When Baby Boomers finally hang it up - MTfeduptohere

Posted: Nov 25, 2012

What will all the big MTSOs do then?  There are classes in my town for MT training and all have been suspended or eliminated due to lack of interest.  No surprise there!  I hit 60 in 2 more months and like some who posted below, I was going to keep working for years, even part time while getting my SS.  With yet another "take over" by a huge MTSO (Nuance), I am just hanging on until I hit 62 or so, and then hanging this sorrowful profession up in the closet, where it surely has gone over the last decade.  When all there are to choose from is newbies who have very poor training and no experience, or the lack of any MTs at all, then let the managers roll up their sleeves and type, because that is all there will be left to these companies.  I have been through 3 mergers in 3 years.  There is no place left to go these days.  It won't be long that the only 2 MT companies left will be M-Modal and Nuance and they will be running ads nonstop to try and convince MTs to work for them.  Not me.

I am sure EMR or voice recog will fill most gaps - if not already, and all will balance out. n/m

VR still has to be edited, and guess by whom? Yep, experienced MTs. As for EMR, there are still EMT templates that have to be filled in where the "normal stuff" just cannot be inserted, such as abnormal exams, assessments and treatment plan. Who will be doing that? You may say the doctors will be, but already many are complaining about both VR and having to do their own transcription instead of seeing patients. No, VR and EMR will not even come close to filling in the gaps. I agree with the OP here. Once the seasoned, experienced gals retire or seek a better way to make some money, the MT industry is going to fall off the cliff, and all of the suits will be going along for the ride!

yep...that is what the "scribes" will be doing... - anon

for a whopping 8-9.00 an hour!
So true...the battle against middle class rages on - wheres_my_job

it's absurd and destructive, and yet it continues.
Exactly! I just saw an ad for a scribe. - It pays 8.00 an hour (sm)
[ In Reply To ..]
for the first 3 months. After you have proved you can do it (all shifts), they increase the pay to 10.00. Fixed pay. They are selling it as if it can get you into medical school because it is in an ER. What a joke! You apparently get to follow the doctor around and do all of his/her "non-medical" tasks, i.e., EMR. Get it? It's a low-paying job to give you a "boost" to get you into medical school! It's not meant to be a long-term career; it's a stepping stone. I agree with your post!
And from what I can see the scribes have - me
[ In Reply To ..]
little medical terminology and can't even spell the in-hospital physician names. My account has just started using scribes in the ER and I find lots of errors in them. Today in a report drug was said several times as Betaseron and transcribed as beta serum each time. For $8/hour they are getting what they're paying for.

Scribes - started as

pre-med and nursing students to give them a close up and personal experience of medicine. When I was in nursing school the lack of knowledge of medical terminology was frightening. I now see that medical assistants are doing some scribing as well. I guess hospitals and doctors have the idea to cram whatever they can into one job description, and all for a 16-week certificate course. The sad thing is that these medical assistants think they are "medical professionals," but the docs and hospitals don't have to pay RN salaries or MT salaries (former).
16 week course??? - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
are you speaking of a medical assistant course being only 16 weeks?? where did you get this info from? I took a ma course many years ago and it was a 2-year intensive course of anatomy and physiology, psychology, lab studies, CPR and lifesaving studies, drawing blood, transcription studies, 2 semesters of medical terminology, English and grammar studies. MAs are allowed to do more than LPNs once certified. Unless something has drastically changed or you are mistaking this for a CNA course, you are woefully incorrect about this. However, for all the knowledge that MAs are expected to know, their salaries too are well below the standards their education provided!

off the cliff - we can only hope, nm

Hang On!
Mar 06, 2010

I've worked for MQ for over 15 years.  I've seen lots of ups and downs...  bad days, despairing days, and good days too...   My advice to everyone upset by recent changes, first time right, etc.:  Calm down and hang on!  Wait and see how this actually works out.   If you are having problems filling blanks, then start guessing to get you through this period.  We all know that the vast majority of problems with medical reports are caused by the dicta ...

We Can All Hang It Up Anyway
Aug 21, 2011

Yesterday I heard some people actually talking about they had meetings with some people from a new softwear company that in a few years will allow them to dictate and post their medical records online themselves at the same time cutting out the middle men, companies with big fees and poor work and medical transcriptionist, and if they are too busy they think their secretary or LPNs or Medical Assistants will be able to do it all for them.  HA!  I actually heard this! CRAZY.  ...

Gah! Hang Up When You're Done Dictating!!!
Oct 01, 2010

He does this all the time...turns a 1.5-2 min dictation into a 15 minute dictation.  I fast forward through it, but I still have to "listen" to the whole file before I can turn in the dictation.  This is on top of being a horrible dictator; he whispers, shuffles papers, etc, and has extremely long pauses between words.  Gah!!!! Okay, just had to get that out of my system.  Thanks! ...

