Medical transcription school - reputable and not a rip-off? - KYMT
Posted: Feb 18, 2013
Can anyone tell me which MT schools are reputable and not a rip-off? I'm asking for a friend who is interested in getting into the field. I started so many years ago that I've never had to get certified, so would appreciate any info. Thanks!

waste money on trying to get into MT field.
I agree, she must not be a very good friend to you for sure! - MT3

It really doesn't matter what school she attends, new MTs have a VERY difficult time finding employment. They want MTs with at least five years of EXPERIENCE, not school. Then, you have the MTs with 20 years of experience that are also competing for the same job in this dying industry. I wouldn't try to turn anyone in the direction of becoming an MT these days.
Agree, why enter a totally dieing field - sm

please dont fall victim to the garbage you see about the great wages, etc. This job now makes you a slave to your computer, you have no life, no set schedule cause there is never any work, and it sucks the life out of you..Years ago, it was great, but seriously now it rots and has steadily been getting worse, been doing it for 15 yrs..And by the way I am self taught, didnt waste a dime on the school..I believe when I looked 15 yrs ago, the school was 6500 dollars? Curious what it is now, but I would spend my money better and find a growing field for your future...Just my opinion
And I might add - sm

self taught I was making up to 10 cents a line but have taken steady industry-wide paycuts over the years, and with different companies, down to 8.25 a line..I have never had a job where the better I got at it, the less money I got. All truth, just want you to make an informed decision
The entire field of medical transcription is a rip-off. - no/msg

You said that you started so many years ago that you never had to get certified. I didn't think certification was mandatory for anyone no matter when they got into the field. I did get certified, but it was my understanding that it was completely optional.
I expect she's under - the

mistaken impression that receiving a certificate from an MT school is the equivalent of being a CMT. Many people do not understand the difference, and many newbies call themselves CMTs because they think their matchbook-cover school certificate means they're "certified" and it's the same thing as being a CMT.
I know the difference btwn CMT and MT - sm

Most companies wont hire and MT without a "school certificate" the only way I managed was I went to a local place, he said nope we only hire with, I think it was 5 yrs experience at the time..I said let me prove myself, he let me test and hired me on the spot..self taught..I could pass the CMT course now, but why bother, there is no benefit at all anymore

Medical Transcription School Has Left Me A Little Unnerved Feb 14, 2010I recently had an experience with an MT school that has left me a little unnerved. Therefore, I have a couple of questions for those who are currently attending school or have completed an MT program. Were you provided statistics about the number of actual graduates? Schools can have a lot of enrollees but it’s my opinion that the number of actual graduates matters. Were you provided any information about the qualifications of your instructors? My next question is for the experienced M ...

Going Back To School And Getting Certified As A Medical Assistant Mar 24, 2014I have been in the field of Education for 23 yrs and have been an Administrator for the past 13. Due to the economy, schools would rather hire those with no experience and pay them less than seasoned veterans like myself. I have 2 in college and a 10yr old I adopted at birth so I am far from retirement. I am considering going back to school and getting certified as a Medical Assistant (which would include Phlebotomy and X-ray tech) and Medical Billing/Coding or Transcription. I am currently un ...

Old School Transcription Oct 05, 2011I belong to the now dying breed of transcriptionists that still get paid by the hour and work for a great group of docs from home, as an employee.
