Need Advice on Job Offer - Forthegirls

I'm considering an offer from a national company of around 8.75 cents straight typing and around 5.5 for VR. This would be for a full-time position and I have over 10 years experience (but none with VR). I'm currently on unemployment earning around $1500 a month. My normal production of straight typing is around 150-200 lph. With this info., should it be a problem to earn more than what I'm currently making on unemployment? I'm afraid to make the change as once I accept this position, I will no longer qualify for the same amount of $ I'm making on unemployment. My husband is not working also, so this is a really difficult decision for me, because we need this money. Any advice is appreciated.

That is 6000 lines x 8.75 = $525/week x 4 = $2100. If you're an IC you have to figure 30% of that is for taxes. If employee not sure what percentage is.

There are a lot of factors that will change that number. If you have good accounts where you don't have trouble making your lines, if there is enough work so you can make your lines, how much is typing and how much VR.

I think if you are on a good VR platform (such as Escription) you can probably make good money...for example, if you are doing about 300 lph that would be about $2640 a month. It also depends on the type of work that you are good at. For me clinic notes are a breeze and I can easily average over 300 lph but operative reports are fairly new to me and I'm averaging about 250 an hour. Lots of factors there though for each person but all in all it would seem to me that you would be making more money working than you are on unemployment.

More details? That 300 lph that is your goal, if you don't make that in 7 hours (1 hour for breaks making it an 8-hour day), how many hours are you working? That's what I am curious about. People say they make a good wage, but how many hours a day are you working to achieve that? If you don't mind my question. Thanks.

I'm using ExText/Dictaphone and doing chart notes easily did over 300 lph..sometimes high 300s if it was a good night. I no longer do clinic notes...but do more operative reports which is usually between $14 and $19 an hour which is mid to high 200s. I work PT and at this point am lucky to get 20 hrs a week due to outsourcing (due to the days that I work it's very hard to make that 20 hrs). For me a 6 hour day should average to about 1500 to 1800 lines. Hope that helped!

The difference between 1500 and 1800 is quite a difference, even guessing at your cpl. Sounded good, but then you mentioned difference between clinic notes and op notes, and being part time and outsourcing, so not that great???

during the week it would be possible. I say between 1500 and 1800 because there are days where you have perfect dictators and you can get lots of work done but there are other days where it seems you get lots of ESLs or just horrible dictators...it just depends. I need the income from the MT job I just don't depend on it. I work a FT day job which I was hoping to be able to leave and do MT full time but it would be stupid of me to do so with how the MT field is so I work both. I could make more doing MT if I needed to but most weeks I'm so dang tired that I'm happy just to reach a certain $ amount.

Gotcha. Used to be a good profession you could do full time (really just 40 hours or less) and count on. Now I am in school and just waiting to be able to leave MT.... It has become intolerable, but the end is in sight. It's not a bad part-time job, though, as things go nowadays. Thanks.

Editscript is a good platform. But, what makes for a good job opportunity, IMHO, is the kind of dictators on the account and the volume of work available. So far, I've not found a job where I've had good dictators and plenty of work on a long-term basis. If it were me, I would hang onto the unemployment for as long as possible. Of course, whenever you start a new job, it will take a while to learn the account and build up your speed. You don't want to be totally broke when you start a new job, so timing is also important.

I am very grateful to have your advice on this. I am negotiating my rate and will consider if they meet my request. I am very leery of the learning curve and my $ going down, but I do feel it will be worth it in the end. Ugh. This economy really stinks right now !

I don't believe you mentioned whether the offer is for employment or IC status. Does this new company offer medical coverage and, if so, that would be a biggie to consider being that you and your husband are both without a job.

No company is going to tell you up front that their dictators are incomprehensible and that their transcriptions are forced to break up their day into four 2-hour shifts covering a 24-hour span. Reading the boards, even within a company there are differences; some swear they're being begged to put in overtime every week and others at the same MTSO weave a tale of twiddling their thumbs before 20 MTs pounce on a single job.

If I were to be on unemployment, it would almost take a personal relationship with the boss or a written guarantee to make me willing to give up the UI. That being said, though, there are a few MTSOs that never seem to merit a mention on this board, good or bad, which makes me think they must be doing something right, so maybe for them I would take the leap.

Wow. I was just offered a job by MQ. I politely asked if the 'rumors' were true about being docked for sending reports to QA. I was informed that if you are supposed to do 6,000 lines a week and 300 lines total come to QA, then yes you would be docked 3 cents per line. I am an MT with 20+ years experience and switched careers a year ago when our hospital's Transcription Department was eliminated and all transcription was outsourced. I lost my job a few months ago. I started applying, testing, waiting to hear from companies. I did get hired this week part-time for VRE work and it pays peanuts. I got a job offer at Probity. The pay has an incentive built in for anything over 5000 lines per pay period. Does anyone know what the pay period is?