How Hard Is It To Hang Up A Phone, Really?
Oct 05, 2010

My ears get so tired of all the banging the doctors do just trying to hang up the dang phone!  I also get tired with all the time I waste having to listen to how nurse Betty's weekend was because the doctor just laid the phone down for 20 minutes instead of hanging up!   ...

Hang MT As A Dying Profession. I'm Going To Be MA.
Oct 30, 2012

At least MA skills can be used for other things and can be a stepping stone to other careers, and you can get a da** job almost anywhere. Sick of being sold down the river by hospitals whose administration doesn't have the stones to tell you they're getting rid of you, but throw out vague hints now and expect you to catch on, so 2 years later they can say "well we told you to look into further education..." My hospital can kiss my posterior. I'm a very darn good MT and th ...

May 28, 2013

Been doing this 30 years and this is a new one on me - dr going very fast, and no matter how I slow him down, it still s/l he is saying - ".....with the hip turned in internal rotation, a baby killer was placed into the neck with a Cobra placed medially....."   I cannot document any type of instrument that s/l this on Google anywhere.  Lots of stuff comes up, but nothing legitimate.  Is this a nickname for something?  Is this really what he is saying? ...

Working With A New Baby At Home....
Mar 15, 2011

Hi all :)   I wondered if I might be able to get some advice from those of you who have worked from home with a new baby.  My baby was born in February and I'm due to start back to work soon.  I have an older boy, but I worked outside the home with him.  My baby is breast fed, which makes me wonder about how you handled frequent feedings.  Also, I wanted to know what you used if you needed to keep typing but be able to hold the baby as well.  I thought I would ...

Just Had A Baby And Trying To Get Back To Working...impossible!

I just had a baby 6 weeks ago and I am trying to start back working which I am finding impossible.  I posted about this before I had my baby and a lot of you said that it was possible to work with a newborn......How!?  I am so stressed out because I need to start back working because we need the money but everytime I try to she starts crying or needs something.  For those of you who have experience with this, how did you work with a newborn in the house?  Please any tips and ...

Baby Was Delivered By National Delivery.
Sep 24, 2010

Guess they took over for the stork?  My ASR has also taken a holiday from all small words today:  is, was, the, and, then, etc.  I guess it has been threatened to be more productive also.  Just skip half the words and voila -- twice the production.  That gets really tedious hour after hour.  Disclaimer:  I am happy to have a job.  Do not wish to find another one.  Too old for career change.  Thank you. ...

I Finally Get It....
Mar 02, 2010

After receiving the infamous "no jobs available" for the upteen time today, it finally hit me.  What an amazing way to get rid of MTs without really having to get rid of them on your own.  Drive the MTs insane with no work, yet keep them locked to their computers in the hope that a job might become available.  It feels kinda like playing the lottery....you know it's a waste of money and time, but just maybe you might win...ughh.  Why is it that our "professional" jo ...

Now I Finally Believe The End Is Near
Jun 06, 2011

I must admit I've been reading this board for years, never posted until now, partly due to the probably unsubstantiated paranoia going around awhile back that those who posted here got the ax first, silly I suppose, but I used to care about keeping this job and didn't want to take any chances.  Now, finally, I understand that I am fighting a losing battle, and I know longer give ******.  I've been reading about you guys with NJA for days on end, etc., etc., and I guess I ...

I Did It.....finally! Sm
Jul 05, 2011

I finally told MQ goodbye!  I finally got another contract job and they needed me to start pretty much immediately, so I quit without notice.  In a way I feel bad for resigning without a 2-week notice, but I figure MQ would not give me a 2-week notice if they were letting me go.  I wish all my MQ co-workers well and I hope you find happiness either with MQ or elsewhere.  God bless you all! ...

Never thought this day would get here, but I'm finally gone!! I feel such peace just to know that I won't have to stress anymore about everthing this industry has become: Horrible dictators, low pay, off-shoring, and VR. Bless everyone who is sticking it out until the very end. ...

I can't tell you how happy I am.  I was literally dancing around the house.  DS thought I was out of my mind, and I kind of was.  I have been trying to get out from under this oppressive company for a long time now, and I finally have.  I wish everyone a happy holiday.  I'm happy to say I won't be posting here anymore.  I've moved on and I'm not looking back. Well I Finally Did It!
Jan 23, 2013

I finally went ahead and filed for partial U/E.  I know I'm not in as bad of a situation as many I read on this board but I just can't live like this anymore.  It's bad enough that our pay has been to sharply cut with VR but now when they don't give us any work to do it's worse.  It humiliated me at my age to have to do this for the first time in my life at 59 years of age but I did it.  ...

Finally Got Out Of MT
Jan 01, 2014

I just wanted really to say for those of you still hanging on, worried about work in the outside world, I finally got out about 3 months ago and I haven't been this happy in YEARS and to be exact in the last 12 years that I was an MT.  Working as an MT, I don't think I ever felt good enough, because I would be torn apart due to missing a comma or not being able to understand a term well enough to find it.  I was so stressed about money all of the time and even dreaded holiday ...
