Just had a baby and trying to get back to working...impossible! - NewMama

Posted: Dec 23, 2009

I just had a baby 6 weeks ago and I am trying to start back working which I am finding impossible.  I posted about this before I had my baby and a lot of you said that it was possible to work with a newborn......How!?  I am so stressed out because I need to start back working because we need the money but everytime I try to she starts crying or needs something.  For those of you who have experience with this, how did you work with a newborn in the house?  Please any tips and advice is appreciated.

Your workday will be broken up... - you may consider childcare

You will have to bite the bullet and find an IC job with some flexibility and learn to go back and forth between newborn and work. You will not be able to sit and work for any extended period. Newborns usually sleep a lot. Is your newborn not sleeping at all?

It can be done but you have to work around the baby.

I would put the baby either in a sling or a "boppy" pillow - babiesbabies

around me and he/she slept and was close to me all the time while I typed. Sometimes they just really need to be next to mom and "feel" her so to speak. I also got a vibrating baby chair/sleeper and put that next to my foot pedal and desk. I even nursed while typing while baby was laying on the boppy pillow. It is definitely the extreme of multi-tasking but if you want to go back to work, you will get used to baby than work, baby than work, up and down all the time like the other person said, working around your baby. This is an exicting time for you though. Enjoy it and you can work, just with some flexibility and patience I think!

periods of time--she would have stayed all day if I had let her. She loved it. I put her right beside me and she was fine. I also had a pillow that I could put in my lap and typed with her lying on the pillow on her stomach.

Congrats on the new little one. You need to calm down because the stress you are under can transfer to your baby. I don't know how, but they can feel it.

I have found, IN MY JOB, that it would be next to impossible to care for a baby or small child because I have a set number of lines as my goal and I have a particular shift commitment to my company.

That being said, if you have a job with a flexible schedule (IC), you will simply have to work when your baby is sleeping or your hubby can take care of the infant when he is home from work. This is tough. You are going to feel like you are either taking care of the baby or working constantly and there is nothing in between. It may eventually get easier until the child starts crawling. Then you will have to work at nap times or when hubby is available to relieve you. This is not impossible but certainly not as easy as some make it sound.

If you have a set schedule that you must work, you are going to have to obtain some outside help with baby-sitting. Employers do not accept children as an excuse for not transcribing what they expect each day. Good luck to you. I hope it works out.

I have a 1-year-old now and went back to work after 6 weeks. I have read about MTs going back after a day or 2, and while that is great for them, I don't think I could have done that. I enjoyed my time off.

Are you working full time? That would have been hard if not next to impossible for me. Hopefully you have a flexible schedule. You will find though once you get a routine that works, the baby will change their routine, and you have to figure it out again. The easiest thing for me was to stay up after her early feeding at 5:00 and try to get in a few hours before she woke up again. Then take a break when she woke up and get in the rest of my hours during naptime. I also used bouncy chair, but she did not seem to want to sit for long. A swing is better.

It will be a hard few months, and I can't say it has gotten much better yet, but it was worth it for me not to have to put baby in childcare.

Good luck.

First off, congratulations! I actually did not begin MT work until my kids were in elementary school. So, I have no real experience with this. But, knowing the demands I had with my own children as newborns, I can sympathize and at that time I was not working. Some people may be able to pull off doing work at home with a baby and some may not - remember that all children/babies are different. Some babies are fussier than others. some sleep longer than others do, etc. I am assuming this is your first child? I don't know how much money you are accustomed to making but day care can be expensive. Plus, many kids who go to day care get sick a lot and then you have doctor's bills, etc. I don't know, that is something you and your husband would have to decide if it was worth it or not. Do you have any relatives who could help out? Grandparents nearby who might be willing to help? If not, maybe working at night would be a valid suggestion. You could nap during the daytime when the baby sleeps and then maybe your husband could help out some at night when he is at home. Just some ideas. I wish you luck!

I did it and found it lots easier then than now! sm - RoadRunnerMT

I held my babies and typed at the same time, even nursed. Took some adjusting and getting used to but was flying in no time. Sometimes even one letter pecking but every character adds up eventually. Swing was also wonderful. Get you a Maya wrap and you can work and take care of baby. It doesn't get easier as they crawl/walk, only harder.

Working With A New Baby At Home....
Mar 15, 2011

Hi all :)   I wondered if I might be able to get some advice from those of you who have worked from home with a new baby.  My baby was born in February and I'm due to start back to work soon.  I have an older boy, but I worked outside the home with him.  My baby is breast fed, which makes me wonder about how you handled frequent feedings.  Also, I wanted to know what you used if you needed to keep typing but be able to hold the baby as well.  I thought I would ...

IMPOSSIBLE To Make A Living Working At Nuance.
Aug 11, 2014

This is beyond insane. Why hire all these new people and pay for training and benefits only to have EVERYONE run out of work? It makes no business sense whatsoever. The person making these decisions must have received their MBA from a Cracker Jack's box. It's bad enough that we're being paid peanuts (pun intended), but to run out of work, too? Come on, people. Develop some sense and sensitivity. Thank you. ...

I took the entire weekend in silence and did a lot of thinking, and made some decisions.  One thing that I know for sure about myself is that this bankruptcy issue is the END for me.  I've felt the end was coming, with the 99.6% requirement, and then even more so with the 99.7% requirement, but working for a company who requires more of ME than it does of ITSELF is a complete deal-breaker.  I won't work for a company that doesn't pay its bills - because that puts u ...

Reversals On Post Audits Are Virtually Impossible?
Aug 08, 2012

So from new info I just got, post audit scores are virtually impossible to reverse.  So apparently the people in that deptartment, QA or QC - whicever it is, must be Goddesses as that would imply they never make mistakes.  Our bonuses hinge entirely on these particular audits and they are WRITTEN IN STONE.  I find this kind of outrageous.   There is no human being who is perfect, so I have to assume that Nuance has hired this crew from Mt Olympus (I suppose they m ...

Back To Work After Back Surgery

Hello, I would like to transcribe from home again. However, I HAVE to get up and walk for a few minutes at least once an hour. You see, I had to have 2 back surgeries in the last 18 months. I've been a transcriptionist for many years and this is my profession. Does anyone have a suggestion what to tell these companies that will hire you to work from home when you have to get up so much?
