My hospital outsourced our department today. - Horski

I'm pretty bitter!

Oh No! I am so sorry. - Happened to me a while ago, too.

I still never fully bounced back from that. It was a shock. I never dreamed my hospital would do that to us. But they did. And we were not guaranteed jobs with the MTSO -- we had to "apply" and "test" and then negotiate a pay with the MTSO if they decided to hire us.

I have finally decided to move on from this career. I have had enough. It has turned into something I don't even recognize as my old job.

Did they go with a national MTSO? Were you offered jobs, too? I hope all works out for you. Hang in there.

I feel bad, I know how you feel, honestly, I do.

They did negoteate that they had to hire all of us for at least 90 days. I took it as it is an hourly wage and they pay my cobra. Either I will like them or it will give me time to reevaluate. What do you do now?

That was part of what happened to me two years ago; then my pt work with a psychiatrist went voice recognition. I am out of it now completely and am now a Regional Marketing Manager and am loving it. I am my own boss and work when I want to; love the flexibility and social life again.

It just doesn't seem to matter anymore that companies have loyal and very skilled MTs, or any other company for that matter. I have lost jobs to offshoring and VR, which turned my world upside down. You would think that doing double the required transcription with 98% to 100% on audits would be job security. What happened to the day when our parents went to work for a company and stayed 20-40 years and retired there? And you know what else makes me bitter is that the good MTs who are being treated like dirt are the very ones who made the companies what they are!! I hope they all go under and there will be MT work for us directly from the clients. Dream on, right?

I hate this has happened to so many! - Horski

Thanks so much for the compassion!!

Im sorry! - Shan

I'm sorry to hear that! I would be spitting nails right about now!!! Its one thing to lose your job because they no longer need you or whatever, but to outsource it is just dead wrong!! Like a slap in the face for all the hard work you've put into it!

Keep your head up and keep looking!!!

Thank you so much! - Horski

Thanks for much for the compassion and encouragement!

That is where the end of my position started a number of years ago! They gave a lot of the work as they can use them and save paying benefits to us; then comes voice recognition! So our department was cut in half and only the most difficult doctors to transcribe for are left- ugh! Glad I am out of there. Went to a completely different program instead and liking it a lot.

Thank you! - Horski

What program did you switch to? I am taking a job with the company they outsourced with, but doesn't mean I will like it or they will like me.

I feel your pain. - Daylo

Mine did this to me and 30 other contractors year before last. It has been hard. After seven years of working for this hospital, they went with a company that only required 2 years of experience to hire. I have over 20.

I wonder? - Horski

I took a job with the company that took our jobs, but I am sure they could just be using us to learn the account and then we are out of there. I'm going to keep looking.

My Hospital Outsourced To M*Modal.
May 05, 2015

So I've been a transcriptionist for 15 years, the last 8 years I've been self-employed, contracted to a local hospital (recently bought out by a bigger hospital), and several family practices and nursing homes.  The hospital decided to oursource transcription to M*Modal, with each of us getting an "offer" from M*Modal (thus preventing the employed transcriptionists from being able to draw unemployment, nice).  I accepted the offer while still looking into other jobs locally, ...

Hospital Medical Records Department
Nov 14, 2009

With HIPAA regulations tightening on who can get a carbon copy of a patient's medical record, MTs should NOT have the responsibility of sending any carbon copies at all.  All carbon copy requests for a patient's records should go directly to the hospital's medical records dept for a signed release verification from the patient for that copy to be sent.  Reports being sent from any outside provider without the proper signed release from the patient should be consider ...

Is there anybody here who worked for a hospital in the transcrption department only to have their jobs yanked out from under t hem and sent to a National such as Nuance?  I know somebody who works for a local hospital and it looks like they secretly are in the process of making this move....some very strange secretive things going on that makes me wonder...... We Just Found Out Our Hospital Jobs Have Been Outsourced To Nuance.... Sm
Feb 20, 2015

We just found out our hospital jobs are being outsourced to Nuance.  I am really worried.  From the webinar we attended, Nuance said all the right things and it didn't sound too bad, but it sure doesn't mesh with what I'm reading here.  We have to make a decision about whether to go with them or not by next week, and I don't feel like I have all the answers I need yet.  I feel like I'm being pressured.    I want to ask them questions b ...

