Medical transcription school has left me a little unnerved - Just Wondering

Posted: Feb 14, 2010

I recently had an experience with an MT school that has left me a little unnerved.  Therefore, I have a couple of questions for those who are currently attending school or have completed an MT program.  Were you provided statistics about the number of actual graduates?  Schools can have a lot of enrollees but it’s my opinion that the number of actual graduates matters. Were you provided any information about the qualifications of your instructors?  My next question is for the experienced MTs.  Given your experience, what do you think is the likelihood of someone finding a work at home job if they only complete a beginning MT course?  I have been reading posts on the board for a while, and one thing I’ve come to realize is that most posters are very direct with their answers. That’s what I’m looking for.

as an MT - getting a job

Many MTs that have 30 years experience are having problems getting a job these days. It is very, very hard to get that first job even with a lot of education, a lot of experience. If this is your only means of making a living, I would definitely go somewhere else, as even me with over 35 years, and about to retire in the next 10, I do not believe I will have a job until I am old enough to retire and I will have to come up with something else before that time. This is a profession that has been dying a slow painful death for awhile and now getting worse and more painful all the time. Just brutall honest.

Getting a job - Old MTSO

I agree completely. I have 16 months to go until I can collect retirement and am praying that there will be enough work to carry me through. I would never, EVER recommend that a young person commence a career in MT. Sorry, friends, that train has come and gone.

Nobody is going to want to hire someone who's only had a beginning MT course. - deb

Even the schools with the best records are having trouble placing their grads lately. The companies that will let you take their employment test will usually require you to pass with a 98% (or at least 95% or higher) and with only a "beginning" course you most likely will not be able to pass.

Is a Beginning MT course enough? NO! Not enough. - That will not be enough.

Employers in any industry right now are able to pick the best of a stack of applicants. If you just have a beginning course, you aren't even a starter.

Is beginning course enouth? - Just passing through

Probably not enough to pass an employment test, but you sure can take these tests, as many as possible, to see what more you need to know. Many companies have a test along with the application process online. That is the only way you can answer the question of whether or not you have enough training.

Same happened to me but I got help - ncgirl

I went to TRSI and had a terrible experience of not learning anything because of lack of teachers answering any questions, etc. and could not find a job but I then went to Med-Line who had a better program and even other options for other shorter programs and then put me in a job as an intern to learn and get experience, then helped me find a job. And I feel I learned a lot more because they do not grade with a computer and forget about you.

Going Back To School And Getting Certified As A Medical Assistant
Mar 24, 2014

I have been in the field of Education for 23 yrs and have been an Administrator for the past 13. Due to the economy,  schools would rather hire those with no experience and pay them less than seasoned veterans like myself. I have 2 in college and a 10yr old I adopted at birth so I am far from retirement. I am considering going back to school and getting certified as a Medical Assistant (which would include Phlebotomy and X-ray tech) and Medical Billing/Coding or Transcription. I am currently un ...

Old School Transcription
Oct 05, 2011

I belong to the now dying breed of transcriptionists that still get paid by the hour and work for a great group of docs from home, as an employee. Now, voice recognition is threatening everything I know. I have worked in transcription for 32 years, started in pathology right out of high school! I wanted to let everyone know that I really, really appreciate all the input and conversation you have on this forum. It is a God send to a dinosaur like me. I was offered a job with MedQuist just ...

Medical Transcription At Home To Become A Medical Scribe?
Jan 20, 2015

Has anybody left medical transcription at home to become a medical scribe?  I have an opportunity to do so but there aren't any scribes currently in my area and I don't know anyone who has worked as a scribe before.  The scribe position starting pay is almost double what I make as an MT per hour so it is very tempting, I just don't know much about it. ...

Left At Home Transcription....
Jul 02, 2011

I have been doing transcription for about 15 years now. After leaving MedQuist due to their bad management, I have been hopping around for several years not able to find the right match for me. Everything that sounds great at the beginning turns out to be the opposite. Either the pay is cut in half for their horrible speech recognition or it pays well and the program that they use just isn't very productive. I realized I had no choice but go back into the hospitals when my last position ...
