Okay, so here's the question: Would you hire an MT who regularly uses bad words? - or does it matter when you are hiring

Posted: Dec 28, 2011

I am convinced that many of the MTs who are having a really bad time being able to keep a job, and can't find any other kind of work in any other field, are rejected because of their language abuse. If you were hiring, would it be an issue for you if the person you are interviewing is sarcastic and rude or uses bad language and/or vulgarity? Does it matter to you at all? Here's another 'what if' for you. What if that person is a fast MT and has really good skills. What if there were no other applicants that were qualified for the job? What if there were? Does it matter to you? Could this be part of the problem for the failure of some MTs?

More important than the other questions, does the vulgarity and sarcasm represent more than just words? Does it represent character flaws, possible work problems just waiting to happen, or would you prefer such a person because you are comfortable with them and they mirror your own communication skills?

No, I would not hire an MT - Old Pro

who uses vulgar language. I think it is a reflection of class and character. Sarcasm is another thing. If it is used intelligently among peers, that is one thing, and it is all right if everyone is on the same page with it. Sarcasm is actually a great literary tool. (Have you ever read Voltaire, either in the original French or in English? Try CANDIDE for starters.) However, if sarcasm is used to hurt or belittle others, it is not okay. I have actually turned away MTs because of vulgar language. People who speak like that are not the caliber of people I want to work with. Sorry--take it to the pool hall. :)-

Oh, and about the pool hall - Old Pro

[ In Reply To ..]
Yes, I do play pool and think it is a great hobby.

I wouldn't put up with it for a minute - Have Done Hiring

[ In Reply To ..]
I've done lots of hiring over the years, MTs and others. Never would I hire someone who is tacky or vulgar. If it surfaced later, I wouldn't keep them. I want to work with people who are honest and sincere in their dealings with others.

I agree with you. I have also hired extensively, and would not put up with vulgar language that seems to be acceptable anymore. Employees are representative of a business and many times they are the first impression an outsider has of that business (obviously depending on their contact). I also used "bad" words on occasion, but very, very infrequently. The way a person speaks, dresses and carries themselves says quite a bit about their character, education, background, etc., whether we like it or not. I would not want vulgar language to be the common denominator of any gathering I am part of, rather intelligent discussion. However, to each his own; it is what makes the world turn! :)

Hiring an MT - Anne

Well, I must first say that anyone who uses vulgar language in an interview is really not qualified for anything. I mean what kind of interpersonal skills would this person have? As far as an MT or anyone really using vulgar language, I really cannot answer your question accurately without knowing the entire picture, i.e. what was this MT dealing with? My guess is that if an MT or anyone was working somewhere especially for a long time and then there was a 'problem' with language from the person then perhaps there was more to the situation than just an issue with the MT. Was this person (MT) being provoked or ignored by office staff? Was this person (MT)'s work problems not taken seriously or as not 'real' or something like that? I think that many times a person's environment causes them or pushes them to do things that would otherwise not happen, such as with MT if pay was involved. Was this person (MT)'s pay being affected by whatever was going on and was this happening more than one week? I think that people react to survival and I would guess that any inappropriate 'communication' reaction by this MT or anyone is a response due to survival. People need to pay their bills and put food on the table, etc. If the ability to meet these needs is taken away or reduced and the person/MT feels they are not being taken seriously or listened to, I would say that they may display 'environmental' behavior. As the cliche goes ' it would make a preacher curse.'

I have a terrible potty mouth and can be sarcastic - in some instances, but not

[ In Reply To ..]
when it has to do with my job. So, if you are referring to the way people act on a public forum, I believe this is probably much different than the way they act to their employers. I would not in any way assume that someone acting rude on here is necessarily rude to their employers.

I can be a big cut up and let the words role and be extremely sarcastic, joking and also when people think they know a lot more than they do.

I could really care less if an MT working from home uses curse words. Would not bother me. Now, if I were a boss and they were cursing at me, that would be a different story.

No, that behavior would disqualify them - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I would be unable to select a candidate who used foul language, or was sarcastic or rude. That type of behavior is prohibited by my organization's employee code of conduct. No amount of technical skill can excuse inappropriate interpersonal behavior. We focus on providing exceptional customer service. Our customers are our patients, our staff, and our suppliers. If you have issues with that, you will not fit into our organization.

I think a lot of MTs ended up in MT because they were unable to handle jobs that required good interpersonal skils. Some of the most abusive bullies I have seen were MTs. Coders run a close second.

Well, the reason I dont want to work in house is - PAMT

[ In Reply To ..]
because I dont have good interpersonal skills especially when coworkers seem to think they need to know every aspect of your life. That is one thing I wont tolerate and that goes on all the time in companies. Office politics are ridiculous and the backstabbing and other BS that goes on is something I wont tolerate and that is why I work at home. I dont need that extra aggravation in my life nor do I intend to tiptoe around people to keep the peace. My feeling always was get a life and let other people alone.

