all in the name of cost cutting.

You are spot on, TIREDPRO. About 20 years ago would have been the time to act. That was when we actually had some STABILITY and DECENT PAY. Now folks are so DESPERATE to take ANY job in this employers' market that we are being exploited like crazy.

There is another factor as well: MTs are notoriously difficult -- if not IMPOSSIBLE -- to get organized to do ANYTHING. As someone wisely posted here once, "Herding cats is easier."

My Experience Is 3 Years Old, How Do I Get Back In?
Jan 13, 2011

I worked in transcription for 20+ years. My last job was for 16 years, acute care and lots of specialty experience, ESL, radiology. But, I have not worked for 3 years. I can't seem to get a bite. I want to be a full time employee. I have an explanation for my hiatus on my resume. Also, does it detract because I have a Bachelor's degree listed on my resume? THANKS GUYS ...

Why I Chose To Go Back To MT After Doing Something Else For A Few Years
Nov 20, 2011

I never was one of those people 10-15 years ago who made $60,000/yr. I always got stuck working with a company that didn't allow the use of expander programs. I also was very good at some of the tougher ESL dictation and got more than my share of that, and actually enjoyed it. I always loved doing MT because I have always found it to be interesting. It is hard work though, so after a number of years, I tried something else for a break. I went back because it has advantages that outweighed t ...

You Know With All These Changes Reflecting The Way Spheris Operates, The Payroll Operations, Sm
Jan 07, 2011

the 2-week pay period and now moving the office to the old Spheris office, would make one think that it was Spheris who bought MQ not the other way around.  Why all the changes to their way of doing things?  Why have they not conformed to MQ as a company?  Don't get it! ...

After Years And Years Of Being IC, Obtained Employee Status At A Co. Sm
Nov 26, 2012

Thought that after not having enough work for a couple years now and always chasing work, I'd now have a "real job" as an employee and wouldn't have to worry about a steady paycheck and paying the bills anymore. The reason I thought this was because at the interview and in their professional company emails, they use all the "real job" words:  Shift, scheduled hours, overtime, PTO, benefits, etc.  I felt relieved to finally have a "job." What a big bunch of BS! I was "hired" ...

3 Years. Question: How Many More Years Do You Plan To Be An MT/editor?
Dec 20, 2013

There is much speculation about the field of transcription - how many of us actually plan to be here 5 years, 10 years, 20 years from now. I realize that the field is going to change, which will contribute to your answer. Will there be enough transcriptionists/editors to fill the need in 5 years and in 10 years? Will the industry be forced out of offshoring because of taxes? Will there be a need even for editors if VR gets better? These are all unanswered questions, but my question is, what ...

I Worked For M*Modal A Couple Of Years Ago Or So And I Worked For Medquist Several Years Ago.
Aug 08, 2014

Lately, I've been getting legal notices mailed to my home from I believe the east coast somewhere informing me of a class action lawsuit against M*Modal and inviting me to joint if I have a claim.  I don't think I have a claim, but then again with all the shady practices in this business, I'm not so sure.  I'm just curious what the heck is going on. Anyone care to give me the lowdown? ...

Back To Work After Back Surgery
Aug 23, 2012

Hello, I would like to transcribe from home again. However, I HAVE to get up and walk for a few minutes at least once an hour. You see, I had to have 2 back surgeries in the last 18 months. I've been a transcriptionist for many years and this is my profession. Does anyone have a suggestion what to tell these companies that will hire you to work from home when you have to get up so much? The last company I tried had a "pop-up" box that appeared on my screen if you were up longer than 10 min ...

horrible ESL accounts, horrible teaching facilities with residents who don't know how to dictate.  By the time you get used to them, they're gone.  I have been insulted by taking an enormous pay cut for the over rated, under performing ASR.  Through all of this, I have mostly been happy with my job.  Now, however, I will finally say that I hate MQ.  I hope they lose all their accounts to nice mom and pop people.  I hope they go bankrupt and have to move in ...

Dec 12, 2011

So, got my congratulatory e-mail from medquist today for working here for 18 years as of this month  How ironic . . . I got that e-mail on the same day that I got the call from the Department of Welfare telling me that due to my low income (despite working full time) my kids are eligible for medical benefits from welfare!  I even replied to my "congratulatory" MQ e-mail stating so!  I know some of you will retort with "why stay?" but I have a disabled husband to take care of, ...

believe the crap that this company dishes out to us.  I know 150 lines is achievable because that was the minimum at my last company (bought back, not here by choice!).  My former company, however, did not have a time clock, which took the pressure off if I had a string of difficult reports or extensive referencing because I could work a bit longer to make up the lines if I had to.  I am PT with no benefits, no sick days, no holidays, work Saturdays, and only a few PTO days a ...

After 36 Years -
Nov 16, 2013

Working for Nuance has been horrible since the onset a year ago with immediate pay cut.  Since then it's been one thing and another to make an MT feel imprisoned working for this company.  With their 99% accuracy criteria OR ELSE - very few of us stand a chance of maintaining our jobs.  My job was threatened for not meeting consistent FIESA scores of 99%. COME ON -  we're making half what we used to and now some QA "specialists" come along and arbitrarily "grade our ...

Out Of A Job After 20 Years
Dec 18, 2014

After 20 years, I was put out of business by Nuance taking over the last hopsital I was working for and earning a decent living.  I eventually started working for Nuance in August of this year.  I had such a hard time turning in 1100 lines in 8 hours, significantly down from my average of 250 per hour, and not to mention getting stuck with two hopsitals in Maryland that were very, very difficult with the majority being ESLs.  Sadly, i was let go on December 5th because I could not ...

GETTING OUT OF MT AFTER 28 YEARS
Apr 15, 2015

I to am getting out of MT after over 25 years, the last 10 of those at home.  Yes, I was scared at my age (49), but it feels like the weight of the world is off my shoulders.   I have been offered a "real job" with amazing benefits (holidays, vacation days and sick days), and to the icing on the cake... a better salary than I could ever make in MT. Have Not Had A Raise In 5 Years.
Jul 25, 2011

I am tier III and I still am not at top pay. Today I asked my CCM for a raise and she said she will put in the paperwork. Why do I feel I still will be denied even though I have met all the requirements. More than likely I will be denied because they do not want any MT to make above minimum wage. Also I really feel bad for the MTs who had their pay cut. That is just not right. I notice when I ask why the pay cut the answer is always to level the playing field and to make it fair to the other MT ...

No Raise In 11 Years
Oct 06, 2011

I am an independent contractor with 30 plus years experience, and have worked for the same hospital for 11 years, still at the same rate as when I started.  At the time it was a good rate, now not so much--outside typing service does the overflow easy stuff , we IC's are left with the ESL's, static and more difficult reports.  Know things have changed dramatically in just 11 years.  Also know the onsite transcriptionists (employees)  get a 4% raise most years.  ...
