A community of 30,000 US Transcriptionist serving Medical Transcription Industry
There is a way to “test” the waters to see if you are “rusty” or to determine if you are better suited for Acute Care or Clinic work. Or if you still remember your Radiology or Oncology. Even if you can handle Speech Recognition.
There are many Companies who use MTTEST as their pre-screening testing. Anyone can go to their site and take the tests, even if those companies are not actively advertising an opening.
The only drawback is that you have to go through the first two steps in the process (usually called the “Transcription Skills Assessment” and the “Objective” Exams. If you do not pass either one of those, they will not allow you to go to the actual Transcription portion of the exam. But, these tests are usually short (probably can both be completed in less than 30 minutes), and if you cannot pass the written part, even if you get a Medical Transcriptionist job with a company, QA will probably drive you nuts. So, the more practice you have with the written parts of the exam, the better off you will be when you finally get a job and have to produce reports that QA will not pick apart.
Anyway, if you get to the actual transcription part of the MTTEST exam, you really have two options. You can transcribe the reports and actually send them on to the Company to see if they will contact you with your Test Scores. OR, you can take the tests and then NOT send them. If you just want to know if you can handle that particular type of dictation, you can type it up and then exit the site, without hitting Complete and Send. That way, the company will not get any tests that you worked on. So, if you decide you want to try to get a job with that Company later, after you have brushed up on your skills, they will not have an old test to compare and you will start off fresh.
Below is a partial list of the Companies that use MTTEST (I am sure there are many, many more, and feel free to add to the list when you run across them). Also listed is the types of reports they have sample tests for.
If you want to see if you can handle a particular specialty, just pick a Company that is not high on your list of where you would like to work, and take their test – to submit or not – depends on you. That way, you will know where you need more work.
By the way, before you take the test, if you are worried about what kind of format to put the test in, look up the Company’s website. A lot of them will mention in their “Career” or “Employment” link information if they follow the AAMT/AHDI Book of Style. That will give you a heads-up as to how they probably expect their transcription tests to be done.
Good Luck. Hope you are able to pass the tests with flying colors and get the job you are looking for.
Feel free to Email me, if you have specific questions. I will try to answer them, to the best of my knowledge.