Not wanting to work in house either - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
Agree completely with backstabbing and pettiness. Always seemed to me if they had more to do they would have a whole lot of less time to fuss over everyone else. Just too exhausting for me. I've got enough stress without catering to someone, who like you said, really just needs to get a life!

I agree with your comments about working in an office setting, - IAMT

[ In Reply To ..]
however, I worked as an MT in-house before and the first week with this crew was unbelievable. After the morning fashion show and comments of such, it was soon break time and they all descended into the lounge. The conversations on their return were so unbelievable including asking me to give to someone's kid's balloon bouquet cuz little Johnny was sick with the flu or someone's dog had the measles. Went home the first weekend and regrouped, went back that Monday and for 5 years just arrived, put my headphones in, logged in and worked. Eventually asked for a corner cubicle which I got, got paid by the line and had the highest line count and paychecks and for a while offered to work weekends when I was there alone in lieu of a weekday when everyone was there. Think they all thought I was antisocial, but I was there to work and go home when I had an adequate line count and my hours were met. The company then offered us a chance to go home if we had our own computer, jumped at that and was much happier. If I want to socialize, I have friends. I was not rude or insensitive to real crises that occurred among my coworkers, just didn't go to work to make friends. I have friends and can and socialize outside the office setting and do exactly that.

I've been seeing more and more MTs e-mailing bosses with crude language - and of course they lose their jobs too

[ In Reply To ..]
I've been on some MT groups where MTs tell about what they wrote to their supervisor before they got fired. They also say way too much about their employers using social networking like Facebook, etc. They may just think they are using bad language in social situations, but business is business. It gets back to the employer. I'm amazed at some of the vulgarity that people think is acceptable. It never was and still isn't unless you're in a group of friends who all talk that way.

I have a friend who has a business. That friend uses horrible language. I don't know how many accounts have been lost for that reason. There are places I won't go with that friend. It's also beginning to be unpleasant just to be in the same room. Wish I could help, but I don't think change is possible in this case.

WHAT?? - MT2

[ In Reply To ..]
Do you think MTs go into an interview and curse or use "bad" words (sorry your phraseology nearly made me pee my pants).

I curse, well, not curse, and I don't hear it as vulgar but I have been known to drop the F-bomb on a weekly/daily/hourly basis. I have enough sense, however, to speak professionally when it's called for. I'm fast, I'm good, and I use foul language....that means I should not be hired?

Some people are so judgmental I'm not sure how you get past your own mirrors sometimes.

MT2 - Old Pro

[ In Reply To ..]
Not being "judgmental"--being realistic. My ears are not garbage cans for your or anyone else's F-bombs. I would not hire you, sorry.

I don't choose to listen to garbage either - Would not hire you

Employers have the right to choose the environment they want - and

[ In Reply To ..]
The employers do have the right to not only choose the environment they want, but the people they want to surround themselves with.

You just have to find an employer who likes to spew obscenities as much as you do and everyone will be comfortable.

You betcha employers have the right - Old Pro

[ In Reply To ..]
to choose their environment. I have actually helped half a dozen or so people from this board get MT jobs. None of these people have been crass or vulgar. I am sure that there are crass and vulgar companies out there and I am sure that people with no class would be much happier working for them. As my mama used to say, "There's somebody for everybody." :)- But my question is, why align yourself with the lowest common denominator?

This is the dumbest question... - wheres_my_job

[ In Reply To ..]
I NEVER EVER use vulgarity or sarcasm in an interaction with supervisor, interviewer, anything professional like that AT ALL. And I can be extremely sarcastic (don't know about vulgar, that's more subjective isn't it?)

It seems ridiculous to assume because a certain level of self-expression is taking place on a MESSAGE BOARD, they choose to communicate in the same manner in a professional interaction. Really strange assumption ???

You might be surprised - see polite message

I used to have to interview applicants who sent their applications and resumes by e-mail. Even their e-mail addresses were tasteless. There is no way I would have considered some of them, just because of the way they presented themselves on e-mail. If they represent themselves at that low level when they are applying for a job, what are they going to be like once they are hired? No thanks. I would rather work with people who present themselves professionally. I would rather be around pleasant people who can speak intelligently, with real words.

but I might cut them some slack - wheres_my_job

[ In Reply To ..]
people do learn and grow - I might see how they handled themselves in an interview, despite their "tasteless" email addresses. Power to the people!
No, because there were plenty of skilled applicants who presented themselves appropriately - Tasteless = Powerless
[ In Reply To ..]
I don't have time to waste while they learn and grow when I have others who want that job and are already mature.

Curious About How Many Doctors Online Transcriptionists Do Work For Regularly
Aug 25, 2012

Hi everyone. I'm kinda new on this board. I have a question. I'm wondering how many docs you generally get working for online companies. Do you get new docs all the time? Or do you generally work for the same docs on a regular basis? I work for a hospital, and I've been asking MTs where I work, and it's coming up that most of them seem to get the same docs all the time. I've only been there a year and a half, and up until a couple months ago, I was getting a lot of the s ...