How The Hospital Department Covers Weekend Shifts/hours
Jan 24, 2014

I am curious if anyone is an at-home transcriptionist who works for a hospital and how the department covers weekend shifts/hours. Also curious what kind of hours you are required to work during the week and how many people are on the transcription team.  Or if you'd just share what your company does for scheduling and what the hours are.  I am looking for some ideas for our team.   Small hospital.  Weekend coverage only includes priority jobs (H&Ps). Thanks! ...

There Goes Another MT Department. S/m
Nov 24, 2013

I have a sister who is the head of med rec in a hospital in Iowa. This hospital is part of a large system. They are moving to VR within the next year. Those MTs are worried about their jobs. I told my sister to give them a heads up - their $20+/hour jobs will be gone. Their superb benefits will be gone. I feel for them - this is happening to all of us - being paid peanuts for our experience and knowledge. They already have EMR in place and there are patients who, once they've log ...

Department Capitalization
Aug 23, 2012

I have been going back and forth on this, but doc says, "He was also found to be hypertensive. Patient's hypertension was managed by *anesthesia* and a 12-lead EKG was obtained." My gut is wanting to capitalize anesthesia to show that it was the anesthesiologists in the Anesthesia Department who managed the hypertension rather than anesthesia itself, but then again, maybe not? Would it be safer to not capitalize it? ...

Outsourced Again
Dec 28, 2011

The hospital where I worked decided to outsource us. They did it in the worst way possible, they call us in for a meeting but it is not on the usual date of our dept meetings. The CFO, HR, and the new transcription company are at the head of the table. The CFO says, "the hospital has decided to award our transcription to ______ (starts with a W)." That's all he said! No gratitude (some have worked there for 40, 24, 11, 8 years), no severance package. By state or federal law, when they l ...

To Capitalize Or Not...department Names
May 24, 2010

When do you capitalize departments?  I have been in the biz for 10 years, and my current QA staff is giving me conflicting feedback on my capitalization.  One QA manager is giving me errors for not capitalizing, the other is giving me errors when I do!  I was always taught that you didn't capitalize the department unless it was preceded by the proper name of the hospital (XYZ Hospital Emergency Department, etc). Also, as far as specialties, how do you handle those?  For ...

Capitalization - Department Is Used As An Entity
Aug 30, 2011

I have always been under the impression that when a department is used as an entity, such as "The patient was seen by the Pulmonary Department," that it would be capitalized.  If it were "The patient was seen in the pulmonary department," it would not be capitalized.  This is to denote that in the first example, the patient was actually seen by a person, not by the department itself (a thing).  I think this is an important distinction for clarity.  The account I am on is saying that pulmo ...

Being Outsourced To M-Modal
Jul 10, 2012

I have a few questions for anyone who is in fact an employee of M-Modal.  My current employer just informed us that we were being outsourced to M-Modal.  We, being 12-13 MTs, are really freaking out.  We are hearing all of these "not so good" reviews and really we do not know who or what to believe.  Management says we will be offered jobs individually with M-Modal, as they really want to keep the current MTs on the region and doing this hospital's transcription, but from what I gathe ...

More Fields Being Outsourced - S/m
Jul 26, 2012

I was reading the Tampa Tribune last night.  There was an article regarding outsourcing.  It talked about x-rays and scans being sent to India and the Phillipines (which we all know happens), but the article said now insurance companies, instead of having nurses on staff to assist patients pre and post-op, as well as answering medical questions, will be using "overseas people" in, again, India and the Phillipines.  Why you ask?  Because they work for peanuts.  Personall ...

Signs Job Outsourced
Aug 11, 2013

I have read the conversations here with such deep compassion for the fear and hopelessness most are experiencing in this transition from proud profession to extinction.  From my cocoon of full benefit hospital system position, I still deeply empathized with my fellow MTs in distress.  I have the sense that I will soon join your ranks and would like to ask what are the signs that your hospital/service is preparing to "save money" by throwing their dedicated employees into the giant cess ...
