Question for Owners/Transcription - Lisa

Good morning. I own my own transcription service and would now like to take on a subcontractor to help me as business is good! I charge my clients .15 cents a line, so what do I pay the sub per line? How much is a reasonable amount to make on all the work?

Lisa: Most service owners here pay 8 to 9 cpl. I paid 10 cents per line if dependable and a very good transcriptionist. If still looking for help, consider me! My business went downhill fast in my area. No work right now. So if you need a subcontractor, I am available :)

Carol, how I would love to do that but these docs are still using tapes. I tried to at least get them to go digital last year, but they didn't like it. I actually go pick up tapes. I'm thinking about investing in a call in system. Maybe they'd go for that! You wouldn't happen to be in Louisiana, huh?

Lisa: No. I don't live in Louisiana! Oh how I wish I did. I would love to help you out with your account. Maybe if you get the call-in system or you can convert the tapes to digital, it would be a possibility. I saw somewhere that it was possible to put the micro tapes on the computer in a digital format. I have used "encrypted" e-mail to send voice files and completed documents. There is no cost to you for that. Something to consider! What is your turn-around-time? Anyway...I can send you a resume and my references if you like and you can keep them. That way, if anything changes, you can contact me. Sound like a plan? Oh..could I have your e-mail, or I can give you mine. Thanks..have a good day.

A friend of mine has an office who uses tapes, and she knew how to re-record things to voice files and send them to me. If you're interested, I'll ask her how it's done and maybe the you ladies can "make a deal." Let me know.

Re-recording info:
I use Goldwave and play the tapes to Goldwave through a cord I bought at Radio Shake that goes into the hearing slot of the transcriber and the voice part of the computer. Then I turn on Goldwave and start the recording. When done name it and it saves it. I then email the file.

Can't help with the encrypted email stuff.

doesn't need QAing usually gets a minimum of 10-11, which is equivalent to 8-9 as an employee with benes. You can find newer, less experienced ICs for cheaper, but then you have to either QA their work yourself or hire a QA.

Would someone explain to me how is that this company can legally pay us a lower rate for ASR compared to transcription? After they pushed ASR on me, (said that I wouldn't ever get a 50:50 ratio of ASR to transcription) I am getting mostly ASR work. My pay has dropped significantly. Can they do this? ...

Since the advent of voice recognition and overseas outsourcing, transcription has ceased to be a profession. I will NEVER -- repeat, NEVER make the money I was making as a transcriptionist at a hospital 5 years ago, before we were replaced by VR and cheap outsourcing to India. Now all that's left are transcription companies here in the U.S. that don't want to pay much more, lie to us and tamper with our line counts. GET OUT, GET OUT OF TRANSCRIPTION! ...

It seems that everyone has negative things to say about how employers do not pay MTs what they're worth and how they offshore the easy stuff, but pile on the lousy ESL stuff on the transcriptionists in the States. Too bad there can't be a general strike of U.S. MTs - a day without transcription - just to show how we're needed. It seems to be the only thing employers would understand.
