Capitalization - department is used as an entity - LK

I have always been under the impression that when a department is used as an entity, such as "The patient was seen by the Pulmonary Department," that it would be capitalized. If it were "The patient was seen in the pulmonary department," it would not be capitalized. This is to denote that in the first example, the patient was actually seen by a person, not by the department itself (a thing). I think this is an important distinction for clarity. The account I am on is saying that pulmonary department in the first example should not be capitalized. Is there anything in the BOS on this? I can't find it. My account is very particular about following BOS to the T. Obviously, if they don't want it done that way, it's fine with me. I just don't want them coming back later and telling me it should have been capitalized per BOS.

Basically, capitalize if department is part of an organization, like the "State Department in Washington."
But more often than not, "do not capitalize common organizational terms such as 'department, division, or committee' when they are expressed as general reference.
I found this info in my BOS under the index for "department"...hope this helps a little. :)

I find the way the BOS is set up to be extremely hard to navigate and find anything!
